Wyze Cam OG short event recording

I have a Wyze Cam OG pointing out of the side window of my house and each time an animal (cat, possum, raccoon) passes by, the event recording is only three seconds long. If a person or vehicle passes by, the recording is as long as the motion is in front of the camera. Why is this? My Wyze Cam 4 does not have this problem when an animal passes by. Is this a bug in the OG?

Your post reminds me of this issue:

As far as I know, that one still affects Cam OG events while the Cam is being viewed in the Web Portal, but I don’t recall seeing anyone mention an association of the 3-second recordings with Pet detections only. :man_shrugging:

This may work.

In event recording, select customize detections under recording preferences and deselect everything. somehow when the camera tries to ā€˜tag’ a video, all types of crap happens. Wyze is looking into this if related.

Thanks for your input. I’ll give it a try.

I thought there was something wrong with my Cam OG, but after switching it to a second Cam OG, I had the same problem. Don’t know why the OG has a problem with little animals.

There seem to be a few different issues going on with the OG and Smart Detections. Not sure why it would only be happening with animals in your case though, but the exact issue isn’t yet known.

Is it possible you just need to turn up your sensitivity since the object/animal is small and so the cam may only detect it for a short time? Enabling motion tagging (green box) may help determine if this is the problem or not.

I did have tagging turned on and the cat was recognized, but after three seconds, the recorded event stopped. I can see the entire motion event when I jump to the SD card, but it’s awkward scrolling through the timeline. This bug is obviously inherent to the OG since my v3 and v4 do not have this problem.

If the issue is similar with other owners of OG, then Wyze is aware of this. At one time they couldn’t figure it out and issued me a refund for 8 OG cams. A user discovered a workaround; however, this solution comes at the expense of the ability to filter by event type. I suspect it’s an issue related to their backend systems.

Yeah sounds like this is related to the ongoing issue then, that is one of the symptoms. Do you have an SD card? The issue seems to happen when all 3 of these are true:

You have cam plus/unlimited with cloud recording
You have an SD card in the cam
You have smart detections enabled (people/pet/vehicle etc)

The workarounds currently are:
Disable cam plus on the cam (cam unlimited can’t be disabled)
Disable smart detections, change to ā€œall motionā€ and disable everything except ā€œother motionā€ in the customize screen.
Remove the SD card (not 100% sure if this one has been confirmed)

All have their disadvantages obviously but one may be more acceptable than the others

Honestly, none of those disadvantages are acceptable. Looks like I made the mistake of buying the OG instead of a v3 or v4.

They’re temporary solutions while the fix is in the works, not suggesting they’re permanent. I like things about both the OG and v4, I have both in use and sort of wish the best of both could be combined. Can’t beat the price of the OG either especially when it was on sale for $10.

See below for update on the issue:

Another random bug, but forgot until I noticed it again yesterday: An event recording ā€˜hole.ā€ I was tracking a cat that was crossing my front yard (Cam v4) to the side (Cam OG) and when I tried to view the apparent time when the cat crossed the side using the SD card there was a dead spot (ā€œNo video available at this time.ā€). WTF??

Frustrating.

That’s actually the ā€œprimaryā€ issue, the cams seem to be crashing and rebooting which is causing both symptoms.

I’m still waiting for an update from Wyze. Seemed to have been working for half a day. It’s not the cameras, it’s a backend issue. The fix will either come as a backend fix or a firmware fix.
