Cam V4 - no longer sees my wifi after FW upgrade to 4.52.8.0648

Hi.
This serves as a warning for everyone. DON’T UPDATE FW to 4.52.8.0648
I made mistake (again. First mistake was buying Waze’s camera) and upgraded FW. Everything worked well on 4.52.7.0367. No issues with wifi.
I received an upgrade notification and agreed to it. After firmware upgrade to 4.52.8.0648 - my camera no longer sees my wifi network.
This is not wifi’s issue as other Wyze cameras I own (Pan V3) are working well with this wifi.
I have a mesh network and single SSID for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. After upgrade, my camera doesn’t recognize my network as 2.4GHz and it cannot be connected.
I also can’t downgrade the firmware. Upon downgrade attempt, purple light blinks once (for a fraction of a second) and nothing happens.

Wyze did it again. My horrible experience with them - got even worse.

That is the same version I am on. I have zero issues. I am using Android 14.

I also have a mesh network with one SSID for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.

Maybe someone will chime in with a better response but this is not a global issue.

Hi.
Android version is irrelevant.
I’ve just managed to downgrade the firmware back to previous version (4.52.7.0367) and all now, all is working fine.
My other Cam Pan V3s are also working well.
This is DEFINITELY a firmware issue.

Regards

To confirm, you should try manually (vs OTA) flashing your v4 to 4.52.8.0648. You can always flash back to 4.52.7.0367 if unsuccessful. You’re missing some nice video and and audio enhancements sticking with previous 4.52.7.0367.

No it’s not. Same camera, same firmware no issues.

Firmware works fine on all four of my devices.

We are running the same firmware.

Do not understand your logic.

I can live with that.

I have 3 - Cam v4’s. - NOT a firmware issue. They work fine.

Mate,

This is a very simple logic:
3 days ago:

  • I have 3 cameras working perfectly fine with my wifi. 2x Pan V3 and 1x Cam V4

2 days ago:

  • There is a firmware pushed only for Cam V4
  • V4 stops seeing WIFI. All other cameras work with the same wifi.
  • The only change is - new firmware for V4

1 day ago:

  • I revert back to older firmware in my Cam V4 - now it works.

If you apply simple logic - the only change is Cam V4 firmware which causes issue - thus - this is a Firmware issue.

Simple

Well, I don’t mind enhancements but I have a simple choice:

  1. New firmware - camera won’t go online
  2. Previous firmware - camera works fine.

Simple choice but not great outcome.

Regards

Don’t forget to turn off automatic firmware updates.

I’m not saying this issue affects EVERY wifi configuration.
My case may be a bit different. I have a mesh setup with single SSID for 2.4GHz and 5GHz. This means, when SSID is broadcasted by router, it’s the same for both ranges.
With older firmware, camera correctly sees the SSID. With new, it stops “seeing” it.
I change my mesh config to “2.4Ghz only” - camera sees my wifi
I change it back to “2.4Ghz + 5Ghz” - al other Wyze cams work, only V4 stops seeing the ssid.

This is a wifi driver issue. Wyze updated wifi driver for this camera before. This time, they messed it up. If you take alook at this forum or reddit - you will notice that Waze messed up wifi a few times before.

Cheers

Done !!!

I have the same v4 firmware and my camera works.

But I guess we can’t see this from each of our view points.

I can live with that.

You’re using a mesh system, most of which attempt to force clients to 5Ghz. Since the v4 supports 802.11AX 2.4ghz, it is possible the mesh “thinks” it can do 5ghz and is trying to force it to that. Why the firmware would have changed that, not sure, but you can try disabling the smart connect/band steering on your mesh system and see if it helps.

The fact it works for you, doesn’t mean firmware is free from bugs. If Waze released only bug-free firmware, they wouldn’t release new firmware versions with “bug fixes” in the change log.
The facts this firmware works for you and has issue in my case, are not mutually exclusive. It simply means, the bug they introduced with recent firmware - does not affect you. I wish I was in your place :slightly_smiling_face:

Now, I hope Wyze fixes the issue (that doesn’t affect you) and soon - we will both have no issues with wifi.

Cheers !

That would be nice.

Best of luck.

I have Wyze Wifi Mesh Pro - Same SSID 2.4 / 5.0 config as you have. They share the same name. No issues here with ANY device in my 60 connected devices.

You probably need to change something in your router. Lost of people have the mixed SSID bands and have no issues with these cameras.

This would be my suggestion as well. Your router is doing something odd with the shared band.

What is your make/model of router? Might be able to research the settings of this router and suggest some changes.

Hi,
I’ve checked a bunch of settings on my router and no 5Ghz forcing is enabled. I use quite high specs (although not the newest) Netgear Orbi mesh.
I appreciate your advice but I still think this is not something I should be fixing on on my side. It should be Wyze fixing their firmware. I can’t be asked to jump hoops, because Wyze changed “something” in their camera firmware.
In my case - Everything else WORKS:

  • I have around 40 devices connected to this wifi
  • 2Ghz devices work well and 5 Ghz devices work well.
  • I have 2 Wyze cam Pan V3 connected to this wifi (those support only 2GHz too) - they work perfectly fine with my wifi
  • This unfortunate Cam V4 - after firmware downgrade - ALSO works well.

Won’t you agree, this problem should be solved on Wyze side, not on my side?
Regards
P.s.
I reported this issue more as a feedback to Wyze. I had so many problems with Wyze cameras recently, I just wanted to let Wyze know (I don’t know if they care) they have introduced a problem affecting (possibly small) group of customers.
I appreciate everyone’s advice - but I strongly believe - this should be fixed by Wyze.

Cheers

If many were having the issue, Wyze needs to fix it. So far, you’re the only one.

How do you know your Orbi is not doing 5ghz band steering? The setting may be buried somewhere, or it may be forced enabled when smart connect (or whatever they call it) is enabled and you can’t even see/change it.

To rule it out, temporarily disable the 5ghz band completely in your router and try connecting the camera. Or create a new SSID or guest network that only has 2.4ghz enabled, not 5. If it works then, your router is to blame. The camera cannot see the 5ghz band at all, it has no idea it is there, so if the router is blocking it from connecting to 2.4ghz, the camera won’t be able to connect.
