Wyze Cam v4 Keeps Going Offline

For context, I have a single v2 and three v3’s and they work flawlessly, yet, my v4 goes offline and I have to unplug it, plug it back in and it’s good for about 3-5 days before it does it all over again. It’s not a connection issue as it’s the closest to my router. Any advice as to what’s going on?

What I would try:

  • Reset the camera to factory settings, go through setup again. Sometimes this fixes weird issues such as a firmware update that didn’t fully resolve for some reason. I have had this happen to a couple of cameras and a factory reset restored everything to normal functionality again.
  • Go into your router and give that camera a Fixed, static IP address that is reserved for it. This prevents other devices from ever trying to use the same IP address and causing conflicts that keep knocking certain devices offline. I have actually had this exact problem, and setting a static, reserved local IP address for the device that kept going offline fixed the issue entirely. I actually had to do this a couple of weeks ago because I had a device from another company that kept trying to force itself to use an IP address that was already being used, and the router was allowing it to keep trying to do that (and I have a pretty higher end router system with Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Machine Special Edition with 4 U7Pro AP’s, so it can happen with even some of the best routers), and so I reserved the IP address to force the router to help stop allowing such conflict requests. It totally solved the issue I was having.
  • Lastly, I would consider contacting support. It is possible there is a defect with the WiFi chip in that V4 for some reason, and after some standard troubleshooting, Wyze will almost definitely replace it for you, assuming you’re still within the warranty period, etc.

Those would be things I would recommend looking into or trying if it were happening to me.

Well, it could be dozens of things that contribute to the issue. You’ve not given us much information to work with. You are asking us to do your homework. Like:
What have you tried?
How far is the problem camera away from your router. Is it pushing the envelope of distance?
Have you swapped this camera to one of the locations where the other cameras are to see if the issue follows the camera or its the location. It could be close to the router, but the signal could be blocked.
Have you swapped the power adapter with one of your others? Many of us don’t use the Wyze adapter. We believe the 1.0 amp adapters are marginal. Frankly, you should pitch the one you are using with the V4 and use Prime Days to pickup some 2.3 multiple port adapters.
What is the distance of the USB cable from the adapter to the camera? Too long or poor quality could be the cause. Just because it looks “okay” doesn’t mean it is. How do we fix that? Swap some of your stuff around an take note if it follows the camera or the accessories.

Those are some basic ideas to get you thinking. Many of us are not so trusting of not only the Wyze power adapter but also their WiFi plug. Which brings me to the next. Its not uncommon for Wyze cams to need a restart to get a fresh connection, as they often need it. We don’t know why, we just do it. And to save us trouble and cussing, we put them on a WiFi smart plug/adapter to restart the camera. Some of us use a WiFi adapter that locally stores the schedule and we can have the camera shutdown for 5-60 minutes a 3 a.m., and start back up on schedule. And daily, so we don’t have to worry.

Now, after you try these, and if it resolves the issue, you could come back and share. That’s the contribution to everyone that might have the same issue and how you solved yours helps everyone here.

Great clarifications. I especially should’ve mentioned these:

I do this exact thing for a lot of my cameras. I get more powerful adapters, especially if I am using a longer third party cord.

I used to have to restart my cameras regularly in the distant past. I rarely have that issue now. I think Wyze fixed most of the memory leak issues that the V2 cams used to have. Most of my cameras go months, or even more than a year without restarting except for when they get firmware updates (which always restarts them).

I have about 10 cameras in and around my house, had the same problem for a long time and I actually resolved it! Perhaps you’re having the same problem. It turns out my router had a limit of 25 simultaneous connections to my Wi-Fi. Of course I was at 26 or 27 between the 10 cameras the two laptops the two Apple TVs the two iPads Several lights and of course thermostat and a few other do hickeys.
I purchased the WYZE Wi-Fi six mesh routers, got two of them, spread them across my house and I have not had a disconnect problem since!
Don’t know what router you’re using but if it has a limited number of simultaneous connections that is the way it manifests itself.
Of course if the signal is less than two of three bars at your camera, that can cause the same problem.
Just a suggestion, hope it helps!

Around 2 dozen connections is a common limit on a lot of consumer grade WiFi devices. A few years ago, no one thought consumers would have dozens of WiFi devices. Little did everyone know that with smart homes it has become very easy to exceed that limit.
Note that most commercial WiFi devices will handle far more - as I recall my oldest enterprise grade access points can do either 256 or 512 simultaneous WiFi connections per AP.

I tried that when I bought a third-party extension USB cable that had way too much of a power drop on it. Especially for the pan cam three which has motors in typically draws more current at times. It was dropping like every minute. It was a nightmare!
I try a three amp power supply and even that wasn’t enough. I replaced the cheap imitation USB extension for a shorter one from WYZE, and a longer power extension cord. It’s been working flawlessly ever since!
That and the new router, of course.
(holy cow someone might think I worked for WYZE the way I’ve been talking )

I like this advice in general, and it’s something I did when I was having a similar problem with a Cam a few months ago: I would find that the camera was powered but offline with its status LED blinking red and blue. By swapping some things around and doing some additional testing, I was able to determine that the culprit was the Micro-B connector in the OEM cable and eventually bought a new third-party cable to replace it. That solved my problem, so I’m definitely on board with swapping your Cam v4’s cable with a known good cable (e.g., one from a camera that is operating as expected) as a troubleshooting measure.
