Wyze Cam OG useless

In buying the Wyze OG I was under the impression that I would be able to view the camera wirelessly from my laptop. It appears that is NOT possible. So I have been trying to pair it with my cell phone. No joy. I keep getting messages on my phone saying the pairing failed. No idea why. I suspect that this device will end up in a junk drawer with all the dead cell phones and useless electronics. I tend to agree with those who have posted that Wyze is a scam.

I have 5 OGs and all work great (for 2.5 years now).

Are you here to complain, or do you actually want some help?

Wyze are just Toy Cams and don’t work reliably even when all setup.

Watch out for the Defender of Wyze, whom says everything is fine. Just look around and you’ll see everything is not fine with Wyze……

There are Far Better cameras out there that are subscription free and they are actual security cameras

I tend to agree. Any suggestions on the far better cameras to which you refer?

I use and like Reolink 4k series of cameras, they are pricey for the 4k’s.

The 2k series is cheaper and closer to cost of Wyze cams, and actually cheaper if you count not having to pay a subscription to unhobble cams.

Eufy is another brand to consider also, other users here have had good luck with them.

I still use Wyze cams for Non-Security uses such as in the barn but never anything that requires reliability..

Note the 4k Reolink cameras will use more data if viewing in 4k as Reolink doesn’t compress the data like Wyze cams do. You do have the option to select lower data speeds however, which sometimes is needed when bandwidth is an issue ( usually when remotely accessing from a slow data cell tower, which is rare but does happen )

Reolink’s are far more flexible than Wyze too, NVR’s, RTSP, and many features real IP cameras provide.

Wyze is just a Subscription Trap

Thanks. I will check these out.

What additional detail can you share about your expectation and what you’ve tried so far? Given what you wrote in your original post, I can’t tell if you’ve managed to complete the initial in-app setup for your Cam OG, and that’s where you want to start.

It is possible to view Wyze Cams on PCs, and you can search the Forum to learn about different ways other community members do this. Unless you count something like Web View, though, there is no “native” app for most PC OSs. Knowing more about your goal and/or use case would be helpful in guiding any suggestions.

Up front, let me say that I am probably handicapped by having used computer-related stuff since the 1970s. In the 20+ years since I retired, a lot has changed. I’m constantly trying to do things that should be simple, but the directions state that I should open Settings, then click on some tab, then look for some button WHICH DOES NOT EXIST ON MY COMPUTER. This happens all the time in Windows and Chrome and most of the apps I try to use the way I want. Sometimes I can screw around with it and do what I want, but mostly I find (like installing this toy camera) that it is intentionally obtuse. I’ll probably just go the junk drawer route.

Thanks anyhow.

Just be aware that any wifi cam you buy from any brand is going to require you to set it up via an app using a phone or tablet.

If you want to get the OG working, it shouldn’t be too hard and people here can help you, but since a lot of people just come here to vent, there is no point in starting to help and writing out suggestions if someone isn’t interested.

I wouldn’t consider that history of computer use to be a “handicap”. Seems like “experience” to me. :+1:

Unfortunately, our experience with the way things used to work can sometimes cloud our expectations for how things work now, and the state of things now—with Wyze and many other companies—is products with app-based control, so a phone or tablet is the expected starting point and baseline control device.

If you can provide more specific detail about what you mean by this, then perhaps the community can suggest some guidance.

Why not return it if it’s a new purchase and you’re giving up on using it? The Help Center has a banner across the top with links to Wyze’s Returns Portal. You can also try posting to Watercooler to see if someone in the community wants it.

From my limited experience, all the consumer cam companies, like Wyze and Reolink, need a smart phone to first set up the cam. To view and/or manage/control the camera from a laptop requires a second step. So, first focus on installing the Wyze app on your smart phone, and connecting to your wireless router, To view your cam live/videos with Wyze on your laptop, you need Cam Plus, which I believe costs $19.99 per year for one camera.

With Reolink. First install the Reolink app on your smart phone, and connect to your wireless router, and get the camera working. Then download their free Windows Client to view and control the cam from the laptop.

Thank you for this very helpful comment.

I’m just weary of following instructions to the letter which do not align with the hardware and software in my possession. And it’s not just Wyze. I’m likely too old to adapt to the not-quite-applicable directions which now accompany almost all tech. I will just go back to using a trail cam and periodically retrieving the SD card to see who’s been on my property, which is what I did until my old one died. I was just trying to adjust to something a bit more convenient. Silly me.

I haven’t gone through setup in a while, but from my recollection the app runs you through it step by step and it has always been easy.

I would recommend making sure you are near the cam during the setup process (since it uses bluetooth for initial setup) and ideally disconnecting other bluetooth devices from your phone temporarily (but ensuring bluetooth is left enabled).

The error you mentioned sounds like a bluetooth one so try the above and you should get through it fine. Once the cam is set up, it doesn’t need bluetooth anymore (unless you want to change the wifi network in the future).

Some models such as the 4k trackmix cam be setup via a computer or with the app in a smartphone.

In fact everyone of my Reolink’s PTZ’s were setup using a PC and Not the app on a smartphone.

I’m was wondering if anyone else has had an issue with the Wyze cam OG not picking up sound or barely picking up sound and not picking up talking at all. Mine are for pets only. I have a pan V3 at my grandmother’s to keep an eye on my feral cats I take care of, and I have no complaints about it. I got the OG for my house to watch a semi feral cat and her kittens that come throughout the day but stay in my garage all night. I’ve done all the troubleshooting. It has listed a few times as well as turning the sound detection all the way to 100, making sure the volume is turned on when I’m watching the live feed or playing back clips and I only hear faint noises of them playing with the volume turned all the way up, but I’ve never received a notification saying sound detected. I may get a notification saying person detected when the car started, but if you watch the clip or live feed, you can’t hear the car running. I was able to use the 2 way microphone to talk to my sister and I heard her just fine and she could hear me but whether I’m talking/playing with a kitten or talking to another person it never picks it up. I’m a novice when it comes to cameras, like I said they are only for pets not security but my pan v3 gives me the option to select, cat meowing, dog, barking, glass, breaking, gunshots, and people talking. I don’t have all of those options on my og but it’s the same monthly plan and I have it selected to record sound. I may just have to return it and get a new one, but thought I would see if anyone else had the same issue and if there’s something I’m overlooking, that would be an easier fix than dealing with Amazon.

I don’t use sound detection other than for smoke and CO alarms (which I don’t think are affected by the sensitivity setting, at least they didn’t seem to when I was playing around with it).

When I first got them I did do a bit of testing and have found all the models of cams need a decent amount of sound to trigger a sound detection. I don’t think I noticed any major difference between the OG and Panv3 but I didn’t compare them directly.

I have noticed the mics tend to be very directional, my OG, v4, and Panv3 all can pick up sounds from across the street clearly but stuff below/next to the cams is very faint. When I do need to listen to sound I often turn the volume on my phone all the way up.

So perhaps changing the angle of the cam would help some, I’m assuming the sounds you want to hear/detect are down near the floor more?

It makes sense that they’d be directional and somewhat limited sensitivity due to the tiny hole the mic is behind. I’m guessing you don’t want to drill your camera but I wonder if flaring that hole with a drill bit and/or making it bigger would increase the mic sensitivity and reduce the directionality.

That’s a difference in the features because of the different Cam models, and they don’t all support “SMART SOUND” like Cam Pan v3 does.[1] If you want to be able to select recordings and notifications specifically for things like “Meowing” and “Glass Breaking” and use a stationary camera, then something like Cam v4 would allow you to do that with a subscription, and at times its price has been comparable to Cam OG’s.

Cam v4 is supposed to have improved audio capability over previous Wyze Cams, too. When I’ve done same-room comparisons with Cam v4 and Cam Pan v3, I’ve preferred the Cam v4 audio. It seems clearer (less tinny) and louder to me. I don’t know if that would allow you to have a better sound detection experience with your use case or not, but it might be something to consider.

  1. Personally, I’d like to see this feature on Bulb Cam, but that’s another matter. ↩︎
