LAN Communications

Given a scenario of having an iPad on the same LAN as the cameras, is communication between the app and the cameras local for 1) Live Streaming and/or 2) microSD access/viewing?

Yes, it is, once communication has been established via the Wyze servers.

So if I unplug my Internet, I’ll be able access the cameras? I haven’t tested that, but I’m thinking some Internet handshaking must occur.

If your connection to the camera is already established and you are viewing the live stream then yes. But you won’t be able to switch cameras.

Thanks. It would be nice to have 100% LAN connections to the cameras from the app.

They are “cloud-based” cameras, so having to have an internet connection should be apparent. I’ve stopped trying to use them for any kind of security. I have LAN based cameras instead (Amcrest) along with a NVR. I now have the Wyze cameras as a convenience to check on my shop, garage and outside area around my house. I’ve never really used any of the alerts as they are too unreliable.

Understood. Thanks for the LAN vendors. I agree that these are just nice-to-have cameras and in reality, won’t amount to much.

Sprayed thread with heart-petals, but that last line is a doozy, made me sad. :cam_v2: :cam_v3: :cam_pan_v2:

Probably pretty apparent at this point from the replies, but signaling and commands are sent through the wyze servers, and only the video stream itself goes direct. This assumes you don’t have anything on your LAN blocking that communication also (like in my case where the cams are on an isolated wifi network and have to stream via the Wyze servers to get to my phone).

If you want totally off the grid operation you’d have to pull the SD card and put it in a PC, or go with a higher end solution with NVR etc.
