Integration with Alexa (Echo Show)

I have been trying to get my two Wyze Battery Cam Pro cameras to connect to an Echo Show 5 to see either live camera views or events. All devices are connected on the same network and the Wyze skill is enabled on the Echo Show, but the Alexa app times out waiting for the cameras to respond.

So far Wyze Tech Support and Engineering have offered up only the suggestions of a restart as a fix. That’s not doing it. Any experience out there with getting these things to work together properly to see the feed on my Echo Show? I can see the live view without issue within the Alexa app on my phone.

Thanks

@george.m.simpson - sorry to report, but that is not going to happen. The bcp’s won’t stream in the alexa app either. And I have mine wired. Not sure what the issue is and whether it is a Wyze problem or Amazon problem with the feed into or out of the AWS servers. Same is true of WCO v1&v2 but at least you get a message upfront in the alexa app.

What is your secret for getting a stream in the alexa app? I have android and there is no livestream, just times out after an extended period of time trying to connect.

I have been able to get the BCP to stream to the Alexa app. Just to confirm, I had updated all firmware and versions of the apps and reinstalled and linked everything together. I’m thinking the changes I made to the Alexa permissions seemed to get things flowing to the Alexa app. I turned on the permissions for camera, contacts, location, microphone and nearby devices, which seemed to get me to view the cameras on the app. It does takes upwards of 20-30 seconds to connect, but I do see the live view on the app. My assumption is that if I can get it on the app, the Echo Show is a reasonable next step.

I have been able to get the camera view (including the multiview!) active on my Echo Show 5, but NOT consistently. Given that I have been able to connect a couple of times, I’m thinking I just need the right combination of events/actions or recite the right incantation for it to work. Wyze support was of little to no help. They have pushed me to Amazon. Still working with them on this topic. Will post an update if I get to the right combo.

@george.m.simpson - I have an interesting dilemma and may have to also resort to some incantations.

a. First I examined the Alexa app in my phone settings and it was labeled “Deep sleeping” - wtf…
I use the app everyday, what’s with deep sleeping. Reenabled and enabled a couple permissions and
tried the BCP’s, no luck. Still no streaming in Alexa.

b. My phone is normally connected to my primary mesh network with active 2.4 and 5 wifi bands. Yet I do have a totally separate 2.4 for all IoT devices, especially Wyze cams. My BCP’s are not on that wifi network but the main mesh. Why??? Probably because they were marketed as compatible with 5ghz and also stated on the box they came in, but have since learned that was a Wyze falsehood. They are not compatible with 5ghz, only 2.4ghz. I sent a photo of the packaging box to Wyze. They also had to clean up their website which still had 5ghz compatible on it.

c. Switched my phone to the dedicated 2.4 IoT network and tried again. 1 BCP streams and 1 does not. It appears switching the BCP’s to the IoT network may be the solution. That means a setup and they are outside mounted up requiring a ladder. I need to investigate why that 1 does not before I do new setups.

I probably won’t have an update until Monday.

Not to derail this thread, but Wyze Battery Pro should be able to connect to 5GHz band as per their FCC filing here. I remember you did mention that the previous firmware update for BCP 1.4.1.2289 on May 23 2024 might have potentially bricked the 5GHz.

If you haven’t tried already perhaps you can try to see if Deco’s “Connection Preference” feature will fix your problem. Click here for the guide. If you don’t see it, then update to the latest Deco app version and XE75 firmware.

The 2.4GHz vs 5 is an interesting one! I had read that the BCPs worked best on 2.4GHz but I know my echo Show is on the 5GHz band. I thought it was z long shot that might be an issue and asked Support 8f that could be an issue. No response on that one (that was early in the journey). I will try to align them to see if that does anything. My results even with the app are still flaky. I did find another permission deep in the Alexa app that didn’t allow camera access. It’s odd that sometimes the damn thing works and others it d9es n9t. Seems as though some settings are n9t sticky. I may try to run the app on a tablet to see if I can get some stability. More later!

@grapefruityoda - Thank you. My Deco has firmware ver. 1.2.8 Build 20240328 Rel. 43136 which is the latest to my knowledge. I have tried the connection preference route, but strangely, my Deco doesn’t like changes made from it’s auto connect to node with best connection. In my case, both cams are connected to the same node with 2.4ghz as the selected wifi frequency. But the Deco always puts them back to Auto Select.

Re: 5ghz, as I recall during that thread, multiple Wyze 'insiders" disputed the 5ghz compatibility and “vehemently” stated never 5ghz only compatible to 2.4ghz like all other Wyze cams. Interesting that the Wyze app and website are both stating 5ghz and I was sure they changed that. I have to search for that previous thread.

I’ll try the network switch to 5ghz tomorrow and report back afterwards of success or failure.

Looks like the 2.4 vs. 5 GHz did the trick for me. I now able to view both my cameras using my Echo Show 5! Thanks to those in this thread that helped provide some input and reinforcement to get me to this point. While I am not able to show both cameras in the multi view, I can at least show them individually.

Just to confirm, I have enabled the access to all the permissions ( not my usual practice ), updated all firmware including my mesh network and have them all working on the 2.4GHz band. So far so good on the Echo Show. Next up I will see if this work work with my Fire Stick. I don’t use it for much else now that I have a couple of Roku’s and an Apple TV.

Update to my BCP’s connections to 5ghz network in Deco Mesh.

a. Moved both to primary router and set the network preference to 5ghz. The results were both disconnected totally and no longer appeared in the Deco.

b. Both went from connected to offline in the Wyze app. Did all the troubleshooting activity you can imagine including rebooting the mesh. No changes, still offline and not showing in the mesh.

c. After several hours,1 BCP came back online connected to main router and to 5ghz network. 2nd BCP remained offline and no troubleshooting procedures worked. Including a reset in place with me on a ladder. Even pulled the sdcard.

d. Dismounted and brought BCP Inside. Tested sdcard and it’s good. Connected and new cable and power adapter. Nothing. Next move is to do a reset with a setup. Did not work initially so I tried a couple more times, finally heard “ready to connect”

e. Started setup and then got message that the network was not recognized. No problem. Camera and phone on different networks
Made the adjustments and started setup again. This time the dual band network would not connect. After 2 more failed attempts, switched to the dedicated 2.4ghz
network and setup completed.

f. Went back to mesh router and BCP 1 is still connected at 5ghz and I received a display on Echo show from a routine. Next went to BCP 2 that is now 2.4ghz and made changes to move to preferred 5ghz network and it succeeded.

g. Oddly. BCP 1 is showing network connected as 5ghz and the preference network is also still 5ghz. BCP 2 is showing network connected as 2.4ghz and preference network as 5ghz. Both are online and working in the Wyze app. It does not make sense that the dual band network was not recognized for BCP 2 setup, but switched over for BCP 1.

I have remounted BCP 2 and now will play the waiting game to see how long the connections last. Both are mounted outside and wired making a full round of troubleshooting not easily performed.

I also have to “eat crow” on BCP’s compatibility with 5ghz although I have had multiple past failures.

Conclusion: 1 - success and 1 - 3/4 success short-term with 5ghz and BCP compatibility. Stay tuned for long-term success update.
