Wyze Thermostat - Smart home heating & cooling

Price has not been determined, we want to make it affordable but the hardware durability is very important due to the long life cycle of a thermostat.

Will the thermostat work without c wire. Do you have the extra kit for houses that don’t have c wire.

Glad to see a thermostat coming.
Important features:
1: Remote adjustment of temperature, shutting furnace off, turning fan on, etc.
2: Reading of temperature via app
3: Preferably even logging of temperature
4: Logging of run-time (day/week/month) as this is really the only way to keep down heating cooling/costs,. To run the furnace as little as possible. That might sound strange, but furnace really does not care if outside is 33F or 45F. The “cost per hour” is the same (as long as a single stage furnace, which is what most have. I have a two stage furnace, but 2nd stage has never been needed even in sub zero temps).
I’ve tracked furnace run time since 2009, I log it monthly, and I have managed to consistently via a “non-smart” thermostat to reduce hours run every heating season (turning temp down when leaving house, when going to sleep, etc, even turning off completely if gone for a longer time).

Nest and other "smart thermostats does not have a leg up on me, as they will run furnace more (hours) to try to keep “comfort”. A modern furnace is often grossly overdimensioned, so even if house is cold when coming home, turn on the furnace and the perception of warmth is there quickly (even if the real temp takes a while to climb as we heat up mass in the form furniture, walls, etc).

Hence, focus less on the “smart” features, but more on “control” as most often the smart features actually do not lead to a reduction in cost (it is just a marketing gimmick).

Looking forward to what might be released.

Are you guys also implementing the following features in the Thermostat:

  1. Damper control to allow for fresh air including timer for that control (30 min, 60 mins, …etc)
  2. Temperature hold feature (hold for 30 min, 60 mins, …etc, and then go back to the previous temp.)

I would love to have a temperature sensor that connects to the smart thermostat that I could then log the temperature in that room. So I know if I need to open the registers more or less. It would be great to have the system adjust the registers automatically but just some logging in different rooms would be awesome.

@superchi Will I be able to log with it? I would also love to see when my blower and furnace or AC is on… If I have someones ear I just want my wishes and dreams know…

I would love to see a thermostat that doesn’t require a C wire. Even if I have to recharge or change batteries on the unit. Or the ability to choose between a C wire or Battery for power would be awesome. This would be more helpful for Renters that don’t have access to the furnace or their landlord wants their tenant to be minimally invasive when adding smart home devices.

Can I become a tester … As I am about to buy a new thermostat either Honeywell or Nest. If your product works then I will buy yours.

I thought they just started the alpha testing? Either way, hopefully it comes out sometime this year.

Do we know yet if this thermostat will support Two Stage Furnaces?

That is incorrect. Any electronically controlled thermostat without a battery requires a voltage supply. AKA the C wire. I would bet money an adapter will be shipped with the thermostat.

Does anyone know if the thermostat will work with a Heat Pump with a variable speed fan? I’ve looked for this feature in other thermostats and they did not have it. They control the heat pump, but they run the fan at one speed only. Thanks.

HVAC professional here, 20yrs experience including system design and controls.

I just found out about the wyze tstat and would love to test one/assist where possible.

I believe the correct answer to “will it work with a variable speed fan” is actually MAYBE. It depends on the type of system you currently have. If it is a “legacy” system (analog switching, 24v, relays, etc) it should work just fine as your current tstat does. If it is a communicating system (1’s and 0’s data on the wire) it’s not gonna work period.

Some systems also have a “dhum” terminal to control the fan speed during a cooling call based upon the RH% reported by the tstat AND some tstats allow for RH% control by intentionally overcooling beyond the temp setpoint.

With the exception of communicating systems, I’ve not run across a residential system where the variable speed fan is controlled by the thermostat other than “On, Auto, Circulate” and dhum mentioned above.

Also, just because your blower motor speeds up/down does not mean it’s a variable speed motor. A true variable speed motor can go from 0-100% and anywhere in between. There’s actually a processor that drives this function. There are constant CFM/torque motors that typically have 5 predetermined CFM settings. They too ramp up slowly and will adjust their speed for deviations in airflow such as dirty filters (they’ll run faster to maintain CFM). Both types are ECM motors (electronically commutated instead of the old school split capacitor motors). Yes, it’s a bit confusing at times as they both look very similar with a module hanging off the back of the motor.
