Am I in the right place to resolve Prime WiFi SmartOutlet setup issues?

The reason I ask is that the Prime App I use to control the WiFi power switches is that Wyse is mentioned in a couple of places in the Prime App. Are Prime and Wyse brands that use the same underlying tech?

Cheers,
Ike

In order to use the Wyze Outlets, you need to use the Wyze App to add them to your account. Then you can associate them in Alexa or Google Home. No other apps natively works with Wyze.

There are third party add-ons for other products like Home Assistant which works well. But those are not a Wyze Supported products.

Question: When you say Prime App, what are you referring to? Alexa on your Phone can control the Wyze Devices once you add the Wyze Skill.

No, these are marketed by Prime Wire and Cable who branded the product I have as “Outdoor Smart Outlets” and who offer the Prime App to control the product via WiFi. I thought perhaps that because Wyse is mentioned in the setup instructions, that product may be using the same underlying tech however based on you not even knowing who Prime is, I take it that’s not the case.

Maybe it’s similar to the Wyze/Roku arrangement. Does the Prime app crash a lot, too? :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing:

Wyze provides products to other companies like Roku. However, those devices will not work with Wyze and Wyze Branded Devices will not work with those.

@p2788deal is probably spot on.

Are you in the U.S.? Sorry, guess you are.

If it’s Prime Wire & Cable 2-Outlet Outdoor Wi-Fi Remote Control, then that and their indoor outlets don’t even have the same form factors as Wyze outlets (the Roku smart plugs look like Wyze’s hardware), and I can’t even find the Prime App in Google Play Store.

Are you sure it’s Wyze that you’re seeing? You spelled out “Wyse” several times in two different posts, so I’m trying to understand where the confusion is.

Welcome to the Forum, @Ike_Bottema!

Sorry Crease, misspelled Wyze. Google Play store has it as “Prime Wire” app.

WildBill, I’m in Canada.

spamoni, Costco sells the units I have.

p2788deal. Nope the Prime app seems solid, though lacking in some functionality.

As a result of my issue, I’ve been googling about these WiFi controlled units and realized they can be flashed with new firmware (either OTA or wired) to, for example, take them out of the cloud and controlled locally by more functional control software. I suspect the unit I’m having issues with is actually linked to another account I set up with Prime Wire who I’ve contacted to fix that but who say that’s not possible. They claim I can retrain the unit but that doesn’t seem to be possible. There appears to be no user forum with folks such as this helpful bunch of Wyze users. Prolly cheaper to buy another WiFi switch but flashing my units is appealing to me as another tech challenge.

No worries about the spelling. I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something.

Have you attempted a factory reset of the device? I think that’s probably what I’d do if I was having setup issues and thought the unit was linked to a different account, and I wonder if that’s what “retrain the unit” means. I didn’t see any specific instructions for this in the manual linked on the product page that I noted above, but the form factor of the Prime Wire & Cable plug looks nearly identical to those from Feit (and other vendors), and Feit’s instructions say to hold the reset button for ~5 seconds until the indicator starts blinking. If you can put it back into setup mode, then maybe you can start from the beginning as if it’s a new device.

If that doesn’t work and if the device has separate power buttons for each outlet, then I’d try holding one of those in for up to 10 seconds, since the instructions for resetting a Wyze Plug Outdoor say to hold in one of the two power buttons (for 3 seconds), and I’d expect other devices to have similar controls for resets.

I'm still not seeing a "Prime Wire" app in Google Play Store. :man_shrugging:

Incidentally, the Feit app appears to provide access to a subset of devices available in the Smart Life app, and I believe both are based on the Tuya Smart app. While helping my sister and brother-in-law with some smart home stuff, I found that I could set up Feit devices in the Smart Life app and a non-Feit-branded Wi-Fi smart dimmer switch (which the documentation advises to use the Smart Life app) within the Feit app. I wouldn't be surprised if the Prime Wire & Cable products worked the same way and could be set up in multiple apps.

Some Sylvania devices I have use an app with a similar interface. I imagine I could set up some or all of those using the Smart Life app, as well, but I haven't tried.

Once you get it in setup mode, if you still have difficulty attaching it to your network then I’d consider moving it to the same room as your wireless access point and disabling any 5 GHz Wi-Fi you might be using so that your phone is forced to connect to the 2.4 GHz band where you want to attach the device. I’ve had to do that in order to get some problematic IoT devices connected, at least initially. Once the device is working on your network, you should be able to re-enable any 5 GHz (or whatever band) radios you were using before.
