Most likely your furnace has more terminals on the controller board, but you’d need to run a new wire from the furnace to the thermostat. I got tired of changing the batteries in my standard thermostat and ran a 6 conductor thermostat wire from my furnace to my thermostat location a few years ago.
Will the wyze thermostat continue to follow its schedule if the internet goes down? And does it require internet access to program, or can it be done locally?
Very cool looking thermostat. Honestly though, the thermostat itself does not do a whole lot more than what my $75 WiFi connected Honeywell thermostat from 2013 already does as far as the useful features that I would actually use are concerned. The smart stuff is cool but I only need something that can be adjusted remotely and programmed easily which I already have. The edge here is the extra sensors for different rooms but without a way to control the vents in those rooms via a smart vent of some sorts that does not do much of anything different from what my Acurite sensors already do which is just monitoring the temperature. However, my question is do the extra sensors just monitor or do they actually also control the thermostat?
It is a great price point indeed to reach those that still use dumb/non connected thermostats but for those that already have smart/connected thermostats I am unsure what is really all that different here that would be useful to most.
I want some clarity from @Chuan regarding power loss on this response:
“Yes the setting will return to the previous one, we have digital copies in your phone and the cloud.
It can work without the internet.”
There’s been times I’ve lost power for long periods of time and had to run off generator power. In the winter this is important since I need to heat my home. My question: If after a power loss I start running my generator which supplies power to the thermostat, but no internet connectivity - will this unit resume working as normal before the outage with its programmed temperature settings or will we have to manually adjust the temperature until internet connectivity is restored?
My concern is that there is no mention of a battery. This means that once there’s a power loss it “forgets” the programmed settings until power is restored AND an internet connection is made so it can download the time and settings to be applied. The thermostat will run without a temperature scheduler and any swings. More likely the temp will set to whatever is default out the box.
It will save the last known schedule before the internet went down.
You will need internet access to create schedules and rules/automations. The thermostat needs internet connection to be controlled remotely, and remember the temperatures for the status(home, sleep,or away). You can turn the system on/off and adjust the temperature without internet connection.
@Chuan may be able to give your more information.
@Seapup Losing Wi-Fi is different from losing Wi-Fi and Power at the same time, then running on a generator with no Wi-Fi. If I lose power and Wi-Fi during an outage which is normally the case, I want to know how this device functions when it boots back up and can’t connect to Wi-Fi. It may not be an issue in the summer or months of cooler weather, but in the winter I need it to continue to operate on generator power and call for heat.
I don’t work for Wyze so I can only speculate that the thermostat maintains the schedule and settings via capacitor. If that’s true, you should be covered under your scenario. Again, Wyze is going to have to chime in here with a definitive answer for you.
My reply was in response to @speadie…
Is the big temperature displayed the set temperature or the current room temperature? Can you set it to show the room temp instead of the set temp if that is what you prefer?
Good question. My Ecobee shows both. I’ll be looking to hear from @Chuan
In the video, it says it will work without wifi.
when the system is not running, the current temp is displayed. when the system is running, the heat/cool to temp is displayed, with the current temp in the upper left corner
Again, my question is not in regards to just Wi-Fi. Obviously as long as the thermostat has power, it will run with the current settings and scheduler. But what happens when you have a power outage and the thermostat turns back on and NO Wi-Fi? How does it know what time is, what temperature to set to, schedule to follow etc since it can’t get that info from a internet connection?
if your question is not answered today, I’ll test tonight to see how it behaves
Thanks.
It shows the current temperature
My question about the thermostat is this:
Once a schedule is set up, will it continue to work both that schedule and also manually independently of the Wyze app and servers?
What I’m getting at here is that as we know, other Wyze products like Wyze Sense, Bulbs, Plugs, notifications, etc often go down or experience delays. Sometimes we’re told this is due to Amazon server maintenance. I would not want my heat dependent on a server outside my home in sub zero weather and if it experiences down time or delays like other Wyze products occasionally do, that would be really bad.
Another way of asking is if Wyze servers go down for days or if internet goes down for a week in a big snow storm, but I still have power from a generator and local WiFi without internet, can I still operate the thermostat?
Yes, the thermostat will work without wifi. You can control it via the knob on the front just like a standard dumb thermostat. And during testing they had us check to see how the performance was after disconnecting wifi and power and it still functioned normally without wifi, and as soon as power was restored, the thermostat came back up immediately with all the same settings as before.
Its the room temp in big numbers and then the smaller temp at the top is the set temp
That’s good news…If you do have WiFi but no internet (which sometimes happens in winter storms) can you still use the app to adjust the thermostat or does it need to talk to the servers online?
