I have a Wyze Cam OG Telephoto that I bought almost a year ago but never installed. I got it to replace a V3 camera for better distance detections/recordings. As I open the box and take a look at the camera I see it has a spotlight. I thought that the Telephoto version didn’t have a spotlight, even the box doesn’t mention a spotlight. There is no mention of a spotlight on the Wyze product page for it either. On the underside of the camera it says it’s a Telephoto 3x camera. On all the pictures for this camera that Wyze shows only one has it with a spotlight. Are they falsely advertising with their product pictures again? Either way, the camera I have has a spotlight built into it above the lens, but in the settings I don’t see a way to turn the spotlight on.
So after installing it the live view was find, but then resolution issues started happening, it got very grainy as if it’s not in HD when it’s set to that. And tapping the resolution icon on the upper left of the frame doesn’t seem to actually change anything. Then after rebooting the camera it has this green highlight in certain areas of the frame. I tried night vision mode and it started out good but then the resolution got worse. Putting night vision in Auto doesn’t seem to do anything, because it will stay in whatever mode I put it in prior. I’ve rebooted and unplugged the is camera numerous time and that doesn’t seem to fix things. This may have been downgrade to the V3.
I’m not at home so I can’t look at any of my OG-Tele cameras, but my recollection is that there is no spotlight on the OG-Tele. I can confirm that I can’t control a spotlight on any of the OG-Tele cameras via the app.
As far as the night capabilities, I normally have the two cameras shown below locked in daytime (color) mode. The two cameras are inside my front window sitting side by side. Looking at the two photos, the OG-Tele is a little darker than the V3. My neighbor’s front porch is 140 feet from the two cameras. In case you’re wondering, the large bright white blob just left of center in the V3 photo is one of the spotlights pointed at my flags - almost pointed at the camera.
Can you post picture of what this camera physically looks like on the outside?
The telephoto does not have a spotlight. Here’s a product photo showing both the OG standard and the OG telephoto. The telephoto is on top and does not have a spotlight but does have a sunken in camera lens compared to the standard which has a lens that is flush with the front of the camera.
I know the Telephoto is not supposed to have a spotlight camera but mine does. It looks just like the bottom camera in Omgitstony’s picture, except mine also has the purple ring around the black face.
Now that it is daylight out I can see a difference in the resolution between HD and 360P, but really don’t see a difference between HD and SD.
I found the page for the Telephoto on the Wzye site. This is the one picture they show of it with a Spotlight. So the must have screwed up showing this picture or it is supposed to be the two different cameras. This would be odd because the whole page was just about the Telephoto camera and there was no mention of the other OG camera.
The only thing I can think of is that maybe Wyze originally was going to sell the Telephoto with a spotlight and not sell the other wider field of view OG camera, but then changed their minds and decided on two separate cameras. Or they somehow mixed up the parts for my camera and it’s a Unicorn. Maybe a mod can find out. I’d like to see if there is a way I can get my Telephoto to be seen on the app as the OG camera, so I can get the spotlight to work.
Based on the lens on the one with the spotlight on, to me that looks like the OG standard and the one hanging upside down is a OG telephoto.
I would love to see a photo of this unicorn! I can see if I can find anything out.
Yes, I’m thinking Wyze put both the Telephoto and OG camera in that shot but shouldn’t have because as I said there was not mention of the OG camera anywhere on that product page.
As I keep saying, my camera has the spotlight like the Telephoto on the left in that picture but with the purple ring like the OG on the right. Do you actually need a picture to prove the validity of what I am saying? I know I should have taken a picture of it prior to mounting it up high, doh! Well, I’m not going to get the ladder out right now to get up there, maybe later on today.
Maybe the question is if you compare the image from the OG-Tele vs almost any other Wyze camera, it will be blatantly obvious if it is a Tele (see my comparison above).
I’m missing what your point is to anything I had said.
The point was - is the camera actually a Tele or not?
Ah okay. Well it appears it is a Telephoto camera and can see that it is optimized for the 3x zoom, while my V3 would just get fuzzier and fuzzier as I zoomed it in.
Here’s a picture of my Telephoto notice the purple circle around the black face. It could also be possible that this camera actually is the OG and not a Telephoto, even though the box and the sticker on the bottom of the camera say it’s a Telephoto and that the spotlight can’t be turned on. The field of view is definitely smaller than the V3 it replaced but not by much. Did someone run out of parts when they put this camera together or was new and screwed up?
I will say that this camera has been loading up faster in the new app with Live View on the Favorites page and doesn’t get hung up trying to load like my other cameras do.
The cam in your photo appears to be an OG with the OGT’s purple surround.
You could look at the Device Info > Device Model, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the app erroneously allows you to setup an actual OG as an OGT. Same for firmware version. Neither of these 2 are definitive.
As Omgitstony wrote, take a close look at the lens. The OG’s lens is up front and almost flush with the body. The OGT’s lens is significantly sunken/recessed into the body. OG on left - OGT on right:
The device model says it’s a Telephoto, but the lens is definitely more flush and I noticed it also has the lined rings around the lens, which is another thing the Telephoto doesn’t have. So what they did was put an OG internals in this housing and gave it the Telephoto software. Now I’m just pissed off, because this camera is a year old, was never taken out of the box but clearly outside the warranty, and I didn’t get what I paid for!
Yeah, I’d be seriously perturbed if I received that unicorn.
I’m not sure who to tag on this, so I’ll tag @WyzeMatt in here. I’m sure Wyze would love to find out how this happened.
Also… you said your cam is in a difficult to reach location, but if possible, look at the QR code on the bottom of the cam body. Above the QR code is the model number (not model name). It should read something like, “WYZECGT” or “WYZECGS”. Can you confirm?
I would appreciate any help I can get on this. The funny thing is the picture quality looks better zoomed in than my V3, but I didn’t think it as much better. That should have been my clue. A real Telephoto has to have better zoomed in quality.
Please see my edit in post above yours, re: model number.
To clarify, the telephoto is always 3x zoomed via the lens built into it, you should not have to do anything in the app to “zoom in”. It should have a much closer image than your V3 when both are at “no zoom” in the app.
If the image is 3x zoomed always, then my guess is you got a Telephoto but they put the OG lens cover on it so it will probably have issues focusing and looking right. If not, then you probably got a telephoto with the whole OG lens module in it (essentially making it an OG with probably non-functional spotlight).
In the thread I figured that out already. I think they put the wrong software in it and the wrong bottom sticker with the wrong box. But curious, there is no pinch to zoom farther with a Telephoto?
Zooming in the app is always digital. The telephoto does not have a motorized lens or anything like that. It is just always 3x zoomed in without having to use digital zoom. You should not have to do anything to get it to be 3x zoomed, it should just always be like that.
The OG image quality is clearer than the v3 in my experience, it sounds like you probably ended up with telephoto body but OG lens, some manufacturing mishap.
