Most outdoor outlets are mounted outlet facing directly out from a house or whatever surface they are mounted on. When you plug an outdoor smart outlet into that which is a traditional plug, it tends to stick pretty far out from the wall it’s plugged into before it can hang down.
90 degree angle plugs allow the smart outlet’s main control box to lean more sleekly down with gravity and creates a better look for almost all uses.
Make the male plug a 90° connector. The device is designed to hang down. Having a straight plug makes it harder to fit in cramped spaces and makes for a stressful bend in the supply wire. Easy manufacturing change.

Have you thought of designing the plug on the outlet to be flush in order to accommodate outdoor electrical outlets. Currently mine remains open when in use.
