I finally had a response from the security@wyze.com email address on Wednesday that essentially confirmed that I was banned because at one point they were seeing more than 500 login requests in a single day from my Homebridge plugin. I disabled that plugin on Tuesday, before they responded. When I asked if they were now seeing fewer login attempts and if they could whitelist my IP, I haven’t had a response in 48 hours…
And, just like that, after bugging them some more and giving them my public IP address, they have unbanned me. So this problem is now resolved for me, but I’m certainly not using Homebridge anymore.
I’m pretty sure what happened to you is what happened to me. I had trouble with the 2-factor authentication getting recognized in time
I went the other route and had Att change my ip address. I’m currently using homebridge and haven’t had any issues with homebridge since getting it switched.
With homebridge. I deleted the Wyze plugin and started fresh. I set it up as a child bridge before trying to login into it. I used the authenticator app which gives you like 30 sec to login. So I put all the info in once I had the fresh 30 sec saved it, then restarted just the Wyze child bridge. I don’t know how homebridge works, but if you restart the whole thing it times out before it gets to Wyze.
Supposedly if you get the code from a text message you have a lot longer to login.
How do you explain my situation then? Everything was working fine for I don’t remember how long and all of the sudden an hour ago, I get “Failed to update device list (error code -1011)”. I turn the VPN on and everything is fine again. I have nothing running on my network except three Wyze v3’s and three Kasa smart plugs and I don’t have HomeBridge. ![]()
Does your internet provider give you a static IP address or does it grab from a pool of addresses?
A static IP address isn’t going to change. It’s assigned to you like a phone number or house address
If it’s grabbing from a pool of addresses then it’s like a temporary address. In this case your IP address might change when your modem is rebooted, after a power outage. If your internet provider has an outage. Depending on the modem there might even be a setting that cycles through ip addresses
Being that it’s not working now. I would take note of the ip address you’re having issues with and compare it against what it shows when it is working. See if it’s the same or different
Unless we can link this to the Kasa devices. The only Kasa device I have is the outdoor plug.
My router is set to reboot at 3:00 AM. I got the error around 11 AM, way past the IP change (if there was one). The error cleared out about 20 minutes later and is fine again. I doubt it is Kasa as they are not on a schedule and I don’t see them talking to Kasa cloud. This is definitely Wyze as they have admitted but they don’t know how to fix it.
It just happened again and lasted for about five minutes. What I find it weird is that my router is set to reboot daily and in turn gets a new WAN IP address (not much I can do, it is how the ISP has set it up). So if Wyze is blocking IP addresses, why it happens when the ISP is assigning new address every morning?
It might just be that you can’t connect to the Wyze server because you don’t have internet at that point
I’m not really a networking guy. But if you have a modem/router all in one it could be that the router is starting up before the modem finishes
If you have 2 different devices. A separate modem and router. Then more than likely that’s why you can’t connect. You are on Wi-Fi, but your network isn’t connected to the outside world until that modem finishes its startup cycle. The app even though connected to Wi-Fi can’t establish the connection to Wyze because for those few moments you don’t have internet
Wyze blocked my ip and from the looks of it some others which is why our apps couldn’t connect to Wyze.
Your issue seems like it has always been intermittent. Maybe it’s possible you got a bad ip address that Wyze previously blocked? I imagine the modems resets the same time each day…have you noticed it’s always around that time you can’t access it?
My modem/router reboots at 3:00 AM. The “Failed to update device list” error happened around 11:00 AM, way pass the point were there was no internet.
Maybe, but the WAN IP address at home never changes, it is a static address supplied by the ISP and hasn’t changed for over ten years. At home, I used to get the error intermittently, but that stopped about three-four weeks ago.
Just got mail from them…
All fine now, like before
Thank you for contacting Wyze Cybersecurity!
For security reasons, we had temporarily blocked all incoming connections originating from Serbia. However, after re-evaluating the situation, we have released the block today.
Can you please verify if you are able to access your devices on your network? (without any VPN)
We apologize for the inconvenience caused.
Best,
Wyze Cybersecurity Team
I had received a similar email just stating that the security team had to get involved, but I had my ip address changed at that point
I think @habib issue is different. When Wyze blocks an ip address everything seems to suggest it’s a permanent thing. Having a static there would be no access at all
I don’t think this error code is specific to having an ip address blocked, but more so the app not connecting to Wyze.
For most of us it was because are ip address was blocked.
@habib is it possible that you might be at the edge of your Wi-Fi range when you are having issues? Possibly the phone is still showing you are on Wi-Fi, but far enough where data isn’t transmitting over Wi-Fi?
I know you said you could access with a vpn, but when was that vpn turned on? Only asking because the vpn working kind of negates being on the edge of Wi-Fi theory.
Not in a million years
Two different networks, two different ISPs both times sitting within 5 ft of router.
I turn the VPN as soon as I get the error on my iPad or iPhone. Also, switching to LTE solves the problem.
Update! 3 weeks it seems Wyze was blocking my IP address. I had do contact customer service and tell them Wyze is blocking my IP address. They didn’t give me any specifics. Just that security figured it out and I’m up and running fine again.
