I just received an email saying there was an update for the app for security updates. It’s not on the Play store. I’m wondering if this is bogus
Also received the same email. Current iOS app version is already 3.8.5 (11) which was updated on Nov. 3. via the App Store. The email - no-reply@hello.wyze.com is one of their emails.
I received the same thing. The sending address is a known Wyze e-mail address, the “Update” buttons are linked to a known Wyze subdomain, I’m not seeing anything concerning in the headers, and the body shows a domain that belongs to a known marketing firm that I believe they’ve been using for a while.
I appreciate the caution here, but I believe it’s safe.
Also received this email. I want to know what the security issue was that required such an unprecedented email. I’ve used the ecosystem for years and this message was a first of its kind– that I can remember. Recent releases just say bug fixes. Without more info, I can only assume it was a worrisome bug that has been crawling around for awhile.
I’m already on PR 3.8.6 (723). Not sure the email is useful. It just takes me to Google play. There is nothing new there.
At least it hasn’t screwed up anything. Yet.
Yeah, I have no idea how they’re targeting users for this. I wondered if at least part of it is because I still use a tablet with 32-bit Android that’s running the older v2.50x app because it won’t support v3x, as my other devices are running v3.8.5+. I also wonder if this is the beginning of a move to shut down older app support because of VerifiedView. I expect that to come at some point, but I don’t know anything about their timeline for that.
My android app is already up to date but coincidental my doorbell cam v2 is now offline. Wah, waaahhh.
Just a PSA for anyone who may be or have already received this email regarding “Updating” Wyze App. Looks very official but absolutely NOT the way it’s done, unless through Google Play itself. I know life gets in the way often, too often at times and we opted in/out for convenience but beware.
I received that email as well. It looks to be legitimate. The reason I say that, is because while it is possible that they could spoof the header information to make it look like an email comes from the company officially, it would be pointless of them to use redirect links that go through the official Wyze domain, and when I analyzed the links it looks like they are redirect tracking links that use their official domain. So I think it is just somebody who posted those instead of the actual Google Play link so that they can see how many people updated the app after reading the email. However, I am cautious like you and avoid clicking links like that in emails because spoofing is relatively easy.
Just in case, I forwarded a copy of the email to Wyze Cyber Security and asked them to confirm.
However, I do suspect that it is actually a real email. But I agree with you that they should have used the official links to the app stores instead of a redirect tracking link which can be suspicious and concerning. But the fact that the links were using their official domain almost guarantees that it is legitimate and okay.
But, as a general rule, everybody should avoid clicking on [unexpected and unsolicited] links in emails. If anybody hasn’t learned that yet, then a tough lesson may happen at some point in the future.
(Edit: my comment and the preceding comment were originally in a different separate thread and were merged in here, so we didn’t see the previous responses by others in this thread before responding in those)
As I mentioned above, I believe it’s legitimate for the reasons I outlined. I notice also that @fmills1d asked about it in an official Wyze News topic, so hopefully someone from Wyze will provide a response there.
Not sure why I also got the popup in main app screen and worst is that it’s showing app version 3.8.5 but I have app 3.8.6 ![]()
Ditto. I just got the pop-up despite having a newer version of the app than it was telling me to update to. I think they just sent the update notice to everyone..
Don’t bother to update. Can’t even log in. Total waste of time.
My doorbell is offline also since the update to 3.8.6.723
Then WHY is the patch/update NOT in Play Store?
I skipped it. I have 3.8.6 already so ?? If the patch makes it to play store I will update.
That’s a question for Wyze and their clumsy communications team. Other users with more recent app versions (like the 3.8.6 Android hotfix) are also reporting seeing this message, because they apparently blasted it to everyone without much explanation.
There is no patch for anyone running app version 3.8.5 or greater.
3.8.6.723 is the current Android app version which is later/greater/newer than 3.8.5.
The issue will be for those running older than app version 3.8.5 against current and future cam firmware versions.
I received the same update notice as the others. The issue is or appears to be EVERYONE receive the “update” notice. Less informed users will blindly CLICK. Let fun begin!
If you already are running 3.8.5 or greater, clicking the link will result in no action as you can’t update to an older version via the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.
