Window glare

Anyone figure out a solid workaround for Wyze pan cam 3 window glare at night? When I use IR, it bounces off the glass and ruins visibility. But if I turn it off, it’s too dark to see anything. Kinda stuck—any fixes that actually work?

hmm, sounds like a job for a henway.

This topic looks like it belongs in the Cameras category with a cam-pan-v3 tag. It’s definitely not Power & Lighting or night-light, which is a different product. Changing the category and tags might improve the topic’s visibility in the Forum.

When I look in the app at Cam Pan v3’s  Settings ➜ Advanced Settings and tap the next to Night Vision IR Lights, the app recommends having these OFF when the camera is facing glass because of the exact issue you’re illustrating here. If doing that results in a picture that’s too dark, then your main option is to provide additional illumination on the other side of the window.

Your second screenshot gives the appearance that there’s some light out there. What happens if you set Night Vision Mode to Off? The Cam Pan v3s I’m using are indoors, and at night I use simple night lights (≤4 W) to provide illumination to that room, which is plenty for the starlight sensors. If you want “Color Night Vision” this way and the current ambient light isn’t giving you an adequate picture, then you’d need to augment the visible light outside the window.

If you want to keep using regular night vision (Night Vision Mode set to Auto or On), then you definitely want to toggle Night Vision IR Lights (OFF) and then use another source for IR illumination outside the window.

I use Wyze v3 cameras (non panning) inside double pane windows. What works for me is I have two 100 watt equivalent LED bulbs lighting up my driveway. My neighbors around me have bright lighting too.

I have Night Vision and IR lights set to Off. I also have my v3 cameras touching the inside of my windows while aimed outward.

I also have to keep the lights off at night in the rooms where my cameras are inside. My wife and I are Empty Nesters in a 4 bedroom house, so I placed my v3 cameras in rooms that are not used at night.

I get acceptable results for setup.

Oooook Crease…

Alright, look — yeah, it’s a Pan Cam v3, and the iPad iOS and android has nothing to do with my lighting situation. I tagged it under Power & Lighting because that’s exactly what it is — a lighting issue. Glare, IR bounce, whatever you wanna call it. Now if you’re talking night-light, cool, that’s the wrong product, I get that.

But this is a dark corner of the house. No sun, no outdoor outlet, nothing. That’s why I got the Pan Cam 3 to begin with — I didn’t know the IR would bounce back like that through the window.

And if I toggle night vision off it’s black, it’s just a really dark area of the yard trees a bush blocking the camera. If adding lighting outside is the only fix, guess I gotta start looking at solar maybe. I was seeing if maybe someone else found the solution to fix the glare. Just wasn’t tryna run power lines across the yard or run a new power line through the attic just to see what’s outside my own house.

Steven,
It’s just a super dark area of the yard, it’s behind a bush, that’s covered by trees on the side of house that has not outside power sources. I would have to run new power lines through the attic . But I’m renting and don’t want to spending that type of money.

I have a solar powered flood light in my backyard. You may be able to get some and stick them in the dirt to light up your area.

I’ll have to check it out by 1pm this side of the house is all shaded no direct sunlight and the camera is for behind the
The bush. And at night you can’t even see on that side of the house . I had some one try to break in recently. Which is the reasons for the cameras. I wish they had a 360 camera that I could just mount on that corner.

I didn’t say anything about the OS you’re using, so I’m not sure why you’d mention that. :man_shrugging:

I think there’s a misunderstanding. This is the description for the Power & Lighting category:

Has Wyze been lighting up your life? Do you feel empowered by us? Either way, please talk about Wyze lighting and power products here!

That would include things like Bulb, Bulb Color, Light Strip, Light Strip Pro, etc. You’re dealing with a camera issue. Your problem is related to an illumination feature of your camera—it’s the camera showing you problematic images because of the glare that the camera’s IR LEDs are producing from a reflection—so that’s a better category for it to get visibility and assistance from other users who want to help with camera issues. If you don’t want to recategorize your topic, then I’ll ask the Moderators to do that.

I think this is an excellent idea! Some stand-alone yard lights should have an effect similar to my use of night lights, and that should also allow you to set Night Vision Mode to Off so you can use “Color Night Vision”. Those can be relatively inexpensive and available in a number of configurations that could allow you to get creative and provide some better illumination to that area, and some additional lighting might serve as a break-in deterrent of sorts.

Since you mentioned mounting something—if you’re allowed to do that where you’re renting—then I’d also give some consideration to a solar-powered floodlight where you could mount the light to the soffit at the corner and have the solar panel collecting rays on a sunny portion of the roof. I had one of these mounted at my previous home that had a motion sensor and would light up the driveway in front of the garage whenever a car pulled in or person walked up.

Without a better idea of what you’re dealing with at that location, I’m not sure what else specifically to suggest, but I think some solar-powered options could really be helpful here.

Since you are renting, this may be a lighting solution for you.

Here is a link to buy the Spotlight or Floodlight.

BTW, I don’t have these but they look interesting for your situation.

Your best bet is to mount some IR lights outside the window perhaps these Amazon.com: DMetric IR Illuminator, AC 110V - 220V 850nm Infrared 96 LED Night Vision Waterproof Lamp for Indoor Outdoor Security CCTV Camera, Long Range 80m (263 feet) and Wide Angle 60 Degree : Electronics

Take a look at this. But wait until Prime Day in July Likely will be $119.

Unfortunately can’t change the laws of physics.

My backyard is pretty dark and covered with trees. I have few solar lights that get enough sunlight during the day that keep the light on pretty much most of the night. My camera is mounted outside, maybe you should try the same. I get decent quality of both night vision and colour vision.

I wish that was an option. I’m renting and have no power source near where I would have it mounted. And it would be more than 20’ . Because when you run wire and properly mounted and tucked properly that gets eating up fast.

I did see this, I’m gonna wait until Wyze drops their version so I have it all on one system. But hopefully when that happens I won’t be renting, I’ll have converted to a CCtV system.

Appreciate all the replies , I got some good info and have a good idea where I’m gonna go. Gonna try a couple of things and see which one works best.

I am running a cam V4 of a 40’ USB cable with no issues, mind you I have it on a 5V/2.1 Amp power supply. Not sure if Pan Cam would work on that kind of extreme length.

Would be great , but I have no outside outlets. I could run an extension cord from the inside but if I’m doing that I run it to the corner and mount the pancam 3 on the corner. I have alot of options

Same deal with my backyard; there’s a floodlight pro that works OK with color night vision if the moon is out. On moonless nights, however, it’s so dark I can’t see anything and have to turn on the IR lights. The pro replaced a floodlight V1 that worked every night, so that was a surprise; the pro is noticeably darker.

I recently installed a solar light that in the summer stays on all night. The light is dim and only gets brighter if it detects motion. Doesn’t really matter; the pro’s night vision mode can pick out items even on moonless nights.

You can’t do IR through glass, that’s just a limit of physics. If you want the camera looking through glass, you need to turn off all lights (IR, status, and spotlight if you have it).
