I have an exterior light switch set to turn on at 15 minutes prior to sunset. For example, today sunset for my location was 8:01. 15 minutes prior would be 7:46. However, the light came on at 7:41.
I know this is not a major deal, but I am curious what method or source Wyze uses to determine sunrise and sunset?
I’ve found that the sunrise/sunset time gets updated once a week, so the timing will be the same for 7 days and then adjust for the next 7 days. For me I believe the update has been sometime after my Saturday night sunset triggers run and before my Sunday night sunset triggers run. I haven’t used these triggers since April though as with the long summer light hours I haven’t needed them.
This explains why the sunset and sunrise times is so inconsistent with my other devices. This is especially annoying during the holiday lighting season. My other (non Wyze) devices get the updated sunset and sunrise times daily and turn on/off accordingly. I have noticed that this is not the case for Wyze. Seems to turn on and then off some odd time around sunset and sunrise instead. I guess, you solved my mystery as it seems to update the time only once a week instead. WTF, is up with that…when you set something for sunset and sunrise you expect it to be the updated sunset and sunrise time for everyday!!! Is Wyze just saving money not having their devices query some server for the updated sunset and sunrise times everyday and instead doing it weekly?!?!?! Very odd, not sure anyone else does this.
Agreed, it does seem silly that they are not updated daily and it drove me nuts for quite a while until I figured out what was happening. Pretty much the entire Wyze echo system talks constantly to the mother ship so I’m not sure why they couldn’t/don’t have this sunrise/sunset update happen daily.
My current schedule is updating itself between Monday sunset and Tuesday sunset. I’m assuming the update to the schedule timing is related to when you start the automation to run. So I probably started it on a Tuesday, so it’s running Tuesday through Monday, then checking in for the new sunset time some time between Monday’s execution and Tuesday’s execution. Technically it works, but it could be a lot better.
