Wyze v4 firmware broke 6 cameras at once

I let the app update all of them at the same time and all six are having issues connecting now. Sometimes they’re very slow and sometimes they can’t connect and fail and I have to come back later to retry the connection and then it works.

While at the same time my old V3 cameras that didn’t get an update are working perfectly fine as they used to.

This is definitely an incident related to the latest firmware update

Does anyone know how to fix this? All six out of six v4 are doing this. They were super reliable before the firmware update.

What versions of the app and firmware are you using? That detail is important for understanding the problem. Because of the way Wyze has been slow-rolling firmware releases different users seem to see firmware updates available at different times, so saying “latest” can mean different things to different people.

Have you checked in the Wyze News and/or Beta categories for topics that correspond to your app and firmware versions to see if other users are describing what you’re experiencing?

If you believe that your experience is related entirely to a firmware change, then you could try flashing a Cam v4 back to an earlier firmware version to see if that resolves the issue. If I was seeing this on all Cam v4s, then I’d be inclined to start with one and test that for a while before flashing all others.

In order for the community, and Wyze, to assist you better, please always provide all of the following.

  • Phone/tablet type and OS version on phone/tablet
  • Wyze app version (instructions here)
  • Firmware version installed on Wyze device ( Device settings (gear icon top-right) → Device Info → Installed firmware version)

This is needed because “latest” and “up to date” are subjective to when a post is added to the forum. (It is also important to distinguish whether an issue is actually with a beta version, as opposed to a public release.)

You might try asking Wyze for a rollback?

Pixel 8 pro latest January update.

App version 3.10.5.749

Firmware 4.52.9.5332

Amateur hour at Wyze. They pushed a cam update that was backward incompatible with their phone app.

The release notes for the firmware clearly say it uses a new security protocol and requires a minimum app version.

thanks wyze. you bricked my cam also.

Thanks. I hardly think the wyze crowd is the release note reading type. In any event, I spent my career in industrial systems and I always forced the application upgrade before dumping firmware updates out. All they’re going to get is hatemail from moves like that.

Update your phone or tablet app to current and you should be ok. Wyze dumped out firmware updates that were ahead of their required app updates. Dumb. That would be like Tesla updating the firmware in the regenerative brakes system before the main control system - and disabling the brakes as a result.

Wyze needs to force an up update PRIOR to any non-backwards compatible firmware updates. Otherwise, they’re going to get lots of F U email.

I mean, when it prompts you to update, it has a “what’s new” button. Not that hard to tap and read it. But as you say, you should always have the most recent app regardless.

The firmware was released long after the app was updated.

For example the v4 firmware that requires the new authentication was released on December 3rd and rolled out over the course of about a month.

The required app version to support that firmware was released on November 3rd. 1 month prior.

I looked thru the app settings and then through the iPhone settings. I don’t see anything that stops Wyze from pushing app updates, nor do I see any where to turn off updates. Unless I missed it, they have the freedom to update the app and the firmware in the right order, but chose not to. I had to go to the apple store and manually update my app.

App updates are handled by your phone’s OS and they cannot override that setting. If you have auto update on in your OS/store, then it should have had plenty of time to update before the firmware started rolling out. They also rolled out this firmware in phases to smaller groups rather than doing it all at once.

Some cams allow you to turn off automatic firmware updates, but I’ve found even with them on it warns and prompts you to update. At some point maybe it does it automatically if you leave that on, but generally I leave it off. But on that warning is where you can tap the “what’s new” and see the notes.

If you have automatic updates disabled, in theory they could check the app version you’re running on the current device and not offer the firmware update. But since updates often include security fixes, I’m guessing they wouldn’t want to wait for a user with a specific app version to connect to the cam before letting the automatic update happen. If you have auto update enabled, the assumption is you want the updates ASAP. Most updates don’t require any special app version, but this particular one (and some others for other cameras in the past) do require a minimum version. Waiting a month after the app update seems like a reasonable amount of time to me.

the mfr. should know better. it’s not up to the user.

Can you elaborate on what they should know? Is it a huge deal that you had to go in and tap “update” in your phone’s store app (assuming you don’t have automatic updates for apps enabled)? I would think if you’re not allowing apps to update as needed, you’d also disable automatic firmware updates?

in wyze’s defense, it does work on one of my phones.

If you have older 32 bit phones running the 2.x app then they will not work with this new firmware (and several of the newer cameras also). In order to work with that app you’ll need to downgrade the cams, but that’s a short term solution as the old app has gradually been losing compatibility and at some point they’re going to start strictly enforcing the new security protocols and measures, at which point that old app will be useless.

Is there any way that this can be fixed? My issue is that after the firmware update I’m constantly having an issue getting the phone app to view the camera live. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t and this is all six cameras that are V4. I have three cameras that are v 3 and do not have any issue. Neither did any of the V4 cameras have an issue before the update of the firmware.

I already updated app. I deleted the app and installed it.

I’m out of ideas.
