I have had a Wyze plug since 2022 that my Yamaha receiver is plugged into. I was able to control the volume using Alexa commands. A few weeks ago that feature stopped working. There have been no changes or additions to my system. All apps are up to date. Any suggestions to get that feature back?
As far as I know, a Wyze plug would have nothing to do with a volume control on your receiver. Most likely Alexa is talking to a Yamaha app.
The only thing the plug can do is turn power on and off.
That makes sense. But for years I was able to control Yamaha volume using Alexa. Don’t know why I can’t anymore. I never had a Yamaha app. Thanks for responding.
It was probably an Alexa Skill for Yamaha. This seems relevant:
Maybe Amazon did something that broke the skill, or maybe you need to reset or re-link the skill somehow in the Alexa app? (I don’t use Alexa much, so I’m not going to be useful for specifics for this.)

As I said, I never had a Yamaha app. And musiccast is not compatible with my receiver. I have no idea how it was working all these years.
Maybe something like this:
To control amplifier volume using a Fire Stick and Alexa, you’ll need to set up a home theater group in the Alexa app that includes both your Fire TV and compatible Echo devices. This allows you to use voice commands like “Alexa, turn up the volume” or use the Fire TV remote to adjust the volume.
Here’s a more detailed breakdown:
- Set up Home Theater Group:
- Open the Alexa app and go to Devices.
- Tap the “+” icon and select “Combine Speakers”.
- Choose “Home Theater”.
- Select your Fire TV device and compatible Echo devices (speakers).
- Name your home theater group and assign it to a room.
- Enable CEC on your TV:
- Navigate to your TV’s settings menu.
- Find the CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) option and enable it.
- The CEC feature on your Fire Stick should be enabled by default.
- Configure Equipment Control (if needed):
On your Fire TV, go to Settings > Equipment Control > Manage Equipment.
Add your amplifier or receiver as a device.
Follow the on-screen instructions to configure volume and power control with your Fire TV remote.
- Control Volume:
Say commands like “Alexa, turn up/down the volume on [Home Theater Group Name]”. *
Using Fire TV Remote:
.Use the volume buttons on your Fire TV remote after setting up the home theater group and equipment control.
Additional Notes:
Ensure your audio system supports HDMI ARC/eARC if you are connecting it directly to the Fire TV.
If your amplifier or receiver is not automatically detected, you may need to select it from a list during the equipment setup process.
You can also manage your linked devices and audio settings in the Alexa app and Fire TV settings.
Thanks for those directions. First time I’ve seen them. Went through the entire process and the result is “ remote error” sorry fire tv is having trouble finishing your remote setup. You can try again now or skip and try later in the equipment control section of settings. Try again results in same error. As I’ve said before I never had to do this in the past yet was able to control Yamaha volume.
It was just a thought… My suspicion is something else was controlling your volume through the amp via Alexa. Hard to say what since every stereo/tv setup is different.
yeah its so weird that it just stopped working all of a sudden. i made no changes/additions in the alexa app at all. i dont even recall setting up a skill to control the volume. thanks for your help
Do you happen to have a remote that controls all your audio/video devices. For years I had a Logitech device that could do this. You could program it to turn on devices in a certain order, set volume, turn channels, etc. . I cannot remember if it was Alexa enabled. As I remember it was a 2 part device. A unit that everything plugged into and a handheld remote. The community was highly irritated when Logitech dropped support.
Just a thought since you don’t remember setting up an Alexa routine.
yeah I had one of those tears ago. don’t think it would work for my needs since mine was way before Alexa!
