Yard Cat ----- Not Camera Shy

Yard Cat ----- Not Camera Shy

I feed yard cats, over this past brutal winter

They stop by, under our covered patio furniture, to eat.

This one cat that runs up to the camera, and looks right into the camera,

It has Amazed me.

Other regular visitor cats, have also learned someone is behind the camera,

as they also have a tendency to look into the camera.

Animals are smarter then we think!

I have feral cats and raccoons that do the same. :+1: Especially when IR is on at night. They’ll just stare at the cams like, FEED ME! If that doesn’t work, they crawl up on the window sills and stare at us in the living room.

Too funny, they sit there, and look at you in your living room?

:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

It’s their version of watching TV

Or version of going to the zoo

Some just stare at us until we go outside and feed them. Some sit on the sill or stand and watch TV like this one:

Strangely, I had the opposite kind of winter this year. Where I live (high in the mountains) we usually get around 5 feet of snow each winter and have to shovel snow about 20 different days. This year, I only had to shovel snow 1 single day (and the rest melted soon anyway). It’s been insanely warm for the winter without snow. It’s like we exported it all to the southeast this year. You’re all welcome. It was actually kind of nice to finally have a winter without an absurd amount of snow and cold. My cats loved it and voluntarily stayed outside most of the winter for once instead of lounging around inside. My animals (and me) all agree that the rest of you are welcome to keep all the snowy winters from now on. but we’d like a little more rain (and snow in the mountain peaks) to make up for it so we aren’t panicking about drought next time.

5 Feet of SNOW a year !

And shovel 20 different days…..Holy cow

Here in NJ, we had 2 bad snow storms, which end up leaving 5-7 ft “front of house” snow shoveled piles…. 2 big storms within weeks, I had to shovel at least 6 times between the storms…on top of shoveling for 2 other homeowners. ( Where I live, population density is high, which also means no place to put the volume of snow once we start reaching 12+ inches, last storm we had 22–24 inches around the area)

To me, it sounds like you were able to have a “Winter Off” season, I would be very skeptical the No snow, is a long term trend, and more of a “once off”….Mother nature has a tendency to swing extreme one direction, and then eventually swing back to the extreme in the other direction. To equal things out,….Meaning you could see extreme snow next season….

If our snow storms here in NJ, were due to you not receiving snow.

Mother nature, please send back to Sender….

:joy:

What do you do with the cats, when you DO have 5 ft of snow

Are they house cats, or feral cats?

The feral cats ( at peak 7 cats showed up during the 2 snow storms time frame, along with 2 skunks, 1 raccoon, that I have seen from the Wyze cam…Could be more, not sure did go through all the footage…..

It was brutal for them….sleeping at night under the patio furniture, and it was -10 to -20 degrees quite a few days… Don’t know how they do it

Yeah, don’t get me wrong, we’ve had as much as 2 and 1/2 ft in a day just a couple of years ago, and just north of me where I went to school, they got over 11 ft of snow that year (winters are brutal up there sometimes). So sometimes winter sucks around here  I’m just glad we had an off year. I didn’t even have to pull out my snow blower.

They say climate change will cause some places to get warmer than they have historically, been, while other places get a lot colder than they have historically been, and I just want to volunteer for my area to be one of the ones that get a lot warmer than they have historically been  while others balance the average change out by taking on more cold and snow that we don’t get anymore. So you have my gratitude for taking one for the team this year

My cats are spoiled:

  • They have a cat door in my daughter’s window where they can go inside and outside at their discretion (we only lock them inside on Halloween and sometimes 4th of July to protect them from people who get carried away on these days…) though they still beg us to let them in and out of the doors sometimes (mostly because they like to kitty-guard the cat door and playfully stalk and swat each other as they go in and out of it.)
  • They also have a space heater in my daughter’s room that they like to lay near and can be as warm or cool as they want anytime.
  • They also have unlimited dry food in a food dispenser that lasts for weeks or months before I have to refill it (none overeat because they know they have unlimited food)
  • They also have unlimited automatic water, which is connected up to a hose that automatically refills it.
  • They also have two automatic cat litter robots that automatically clean their litter and keep it smelling fresh. I only have to empty it once every few weeks at most.
  • They have plenty of soft beds and we give them treats, and catnip, and love

So basically, they do whatever they want whenever they want. They are spoiled. If it’s snowy or rainy or windy, they just choose to stay in their spoiled indoor palace until it clears up. 80% of their time outside is just spent sitting on the front porch watching life go by.

So most are house cats. One was feral (or stray), but we adopted him and he’s totally a house cat now. We sometimes have feral visitors, but our adopted feral/stray is kind of territorial and even though he’s a clumsy runt he will even stand up to dogs, and get in screaming growling matches with the other strays, so we don’t see them as much anymore.

One thing you could potentially do for your strays sometimes as a treat when it’s brutal weather is make them sodium-free beef/chicken broth. It will help them warm up and stay hydrated and they love it.

11 FT OF SNOW !!!

Holy Holy Cow!

Just north of you

That’s not a snow storm, that’s an Ice age event.

I have to be brief on my reply, due to dinner.

I do believe there is an effect of climate change since we do have over 8 Billion people and counting on the planet, that are doing all different types of things that affect the environment.

In 1900 we had 1.6 billion people,

126 years later, we quadrupled that number

There is a limit on how much the fish bowl we live in, on, can handle….

WOW, on the cat care..

You and your family supplied the cats with everything they need, so much so, they don’t need humans anymore, Automatic litter boxes, water dispensers, food dispensers :joy:

Control of the house

Note: Prior to Halloween I had adopted 2 black cats 12+ years ago, because many people are superstitious, and wont adopt black cats, others that do want black cats, some use them for very bad things….. You are right to protect the cats around halloween, and these days , overall….One of the yard cats I have around “Brutus” he has taken more damage/injuries that I have ever seen a cat take in my feral cat support life..( over 15 yrs) he has had leg injuries, 3 times, facial injuries 3-4 times, missing teeth….I believe someone or more than one, is causing this, throwing rocks at him or something, cats dont get injured so many times, they are not prone to being injured so many times….Brutus is not the first cat I have had my suspicions that cats around the area are being harmed…So you are right, to protect them as much as possible…

  • Be very careful with space heaters, most fires start from space heaters in the winter
  • Do not feed cats more than 50% dry per day… reason being too much dry food, can cause crystallization in the urinary track. Which can/will either kill the cat/s or cause major health problems over time…. I had gone through this years ago, too much dry food problem…..Also canned food, always add a bit of water….for many health reasons, as many canned food do not have enough moisture in the food, and the cats digestive track and bowels are affected…Sign of it, dark stool, black looking dried out…

“““““ So basically, they do whatever they want whenever they want. ““““““““

Just keep them away from the checkbooks and bank accounts. :joy:

And always have the house keys on you, when you leave them in the house alone

You just may come home one day, and they locked you out.

:rofl::rofl:

Gotta go, Dinner!

Just finished eating

So I can try to finish were we left off.

In regards to the snow and your words

“““ So you have my gratitude for taking one for the team this year  “““

In regards to the excessive snow, and taking one for “The team” in regards to snowfall.

I am sorry, I never knew I was on this team,

I want out ! :joy:

In reply to your words regarding the feral cats that come by…

““““““ One thing you could potentially do for your strays sometimes as a treat when it’s brutal weather is make them sodium-free beef/chicken broth. It will help them warm up and stay hydrated and they love it. ““““

Oh, I do feed them well.. not just can food or dry food, but also any type of excess meat we dont eat at dinner, I also buy ( very cheap to do, and very healthy for the cats - even dogs) Buy a pack of chicken legs,I boil them, a few at a time, and give them the meat, and boiled water that is now basically chicken soup to them. It goes fast…….Cost for a 10 pk of chicken legs on sale about $4.80 and it is the best food you can feed them…. I give it to them a 4-5+ times a month, t balance things out,…Its the best thing a pet owner can do for their own cats….cheap, natural, and better than canned food in many ways, that is more expensive.

Note: The birds in the yard, also like the cat dry food…they eat it often too.

Who would have thunk!

Neat! Is the light on? Maybe she can see it.

We had a dog that would pose for pictures. I guess she’d see us posing and do the same.

There was no light on, in fact many of the animals, cats, raccoons, skunks that pass through, and have a tendency to look into the camera.

The video of the 1 raccoon above, was during the day, and then he/she just walked over up to the camera.

They know someone is behind the camera somehow, just not sure how…

Dogs are smart too!

In fact I believe most animals are, we ( humans) have a tendency to think otherwise. because we don’t understand it, or not all of us see the “smarts” animal have.

Here is another one, Raccoon, In this case I believe he sees the infrared lights….

When I was in high school we had a beagle and two cats, one a calico. The calico managed to open a bottom cabinet that was blocked by a gallon of bleach. Cat moved the bleach enough that the dog could get her paw in the door, then opened it fully. Cat then went in and got Tender Vittles, moist cat treats. Cat then chewed corner of the box until the dog could get a tooth in it, then dog held the box down with her paw and ripped the box open. There were some foil packets, cat chewed a corner again until the dog could get a tooth in it, then dog held the packet down with her paw and ripped the packet open, sending cat treats all over the kitchen. Then they feasted.

Don’t tell me dogs and cats can’t reason. There must have been 20 boxes in that cabinet and the cat brought out the right one on the first try. This was in the 1970s, so no video.

 Thats amazing….They teamed up, and conquered.

That’s a perfect example how smart they are…Dogs & Cats, and I believe most animals are much smarter than humans give them credit for

One of the best cats/ super smart, and very talkative, closest bond, I have ever had with to a cat, (Mentally & verbally connected) and I have had many cats over the years.

I lost him back in Nov 3rd 2024

But here is a video

I had to shorten the video in order to upload,

He’s not very good “office help” though
