I installed an external microphone on a Wyze Cam v3. It isn’t difficult. I opened the camera, disconnected the microphone connector, drilled a small hole in the back ( hole is just large enough to feed the cable in, fed a long cable through the hole, put a piece of shrink tubing on the cable I fed inside (did not shrink it yet) soldered the cable to the wires on another compatible connector ( The connector is very small, I used one from my electronic junk pile that has wires attached.) (The internal microphone connector can be used but that will require cutting the wires which will permanently disable the internal microphone. The internal microphone won’t work with this mod anyway), I insulated the soldered wires from each other with electrical tape where the wires were bare, connected the cable connector to the camera, pulled the cable back through the hole leaving enough extra to facilitate easy removal of the camera “guts”, slid the shrink tubing down the cable so the end is touching the case inside at the hole, pulled the cable longer inside the case, shrunk the tubing with the soldering iron, pulled the cable back into the case, the shrink tubing prevents more of the cable from being pulled out, put the camera back together, put shrink tubing on the other end of the cable, (didn’t shrink it yet), determined the voltage polarity of the wires (approximately 1.8v is present to power the microphone), soldered a small electret condenser microphone capsule to the wires paying attention to voltage polarity (-ve goes to terminal that also connects to the metal case of the microphone), insulated the bare wires from each other, slid the shrink tubing so one end touches the microphone at its bottom, shrunk the tubing, connected the camera to power, tested, it works.

Wow, thanks for the detailed write-up, Grim_Reaper. That’s a clever workaround to get better audio on the v3. Curious, have you noticed any impact on the waterproofing of the camera after making the mod? I’d imagine the small hole and cable might make it a bit more vulnerable outdoors. Just wondering if you’ve run into any issues with that yet.
