I have a location where the is no router but there is a connection via a WIFI Hotspot. I can control power via a computer there that connects via Any Desk or Teamviewer but I have no way to control power on the computer as it has to be running to use Any Desk or TV. I need a way to turn the computer on and off but most devices require port forwarding which is not available through a cell phone Hotspot. Can the Wyze connect via a cellphone Hotspot? Not sure if I am posting this question in the correct forum. Thanks
Welcome to the community @K4PI
Although I don’t have a hotspot setup to validate this with, I have tested hot spots with other devices over the years without issues. As long as you have the SSID, Password, and can connect to the internet, you should be ok.
I will remove one of my Test Plugs and see about setting it up via a Hotspot from a phone I have. Will not be able to get to this until later today.
EDIT
I just tested this for you. First, it does work without issues. When you set it up, the device you are using needs to be connected to the Hot Spot or MiFi. Then you can start the app and connect a new device, select plug from the list and it did connect. I was able to turn it on and off as expected.
Great this would really help me out. During thunderstorms I would like to be able to disconnect the computer from the power source by using the Wyze to turn off a contactor. And then after a storm turn the computer back on. I have a Digital Loggers addressable power controller there but it requires port forwarding via a router. Once I have the computer running I can use the Digital Logger to power equipment back on. I have no way of having a router there as there is no direct internet, only a cell phone connected to a cell tower and using internet hotspot.
That should work, make sure your MiFi and / Or Hot Spot allows for auto connections then.
My computer does an auto connect to the hotspot so hopefully the Wyze Plug would do the same thing. Guess I will have to order one and find out if it works.
I am sure you have been busy since it is New Years but hope you will get a chance sometime to test out the situation of using a cellphone as a Hotspot to connect to a Wyze Power Plug. Thanks, Mike
I apologize for not adding a new post, I updated the one where I said I would test for you. I tested the same day.
here is what I said:

I really appreciate that. I was expecting an email, sorry. I read something in the Wyze setup today that totally confuses me but glad it worked for you. Can you explain the additional note they give right after their online setup of the plug. Totally confusing to me. I will be using an Android cell as the Hotspot to the internet. If I turn off mobile data I have no internet. Is your unit the Classic wifi or the new 2021 bluetooth? Thanks
Additional Notes:- Android**, Samsung users:**
- When connecting to the Wyze Plug’s network, be sure to stay connected to the WiFi network when prompted that the network doesn’t have an internet connection, instead of switching to mobile data. If you switch to mobile data, the setup process will stop.
With the Classic Plug, I ran into an issue where it would go through the process, find the plug and connect to it then do the setup. However, Android recognizes that there is no internet and then switches back to the default WiFi or Cell and then the connection fails. So, I believe what they are saying is, when you are prompted to stay connected select yes - you will be prompted from Android.
NOTE: Once it is setup, you won’t see that notice, it is only during setup.
I have set both up the new 2021 version (which I like a lot better) and the older original ones.
Since you indicated that the your Hot Spot, stays on, you should be ok.
Good deal !! I will order one and see how far I can get HI… I find their additional note totally confusing. I really appreciate you helping me move forward on this. I definitely want the 2021 model so there is one less Wifi signal at the site. I will let you know how things progress. Not an IT guy so just have to pick my way through things. Mike
Please understand that I am a community member as you. I don’t work for Wyze.
My testing was with a Pixel 6 connected to a hot spot.
R R but it was go enough make me buy one to try out. We will find out how it goes. I see now it says that the bluetooth is just used during the setup and USB after that. Many thanks for the help. Mike
My Pleasure.
