5 min Cool Down Not Working

I have 4 OGs - all have SD cards - I do not subscribe to Cam Plus.

Starting yesterday I am seeing multiple events logged within seconds/minutes of each other vs expected 5 min cool down period.

I have tried power cycle, Restart Services and Restart Camera but problem persists.

Any suggestions?

Seems like you’re getting more than you “paid” for. Are all those clips still limited to 12 seconds or are they running longer than that?

I haven’t paid anything - I don’t have a subscription.

So I guess I’m getting the WYZE Loyal Customer Deal !

Since I don’t have a subscription I can’t access the cloud clips.

However, the SD Card recording runs for a full minute.

In the below screenshot you can see the 1 event from 12:34 and 2 events from 12:35 within the 1 min SD Card recording.

I wonder if maybe there is some intermittent connectivity going on with your ISP or something? I have noticed that if my cams reboot the 5 minute timer resets, I wonder if the same happens if they lose their connection briefly or something.

But given the other notification issues that have been going on, maybe just related to them trying to get that sorted out. I haven’t noticed this on any of my OGs but they also don’t usually have multiple events within 5 mins, only my other model cams have that (and they all have notifications disabled).

As a test, can you try switching SD card recording to Continuous Recording instead of Record Events?

I am just wondering if this switch will have an affect on the 5 minute cool down period.

You can always switch it back to how you like it.

Switched to Continuous Recording but still get multiple events.

Next thing to try is turn Detection Sensativity all the way down as a test. You can set back to your liking if it has no effect.

SD card clips are ALWAYS one minute clips.

By design.

I don’t own one and am wonder, does the OG offer continuous recording to the SD card?

Yes

If the “Record to MicroSD Card” is set to “Events Only”, it will trigger recording in 1 minute segments and there is no “SD Recording Cool Down Period”.

The example below shows:

  • A 1 minute clip triggered by motion.
    • The light green segment shows the “Cloud Event and Clip”.
  • About 30 sec later there is more motion:
    • A 2 minute SD Card clip is recorded.
    • there was motion that triggered the 1st minute and the motion continued for more than a minute, so a 2nd minute was recorded.
    • Since this is all within the “5 min CLOUD Cool Down Period” there is no light green segment showing “Cloud Event and Clip”.

Your second event has not tag on it. That’s normal. SD card will record motion even if it is in the “cooldown period”. It just won’t tag/notify.

You said there is a cloud event and clip but if you have a 5 minute cooldown that should mean no subscription? So I’m confused here.

Hi @dave27

Sorry for any confusion:

  • The point of this post was to show that you can have an SD Card Clip that is longer than 1 minute.
  • I do not have a subscription so I am subject to a “5 min Cloud Event and Clip cooldown”
  • Even though i do not have a subscription, I still see “Cloud Event and Clip” images and symbols.
    • I can view the Event Image but I cannot view the Clip.
  • The screenshot in the post was from a few days ago when the “5 min Cloud Event and Clip cooldown” was being enforced on my account - so correct “Your second event has not tag on it. That’s normal.”.
  • The screenshots in other posts in this thread are from today to show that the “5 min Cloud Event and Clip cooldown” IS NOT being enforced on my account so I see the “Cloud Event and Clip” images and symbols within seconds/minutes of each other vs at most every 5 minutes.

If you pull the card you’ll see that it is two 1 minute files. Yes in the app it joins them and they appear as one clip. With “motion only” SD card recording it will continue making 1 minute clips for as long as the motion exists, and will join them together in the app to make them look like one continuous clip.

That’s normal without a subscription. I have the same.

I’m assuming it will be fixed soon enough, I suspect they’ve just messed something up on their end.

You are right … all cameras back to expected “5 minute cooldown” behavior today.

I’m disappointed with WYZE’s poor quality when implementing updates. Last week I had the unwanted notifications on shared cameras problem and now this.

Yes … I examined the SD card when I first got the cameras to see if I could pull the video files if I ever needed to provide video evidence to police and saw all the 1 minute files … I decided that the better option was to use my phone’s screen recorder.

I guess that “Continuous” SD card recording also records 1 minute segments and the App strings them together for playback. That way when the card gets full it can overwrite the oldest 1 minute segments.

Probably standard video process/file management for security cameras, dash cams, etc.

Yup, it also ensures that if your camera loses power you only lose at most 1 minute. It would also be basically impossible for a device like this to record, play, and navigate a single massive video file.

Yeah, my dash cams do 30 second clips, and if they detect a shock (crash, hard braking, etc) they start saving 15 second clips to a separate folder that can’t overwrite, I think most of them do the same model. Small battery or supercapacitor makes sure it can finish writing whatever file is in progress if they lose power.

I spoke too soon … problem is back on 2 of 4 OG cameras.

I’ll keep monitoring and flag “Solution” when all 4 cameras are working.

WYZE is clearly jacking with something on the back-end to cause things to start and stop functioning as they should. WYZE is not well known for transparency, so I highly doubt we’ll ever know the root cause.

I have no luck with 3 of my OG cameras. I check off all 6 of the categories on the record line where what looks like a wine glass and it changes to green but each time I exit the camera they are all unchecked.

I was waiting for a WYZE back-end fix … but maybe if 2 of 4 cameras were working then the WYZE back-end was working and problem was in camera to WYZE communication.

So I Factory Reset 1 of the cameras:

  • Did not fix the problem.
  • Seemed to generate a new problem - the red Record light stayed on for only 6 sec vs the expected 12!

Restart Camera and Reset Services had previously not fixed the problem.
However, out of frustration, I ran Restart Camera and Reset Services on this camera.
When I checked again the camera was back to expected “5 minute cooldown” behavior and the red Record light stayed on for 12 sec.

My networks all have high-latency - Wi-Fi is slightly better:

  • Android phone 5G/5G+ mobile network Ping 30ms
  • iPad Wi-Fi LTE Internet Ping 20ms.

Previously, I was running Reset Services on my Android phone which I don’t connect to Wi-Fi at this location so it used 5G/5G+ mobile network.

This time I had run Reset Services on my iPad which is connected to Wi-Fi with slightly better latency than 5G/5G+.

For the 1 remaining OG with issues I tried:

  • Android phone (5G/5G+ Ping 30ms) Reset Services - did not fix.
  • iPad (Wi-Fi LTE Ping 20ms) Reset Services - Fixed - appears to be my solution.

It’s been 6 days and all 4 cameras appear to be working with expected “5 minute cooldown” behavior.

I’m putting this experience down to WYZE ongoing issues with devices on high-latency networks.

  • I was never able to run the WYZE Thermostat at this location due to high-latency causing “Device Offline” status. It’s running fine at my city home with Fibre 7ms latency.
  • I recall another post where user could not install the new OG that required a mandatory firmware update during setup - the firmware update kept failing and the network was high latency. User’s solution was to install at another location with low-latency network to complete mandatory firmware update, then factory reset and install at the original location.

I expect this is a low priority item for WYZE - I’d guess 90%+ customers are in urban areas with low-latency internet and <10% are like me in rural areas with high-latency internet.
