Go to Shop in Wyze app > shop all > accessories then scroll down. It was shipped with the dbv2 which has no chime and was meant for use with your existing house chime. It was discovered as a solution to some duo issues and as a means to keep duo’s battery charged using the doorbell transformer.
I like to live life on the edge. I’m thinking my next project will be a no solicitation sign and wire the metal doorbell direct to 220 with a wet welcome mat.
I smell a lawsuit or is the mat on fire?
Yeah!!
Both!!
His company says he was the hottest salesman. He is amped up and on fire.
Not using a mechanical chime. I had a 16VAC initially and now has a 24VAC 500ma. I’m pretty darn sure it was wired correctly. The old wyze wire door bell had no issues what so ever. Don’t understand how is this newer, and more capable one had soooo much issues.
I’ve measured it wired at the door bell and getting close to 24VAC. Do I need a more powerful transformer? Like the one linked above?
I don’t hear the current transformer humming.
500 Ma is not nearly enough. That’s 1/2 amp. 20 VA would be marginal. The originals which come with mechanical doorbells are 20Va and not enough power for any doorbell cams.
You need more power.
I’ll get the one form above. 40VA and report back.
20VA is plenty for a single doorbell cam, even at 16volts, especially if there is no mechanical chime involved.
Since they’re all about the same price, personally I’d go with the 20V 30VA one which leaves room for growth.
But yes, 500ma is probably borderline, that’s 12.5VA, technically above what the doorbell spec calls for but awful close (and who knows how much current it is actually capable of, often they can’t actually do the full rating).
@nate123 also check polarity, I’m not sure if the wyze has circuitry built in to correct backwards wiring or not. Probably not the issue, seems to be not enough power to both run and charge the cam at the same time, so likely the larger transformer will do it. If you prefer to stick with the plug in type you have now, look for one rated at least 1000MA at 20 or 24V (personally I like to play it safe and go with 20V but if your current one is reading 24 at the doorbell, should be fine, you have enough wiring that the voltage drop is where it should be).
I’ve had the dbv1, v2 and now the duo. Polarity is not an issue.
Every “smart” doorbell I’ve dealt with (admittedly only a few) have provisions for that, I just didn’t want to make any ASSumptions since I haven’t installed any of these for anyone, especially because with a mechanical chime and controller thrown into the mix it could potentially have an impact even if the doorbell itself is fine.
I’m sad to report that with the 40VA power adapter, the door bell is still not charging correctly. I’m beyond frustrated now. I think I’ll just contact wyze support and return the unit. I measured the voltage at the door bell and it shows 20V. There is no polarity sign on the unit. It might be a definitive unit. This is the third power adapter I’ve entry.
Did you install the chime controller or bypass your mechanical chime?
Check the wiring too, 20V at the doorbell from a 16.5v transformer is pretty high, you sure there isn’t another transformer wired in somewhere? Also confirm that you’re using the right terminals going to the right places, you should be using the 16.5V and 0V terminals, 16.5 going to the mechanical chime, which then goes to the doorbell, and 0v coming from the doorbell directly. GND probably isn’t needed or just wire it to the screw on the outlet. In reality you can swap the 16.5 and 0 it doesn’t really matter which ones goes to the chime and which to the doorbell directly.
I sent mine back. IMO not only was it flaky and wouldn’t charge the build quality compared to the DB Pro it replaced was like a knock off compared to a Samsung items as to feel, fit and finish. The top mount retaining screw is a less than ideal design where moisture from dew / rain will intrude. The plastic feels cheap and its design is clunky. Being black was also quite ugly on the white trim with no other black items it looks as aesthetically pleasing as a wart.
I put the DB Pro back and the only camera coverage I lost is a tiny corner slice of the front mat.
I don’t have a mechanical chime. Wire is directly wired to the door bell. Using 0V and 16V terminals.
And it is still draining the battery or just not showing a charge indicator all the time? Sounds like it may be a faulty unit if it can’t keep the battery charged off that adapter (assuming the adapter is what it claims to be).
