Ok. I bought the new Doorbell Duo and left Ring. However I have “phantom” doorbell rings from the mechanical doorbell that I can’t get to stop. I’ve messed with the wiring all I know how to do. The only thing that seems to stop it is disconnecting it all together. However then it just runs off the battery and that drains FAST! I think they say it is supposed to last 6 months but I’m thinking that’s only if you monitor like 12 inches in front of your door. I see some other posts on this but no real solution. Thanks everyone.
The solution is one of 2 options:
- Bypass the chime with a jumper of sorts so the doorbell gets continuous power and doesn’t ever ring the mechanical chime
- Buy the required Chime Controller device from the app for $13.99 (says it’s for the Video Doorbell V2) and then you can control the Mechanical chime without all the phantom rings.
I have the same problem. Did you figure anything out?
Tried that… the Wyze chime controller (from the video doorbell v2) does NOT work for the duo cam. I had a trouble ticket with the techs that went from 1 tech to another (3 or 4 in total for 3 weeks) and they couldn’t figure it out. They told me to return the controllers for a refund.
Currently, the controller is no longer listed for sale in the Shop on the app. Hopefully, it’s just a temporary out-of-stock issue.
That’s weird. I just installed one this weekend with the chime controller and it’s working. I wonder why it didn’t work for you. Do you know what the voltage/amps rating of your transformer is? I have heard that the lower ones sometimes have problems.
I just checked and it’s showing up as in stock for me, but I searched for it in the search bar. Maybe that’s the only way to get to it?
@carverofchoice - It was showing up when you clicked on “Shop all” at the top, then it stopped. I didn’t think to do a search. Thanks! @jbrancacciojr - yes it does as stated by @carverofchoice. I have 2 controllers installed from dbv2’s and now I have 2 duos installed with the same controllers. Have not skipped a beat in almost a month. Mechanical chime rings as it did with the v2’s.
@carverofchoice - The chime controller has been moved to the Accessories tab in the Shop. Makes sense.
Oh good to know. Yeah that makes sense. It should show up in the Shop all though. Weird that it stopped.
What are you working with and what wiring schemes have you tried? I don’t have the Duo Cam Doorbell, but I discovered in the process of troubleshooting some issues with my Video Doorbell v2 that the mechanical chime had been wired incorrectly (the wire from the transformer was actually connected to the FRONT terminal and the wire from the doorbell was connected to TRANS—this was before I moved into this house, when it still had a standard “dumb” doorbell), and resolving that allowed me to have success with the standard wiring scheme for the Chime Controller. (This was after I’d switched to the alternate wiring scheme while working through a ticket with Wyze Support.)
Other Forum users have reported success with the Chime Controller and Duo Cam Doorbell, so sharing some details about your setup might help us to assist you in figuring this out.
Thanks for your input. I already spent 3 weeks with Wyze tech support, which was basically no help at all. They asked for pictures of my set up then after a couple weeks just told me there is NO solution and to return the controllers. Which I did.
Since then they have updated the Wyze app to include use home mechanical chime. That made the chime ring when the button is pushed but I am still getting “phantom doorbell rings” throughout the day. I am trying to find the doorbell transformer, its not in any of the typical places. I have lived here and done just about every house repair/installation for 57 yrs. The doorbell transformer is the only thing I have never seen. In the 1950s when this house was built they did crazy things to save time adn money. I will keep searching.
I am searching the house for the transformer. Like I said in one of my other replies I have lived here and done just about every repair/installation/renovation for 57 yrs. The house was built in the 1950s. I have looked in all the typical places and some not so typical places for the transformer. I will keep looking, I am thinking it maybe under powered for doorbell Cams, probably the original doorbell transformer. I have the original doorbell chime and it still works fine.
Did you try looking at basement light junction boxes if any have pull cord on/off switches? When I replaced the transformer at my son’s house and discovered it was not attached to the electrical panel, I had to start searching. I did a process of elimination with wiring and then started tracing. The transformer was attached to a basement light junction box and connected to the wiring inside that was from a panel breaker. Not ideal but it worked. Another place I have heard about is in the wall behind the chime box.
Hopefully you’ll have success in the basement, it’ll make life much easier for you.
Look for double strand loose wiring along the basement ceiling, maybe even strung next to or near conduit and try tracing it in both directions.
Yeah, apparently that was a pretty big omission from the Android version of the app after Duo Cam Doorbell was introduced.
That’s why I believe installing the Chime Controller would be your solution, based on what community members have reported in other topics.
I’ve seen this in YouTube videos (which I guess gives an indication of the content I like to watch) along with suggestions of other places to look. I’ve also seen Forum members mention that their doorbell chime transformers are in difficult-to-access areas of the attic.
What do you read when you measure the AC voltage?
Thanks for that added info about the attic. I do recall seeing that but it had escaped from my memory bank. Another one of my all too lately frequent senior moments.
This is a good call, too:
If the wiring insulation colors can be determined at the actual doorbell button’s location, then those are the colors I’d be looking for elsewhere. (I’m aware that they might have an outer jacket for the pair that’s a different color entirely, but if you trace that to terminals, then you should be able to see the insulation colors there.)
Just installed Duo Cam Doorbell this morning. Started getting phantom rings pretty much immediately. When I checked within the mechanical chime box could hear constant electrical noise. I had “power saving” enabled in the app so whenever the doorbell would detect motion or lighting would change, would get a phantom ring.
incredibly annoying as I already drilled holes in my stucco to attach this thing. removed permanent power so my kids wouldn’t get scared through the night, but that is part of the reason I bought this thing, no need to charge a battery and I can still hear my mechanical chime.
chime controller is not showing up anywhere I search.
Did you check the forum for duo issues before purchasing? Did you check availability of the chime controller first lbefore purchasing duo?
Don’t mean to “pour salt on an open wound” but this was avoidable. Luckily I was replacing dbv2’s and had the controllers already installed, but did my “due diligence” and searched for issues before ordering.
Was there a jump wire (short double ended hook wire) in with the screws and wire nuts packet? That could be an alternate solution. Check the Forum and YouTube.
Hopefully, Wyze recognizes this supply and demand issue and restock asap.
Did you check the forum for duo issues before purchasing?
Wyze should include your stipulations on their sales page: “check for issues on our forum before purchasing”. Give me a break. I researched YouTube videos for a few hours and they didn’t mention any of these issues.
Don’t mean to “pour salt on an open wound” but this was avoidable.
Yes, not buying Wyze products would have made this avoidable.
Was there a jump wire (short double ended hook wire) in with the screws and wire nuts packet?
No, but thank you. I will just have to short the connection in my chime box and not have the physical doorbell chime be available any longer. This should be made clear on the sales page and within the setup documentation.
