Firmware Update Ruined My old Phone Access

WHY would you kill my old phone from working with the new firmware?? I have an old phone I use as a “monitor” to keep on my desk so I can see my front door while in my basement office. Today I updated the firmware on all the V3 pan/tilt cams and now I cant access the cameras!! It’s an old Android phone that Playstore wont update the App any longer but I’ve had it installed for years and still worked just fine. I can still see my OLD V1 camera that didnt get a firmware update but not the V3 cams. WHY???

Welcome to the Forum, @pdmoney!

Wyze announced security improvements that they call VerifiedView last year, and they have been incorporating security updates into various Cams’ firmware since then. When they made that announcement, they included this message in their blog post about it:

We will also allow older app versions to access their own camera content without performing the verification process for a few more months to allow everybody time to update.

They didn’t say exactly how long users would be able to continue to access cameras with the older app, and it’s definitely been a few months since that announcement. Over time, newer firmware releases for some Cams have also required the newest app versions for full compatibility.

If I recall correctly, the video that accompanied the announcement said that old Cams would not receive updates incorporating VerifiedView because of technical limitations, and they haven’t sold Cam v1 for years, so that explains why you’re still able to use that Cam with your app.

At this point, you essentially have a couple of options:

  1. Switch to a mobile device capable of running a current 64-bit version of Android.
  2. Manually flash you Cam Pan v3 to an older firmware version that would still work with whatever Wyze app version you’re using.

If you are looking for a newer device as @Crease suggested, here is a great buy on a Samsung Tab A11 for $119.99. I just bought a Tab A11+ with a slightly bigger screen.

Both have a 64 bit MediaTek processor and will get Android updates through about 2032 (see the top 2 rows on this link).

BTW, I hear what you are saying about older devices. My Pixel 6 Pro will get its last Android update and reach its end of life this October 2026. I plan on getting a Pixel 11 Pro which should be out by this fall.

Welcome to the real world. Reality is that software evolves and routinely has to set cutoffs for how old of hardware or software it can support. This applies to almost everything that uses software / firmware. Sometimes that is somewhat arbitrary, but in most cases, there are hard reasons that can not be changed. New firmware requires hooks into software that simply does not exist in older software. Similar reason why most new PC software wont run on Windows XP for example.

Amen to that as we would still be typing DOS commands

Don’t forget about before DOS.

You don’t ever use the macOS terminal? What is wrong with you?

No need to. Once in a blue moon I do and only if the feature is hidden or unavailable in the GUI.
