Only if it can talk to the “Wyze Refrigerator”
I received my Wyze Scale Ultra 11-1-24. Amazon had 1 day delivery.
1st impressions:
Packaging was top of the line. It was glossy, multiple colors, attractive. On opening the scale is enclosed in a custom foam enclosure. Well protected. Included in package were the scale, batteries and quick start guide.
Initial setup was seamless. Within seconds the app found the scale and I was presented with my wifi choices. Once again it only took seconds to configure the wifi. It took longer to unbox the scale and insert the batteries than it took to setup the scale.
In use operation.
Stepping on the scale. Within a second or so the scale comes alive and begins showing weight. It stabilizes within 5 seconds or so then shows the other parameters (which I don’t care about)
What the app shows. The app gets the scale data almost immediately. This compared to my original WHSCL1, that may take a few seconds (bluetooth).
New features. When selecting the scale configuration the 1st item is new to my wyze cameras. “Reset wifi”. You are allowed to change the wifi SSID. This is a nice addition to the feature set.
There are also new additions to the “Device Info” screen.
My belief is Wyze it looking seriously at connection issues. The added parameters should help immensely when trouble shooting. Question to early Doorbell Duo users. Are you seeing the same new parameters for signal strength, network latency and wifi reset?
Accuracy:
It passes. My WHSCL1 and Wyze Scale Ultra are within 2 tenths of a lb of each other.
Stepping on the new scale repeatedly I saw about 3 tenths of a pound variation.
Caveats:
There are a few rough edges.
You get to chose your avatar. The UI is a bit confusing. You are given a choice of a wyze avatar or a selection of 10 or so other avatars. The screen is a bit confusing as I found it will only show your initials if the wyze avatar is selected. Probably makes their job easier as they don’t have to worry about your initials not showing.
I am speculating on this one. I believe the scale determines who is on the scale by weight or if the app is open whose profile is selected. I added a second user and the app wasn’t happy. It complained that someone else had the same weight and I needed to correct that. Then the second user seemed limited to what screens were displayed. I deleted the second user and everything went back to normal. Hmmm. Save this one for further testing. There is an option in the app that will only allow the scale to update if the app is open to the selected user.
Someone on the forum asked about Automations. I did a cursory look and could find none for the scale.
In the app, at highest level, there is a selection for Account > Firmware Update. In this screen there is no listing for the new scale. I have checked multiple times–nada. I’ll save this for a later date.
Conclusion:
I am pleased with what I am seeing, especially the wifi reset, the added wifi parameters, the ease of installation, the accuracy.
Now for the impossible. The pet detection wants me to hold my 80lb pity and step on the scale. Not going to happen🤗.
More to come at a later date.
Hopefully this is a sign of things they will adding to their products going forward! People have been requesting this.
WOW! I am actually really surprised it’s that close! Most smart scales have a tolerance range that sees to be more than that. I’m actually fairly impressed it’s so close.
That is correct.
@WyzeJasonJ I don’t know if the Product Manager is willing to answer some questions or not, but if so, this is what I would ask them:
- Will Google Fit also get updated with the WiFi option on the new Scale Ultra, or only when the app is open?
- On the Scale Ultra, how does the app know or choose which user profile to upload weight measurements to Google Fit (if you have multiple users on the same account for the scale, including spouse, kids, baby, or even pets)?
- Will you ever consider an integration with something like Health Sync so that we can upload more Body measurements other than just our weight to other apps like uploading our Body fat measurements to Google Fit or other apps?
- How much does the large screen and WiFi affect the battery life in comparison to your previous scales? Will it be possible to disable most of the screen to better preserve battery life?
- Now that it connects through WiFi, would you consider adding any kind of Automation rule triggers with the smart scale? For example, when the scales takes a weight measurement, it could trigger a morning or bedtime routine such as we could have that trigger to turn on certain lights and plugs as we get ready for the day. At night it could dim or turn off certain lights because that is someone’s bedtime routine, maybe arm the HMS/Cam Protect or turn cameras on to start recording while we go to sleep, etc.
- Would you consider allowing notifications from the Scale? One benefit of this is that it would give tinkerers the ability to do custom automations based on the notification to integrate it with other things like Home Assistant to do morning or night routines or automatically log that data in a spreadsheet to import into another health tracking system. You wouldn’t even have to do much programming outside of allowing a notification option and people would have the ability to use it for automations.
- To Wyze In General: Why did you choose to launch another scale as your first non-camera-related product in a couple of years vs other potential options?
- I have long been interested in a smart scale that includes hand electrodes (a hand bar) in addition to the foot electrodes on the scale. Will you ever consider launching a dual approach adding hand electrodes in a pro line for a more comprehensive measurement of body composition that is likely more accurate as it captures data from different parts of the body and more useful for estimating body fat and muscle mass?
It’s okay if they don’t answer all of the questions, but if Wyze held an AMA about this new product launch like they often do about new Products, those are probably the things I would ask the PM in an AMA. Though I understand you guys already did a very recent AMA, so I will understand not doing another one so soon already.
Either way, I’ll get and use one of these. I like the idea of not having to open my app every time I want to weigh myself. The WiFi feature is a nice addition.
Sounds like my house
Is this a necessary step because of the Google Fit integration? I don’t use that but for a long time was in the habit of opening the app every time I weighed myself until I learned in the Forum that Scale S will retain some history in between open-app Bluetooth syncs, so now I do that about once a week when weighing , and that’s enough to sufficiently catch up the app with the scale.
That and I think I found on at least one of the scales that it would only record other body measurements besides weight if it was open. I can’t remember for sure, but there were multiple reasons I needed it open on the phone during weigh-ins. I am hoping the Wi-Fi option will solve most of that.
This is probably because it’s using bluetooth to maintain connection to the device while the ssid is being changed. This should be possible for the other camera models with bluetooth.
Your spot on.
Screen shot with Bluetooth turned off.
Screenshot with Bluetooth turned on.
I guess Wyze’s move from QR codes to Bluetooth for initial configuration has an added benifit.
Even for the ones that use a QR code, they could probably just program the cameras to still recognize QR codes (like what happens with the garage door opener. V3s) so that when they see a certain kind of QR code that includes a new SSID and password with some kind of trigger code included in the QR code that it will just update to the new Wi-Fi. Maybe as a safety measure, they would have to include something like the SSID and correct password of the previous Wi-Fi to prove it’s you, then include the new one. So it would only update if it sees both. Then people would be able to update their QR code using cameras even if they’re not online because the old Wi-Fi is no longer connected. I’m sure there’s lots of potential solutions without needing Bluetooth. Although, Bluetooth is obviously an easy way to do it. However, I think the problem is that the cameras only broadcast Bluetooth during setup. So, for those people who don’t have the old Wi-Fi running still when they want to make the change, it would still require people pull out a ladder climb up and press the setup button to make the camera start broadcasting Bluetooth. Which is basically the same as making them go through setup again, which is what people are complaining about. They need a solution that doesn’t require you to press a button on the device to change the Wi-Fi. I actually think the QR code option To change Wi-Fi could work reasonably well.
I imagine something like this would require a firmware update, but this seems like a really clever way to do it!
I like the “safety measure” idea, too. I imagine without something like that someone could walk up to an exterior camera (on someone’s home, for instance), press the SETUP button, show the camera a new QR code, and then hijack that camera onto a mobile hotspot.
That doesn’t really solve the problem of migrating other things (thinking here specifically of lighting products) to a new SSID, but it seems like a good idea that would be doable for cameras.
Steering back to the topic:
I was half-joking when I suggested that earlier, and I’m actually not surprised that options for Automations don’t currently appear to exist, but I can definitely see legitimate use cases for adding that capability to Scale Ultra, especially since it connects via Wi-Fi. Something like…
- IF
- Wyze Scale Ultra
- [user’s] weight ≤ [user’s predetermined goal weight]
- Wyze Scale Ultra
- DO
- Whole House Wyze Bulb Color Group
- Color Blink [random party lights colors]
- Whole House Wyze Light Strip Pro Group
- Color Blink [random party lights colors]
- Wyze Wi-Fi Chime
- [play congratulatory horn fanfare]
- Whole House Wyze Bulb Color Group
With something like that, though, I do wonder how quickly and consistently something like this (using replaceable batteries, so I imagine it spends most of its time sleeping and offline in order to conserve power) establishes a Wi-Fi connection and is ready to send data when activated with a step. I don’t have any experience with Wyze’s battery-powered camera products, though, so maybe that problem has already been solved. (I’m also thinking about how one cat in particular likes to walk across and sit on my Scale S, so he frequently turns it on, but I don’t have any battery life complaints, so maybe that’s not an issue.)
I still see the ladder in play so you can read the QR code.
Bluetooth is enticing and maybe in the future it can be used as the scale is using it.
I’m thinking through if another TCP/IP session (maybe different protocol) could be instituted. One session for current and one session for new.
I don’t know enough about the SOC’s being used if this is possible.
Food for thought.
Excellent review. I am not interested in purchasing a smart scale, but your extensive review keeps the option open, in my mind.
Changing Wifi is a major implementation. Hopefully that will solve that issue for those complainers.
Too bad both you and your wife can’t weigh the same.
I guess you would have to pickup young children to weigh them as well?
Otherwise, nice features.
Not sure what the minimum weight is but following screenshot shows what is available in the app.
There is also a selection in another screen called "pregnancy mode. It only tracks weight. I’m speculating that when pregnant the other data is invalid.
Very interesting. Thanks.
Yeah, though, the person still wouldn’t have the Wyze account username and passcode, so it should still only work for the owner (in theory), but it’s still best to be cautious when dealing with something like this. So making someone verify they already had access to the previous network (knew the ssid/pw) should mean the person already had approved network access to the camera anyway, so there is no added threat moving it. I didn’t want to have the QR code. Use the wyze account username and password, because I didn’t think that should be in a QR code somewhere exposing their password. So the previous SSID name and password was the next best thing I could think of as a security measure.
How about this one?
- Trigger: new weight is greater than the previous recorded weight
- Action: Flash all color bulbs red and turn on the siren. Then have Alexa announce a custom warning.
J/K. I was more thinking along the lines of morning and bedtime routines involving lights and plugs.
I guess I was thinking more in terms of a bad-actor-factory-reset-camera-hijack situation, but at that point the miscreant would probably be more likely to just steal the camera anyway. I still like the thought that went into an additional security step.
That’s kinda like my original proposal.
That’s the reasoning given for this feature in Scale S:
By default, Wyze Scale S sends a weak (and safe) electric current through the body to measure Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). There are no known risks to calculating BIA while pregnant, but body composition results will not be accurate.
Working with electronics, I found electricity and water a bad mix but definitely a good conductor.
I found they love each other immensely.
They seems to fight me when I come in between them.
