Need some help wiring my door camera. I planned to use existing wiring from my old door speaker and button. See the attached pic. What wires to the two on the back of my door cam? I tried the black and red from the house side but no luck. Figured I better ask someone before I mess things up. Appreciate any advice.
I am not an electrician.
I think the most straightforward answer would probably be to grab a multimeter (I’ve been using an inexpensive one from Harbor Freight Tools for years) and do your own testing so that you know what’s actually supplying power there.
What did you have at that location before, and how was that wired? Your mention of “speaker and button” makes me think this was a terminal for some sort of intercom system and may be more complex than a setup that uses a typical transformer and mechanical chime, so I wonder if you even have a compatible chime at the home. Sharing some more details about what you’re using might be helpful.
If the doorbell button was wired separately from the speaker before you started, then you could also try connecting that wire pair to the terminals on your Video Doorbell v2 to see if it powers up, but I’d still be inclined to test with a multimeter first to verify which wires are supplying power and ensure that you have adequate power to that location.
Shouldn’t you be citing how many years of experience you have?
All of them. I have all of the years of not being an electrician.
Thank you for your reply. Yes, the house side wiring was from an old intercom system (speaker and doorbell) at the front door. Power must be going to it somehow because the old doorbell and speaker worked before I uninstalled it. Wondering if i may need to have an electrician come and pull a standard power line to the box….or just return the wyze camera and put the old intercom plate back,
You’re welcome! I really like my own Video Doorbell v2, and I enjoy trying to help others with it.
This makes me wonder if it’s even compatible with Video Doorbell v2 and its Chime Controller. Have you already installed that component and/or checked chime compatibility at the link I included in my previous post? That’s one of the first things I’d want to know, because Video Doorbell v2 and Chime Controller installation are generally pretty straightforward when used with compatible chimes. The other thing I’d want to know, like I mentioned, is whether or not you have a transformer that’s supplying adequate power to the location where you want to mount the doorbell camera. That’s why I like having a multimeter handy and testing the power early in the process.
It is possible to install Video Doorbell v2 and Chime Controller in locations with “incompatible” chimes, but I think that gets pretty involved, and it’s not something I’ve attempted.
If by “standard power line” you mean the same wiring that powers other devices in the home, then I wouldn’t do that. What Video Doorbell v2 (and other wired Wyze doorbells) wants to see is low-voltage AC, so they recommend a transformer with 16-24 V AC / 10 VA output. If you don’t have that (again, I’m really not sure what you’re dealing with for a transformer or chime in your existing system), then I imagine you could install a compatible mechanical chime and an appropriate transformer and just use the wiring that’s in place (you’d just need one pair of conductors, not all four wires going to the current doorbell button/speaker location), basically taking your old system out of the loop and using the existing wiring as your infrastructure.
I guess that depends on what your goal is and what you ultimately hope to accomplish. Like I said, I like Video Doorbell v2, which is the model that got me to finally replace my old “dumb” doorbell button with a camera, but it’s certainly not the only Wyze option available (they have different comparison charts in the Video Doorbell v2 and Duo Cam Doorbell sections of the Help Center). Obviously there are other brands, too (the first video doorbell I ever installed was an Arlo that my brother-in-law bought, so I installed that for him and my sister), so I guess part of your decision also would take into account how embedded you are in the Wyze ecosystem.
I know this is a lot, and I hope that it makes sense and is helpful. If you can provide some information about your chime and transformer, then I might be able to give a better answer. Certainly feel free to ask whatever questions you might have, too, and I’ll try to answer those.
