Wild animal detection

Hello everyone. Im looking for feedback and experiences from those using their cameras around wild animals. I have a small hunting property and have noticed on occasion that my wyze cam does not trigger an event for deer. My dogs seem to trigger the camera with no problem, same for bugs/flies. I have confirmed this behavior after my wife saw a deer walk past an area monitored by a cam v3 but we never received an event notification. I found the deer in playback as well so he was definitely in view and moving right to left across the camera fov.

What is everyone’s experience with wild game detection? Additionally is anyone using wyze cams as game cameras? Id really like to extend my wifi with point to point connections and setup wyze cams instead of traditional game cams. If the cameras have a hard time detecting certain wildlife and/or sensitivity needs to be too high it may not make sense.

Having wild animal detection would be a great feature as well, to allow further notification filtering if sensitivity had to be bumped up.

Thanks,
Tripp

I think it depends on the distance from the cams.? My old Battery cams WCO v1 and the V3 cams like :raccoon: (s) possums and cats. All get tagged as Pet.

As mentioned above, distance might be a factor. My Cam Pan V3 doesn’t detect anything beyond 17 feet or so, and that’s indoors with good lighting.

But my regular V3 will detect animals out to 40 feet outdoors. It will even identify coyotes and skunks and racoons as pets.

Thanks for the replies. In the latest case the deer was probably 10-15yds from the camera so distance could be a factor. I guess I expected better identification over distance. Have had good luck with vehicles at 30-50yds but patterning a vehicle is probably a lot easier than an animal

It’s ALL in the settings…

I get plenty of wildlife on my V3’s

I have picked up the occasional bobcat or raccoon but only when right next to the camera. Thanks for saying its all in the settings, do you have specific recommendations?

Ive set a detection zone to minimize impact from wind/trees and increased motion sensitivity. Will see how that goes.

My mom’s VDB V1 just alerted her of a deer walking down the sidewalk past her house, so definitely does alert to deer. I’m guessing that it’s a mix of things including distance (how many pixels the object covers), as well as how much of the deer is visible. Like, are its legs covered by the vegetation? Or part of it hidden by the trees or something. Also, lighting conditions make a huge difference. It’s hard to say in a specific use case, but know that deer do count as pet in the AI algorithm.

Probably because I have submitted all my critter/animal videos as Pet when asked by the app what was in this video. Yes even the cats.
@tripp.holden Most of the animal /critter videos from WYZE may be found in my favorite place.

Yeah, we asked about this during an AMA a while ago and the AI team did tell people to submit all animals under the Pet option.

Thanks for everyone’s input. Ill certainly tag wildlife moving forward. Also going to submit a feature request for improved species detection on the off chance they accept.

In my most recent case it was sunny, The buck emerged from some trees/shade into full sun not obstructed in any way. Full playback is gone but I did grab a picture. Hes walking right to left and walks right into the sunlight. In fact my wife spooked him and he started trotting right qs he hit the sun.

I’m jealous. I would love to live somewhere like that eventually.

The thread below has turned into a posting ground for wildlife captures.
