Can the house hardware chime be disabled via Waze app on video doorbell v2

Considering upgrading from the original Wyze doorbell. After a couple ding dong ditches with a newborn years ago, we’ve come to appreciate the option to completely disable the chime and rely on the notifications /phone calls when someone rings our doorbell.

If we install the hardware chime controller as recommended, can the hardware chime in our house be disabled/enabled by the Wyze app?

If that is not currently an option, can that be added to the backlog as a feature request? Thanks!

In Video Doorbell v2’s  Settings ➜ Chime, there’s a Do Not Disturb toggle:

I don’t have mine currently connected to the mechanical chime, and I don’t recall what happened when I tried using this feature before, so I can’t personally vouch for its behavior at this time.

If you’re currently using Video Doorbell v1—which bypasses the chime with the jumper—then you could also just install Video Doorbell v2 and Chime Controller (essentially to have Chime Controller in the circuit as a fuse) but bypass the chime, doing something like this[1]:

  • :black_circle: Remove the wire from the chime’s FRONT terminal and connect that to Chime Controller’s black wire.
  • :red_circle: Leave the wire on the chime’s TRANS terminal there and connect Chime Controller’s red wire to that. (You’re just using this screw terminal as a connector for both wires. Alternatively, you could disconnect both wires from the chime entirely and connect them to each other to close the loop.)
  • :white_circle: Leave Chime Controller’s white wire free (or cover with a small piece of electrical tape if you’re concerned that it might move and accidentally touch something it shouldn’t).

This is probably what I’d do (wire the Chime Controller this way) if I was already accustomed to having the hardware chime inactive and just wanted to route power to the Video Doorbell v2. You can always change the wiring later by connecting Chime Controller in the standard fashion[2] if you want Video Doorbell v2 to actuate your chime.

  1. I’m imagining in this scenario that you have a typical 3-terminal mechanical chime and that it’s currently wired correctly, but I don’t like to make too many assumptions and advise that you have confirmation of the wiring by testing it yourself with a multimeter. ↩︎

  2. Continuing the example above—assuming that Chime Controller’s red wire and the home’s transformer wire are both connected to TRANS—you’d just connect Chime Controller’s white wire to the chime’s FRONT terminal. ↩︎

This is amazing, thank you! The Wyze AI chat bot did not know about the do not disturb feature when I asked on the website. I’ll likely install as suggested and leverage the DND feature. Do you know if it will also call our cell phones like v1?

You’re welcome! :+1:

My experience with that (the chatbot) is hit-or-miss…lots of misses.

I think that’s a good plan. If it doesn’t work out the way you want, you can always just disconnect Chime Controller’s white wire from FRONT (if my supposition about your chime is correct). You could even install a small physical toggle switch if you want to get fancy.

Yeah, I don’t know when they changed the feature or moved it (they apparently still need to update the Help Center article), but you can now control that option in two places:

  1. From the app Home screen:  Account ➜ Notifications ➜ Push Notifications ➜ Virtual Calls
  2. From Video Doorbell v2’s live view screen:  Settings ➜ Virtual Calls
