I’ve come to believe after reading numerous posts on this subject that the whole process is as convoluted as a Chinese jigsaw puzzle with several pieces missing
Hi all. I am a very illiterate technology person. I got the wyze cam for issues when I have a housesitter over for the pets.
I do not wish to have my footage stored in the cloud. The reason is: during one trip, the housesitter turned the camera facedown deliberately so I would not be able to monitor my house nor pets. It was in my recordings. For some reason, it went into the cloud and I wasn’t able to retrieve it. Numerous attempts and working w/ the wyze admins resulted in: I needed to have an authorization from the police department to retrieve footage that was videotaped INSIDE MY OWN HOUSE. Wyze would not release the footage to me, even though it was my own account.
This is why I prefer to have the events saved to my phone instead after that debacle. In the most recent email, it states:
NOTE: Starting February 15th, cloud video storage is opt-in for existing Wyze Cam models, with the exception of doorbell cams. This means that cams without Cam Plus Lite,Cam Plus, or Cam Plus Pro will start saving still snapshots to the cloud when motion/sound are detected instead of video.
Make sure to assign a plan, such as Cam Plus Lite, to all of your cameras that need cloud video storage!
Does this mean if we DO NOT want cloud storage, we don’t opt in? Reading through the thread, it sounds like we must opt in to the software in order to get person detection?
I am very confused. If someone could please let me know a) are the events still stored on my phone and b) do I need to opt in to still get notifications/detections, I would be very grateful.
Hi! No matter what you do from here you will still get notifications and detections.
As for recordings, there isn’t an option to save recordings directly to your phone due to how apps work in the background on phones. Your two options for storing videos are:
MicroSD “Continuous Recording” where you insert a microSD card in your camera and it records 24/7
Cloud video recordings where your videos get saved to the Wyze cloud and can be accessed in the app from the Events tab (and saved to your phone from there if you’d like)
If you don’t want cloud storage and don’t have a microSD card, you’ll want to pick one up for your cameras. Then you’ll have 24/7 recordings stored locally that you can pull out of the cam whenever you need it. If that’s cool with you, then do NOT opt in and we won’t save videos in the Wyze cloud - just pictures. The app will show you those still snapshots of what’s going on and you can tap the View Playback button in the app to view a video.
If you’d like to be able to view short clips of stuff going on using the Events tab in the Wyze app, then DO opt in. Note that these videos can be downloaded if you tap on the video while you’re watching it and then tap the download button (it’s a little arrow pointing down into a phone) but all videos are only stored for 14 days. If you can’t see it in the app, Wyze probably doesn’t have it.
thanks for answering my question:- I am already opted in… & I have 32GB cards in all 20 cams… at this time I CAN save any 12 sec EVENT video to my phone & I can share it to facebook/twitter/youtube/google docs… etc… in order to display on a projector in court or show to the PD. My concern is after reading the notice we all received regarding the EVENTS link was going away & would no longer record to the “cloud” the 14 day FREE cloud service that was advertised when everyone purchased all their cameras.- Most of my cameras require a ladder to get to… in other words… most of us- do not want to be climbing ladders to access our cameras just to get to the SD card daily & then switch it out with a different SD card while we spend hours viewing the events of the day via our computers- the whole reason we all bought these cameras was the simplicity of viewing what happened via the phone.- I mean- if WYZE is taking away the cloud ability to view- & we are required to view via our PC- then why not just let customers view their event videos via their PC directly rather than make em climb ladders to see the footage???
That functionality isn’t going away! It’s just going to be opt-in only, and opting in gives you our community-funded Person Detection as well.
If you use cloud video functionality and would like to keep it:
Opt into the service by clicking this link, logging in, and then selecting a contribution. $0 is accepted if you don’t want to contribute to our community fund, but we hope you will consider a contribution if you can. (note: if it takes you to a page that doesn’t ask you to select your contribution after you log in, please come back and click the link again. Small bug that we’re working on!)
Since you’re opted in already, make sure to open your Wyze app, tap the Account tab, then tap Cam Plus Lite (Legacy PD) and assign it to your cameras that don’t have Cam Plus or Cam Plus Pro.
Then you’re good to go! Only change is that you gain the option to use Person Detection.
Yes, for cloud event recordings, just as has been the case for several years. If you use an SD card for recording then the “cool down” gap does not apply.
Agreed. I’d much rather pay for 12 months in advance, than to have 12 separate credit card charges. Plus, seems ya’ll will save on CC fees.
If you are trying to avoid refunds, here’s an idea: Make the annual choice non-refundable. Maybe give a little discount. Such as “12 months for the price of 10. Non-refundable”.
I want FREE as you stated in your offer when I bought my cam v2. Why do you think I should pay now, when the reason I bought your product was for the free storage. Your cam is no better than any other on the market, however this marketing blitz, which you tried before, is way worse than any other. If it was not feasible for you to offer FREE cloud storage, then you shouldn’t have offered it to get people to initially buy Wyze products. It has to be illegal for you to stop support without payment or you would have by now. PLEASE CEASE AND DESIST THREATENING EMAILS TO SHAME ME INTO PAYING. IF YOU CAN NOT SUPPORT YOUR CAMERA, THEN GO OUT OF BUSINESS. HONOR YOUR COMMITMENT.
Hi, yes - Cam Plus Lite’s voluntary contributions allow us to fund Person Detection for non-Cam Plus users that wouldn’t normally get it. Without these voluntary contributions, we wouldn’t be able to offer it to customers without Cam Plus - it’s processed in the cloud which has monthly fees for us that we can’t pay with the single-digit margins that our cams give us to work with. We’ve always priced our devices as aggressively as possible, as long as this goes well we think this is the best way to price our services as aggressively as possible.
Hey, PJ - I recommend opting into Cam Plus Lite and selecting $0/mo if you don’t want to pitch in. Contributing is something that we hope that you consider since we’re granting you a new feature when you do so (Person Detection) but it’s completely optional.
Please make sure after you opt in that you head to Account > Cam Plus Lite to assign Cam Plus Lite to your cameras and keep 14-day cloud video storage.
“Contributing is something that we hope that you consider since we’re granting you a new feature when you do so (Person Detection) but it’s completely optional.”
That wording suggests if you do contribute you will get “person detection” otherwise you will not.
Is that why those who chose $0 are not able to enable Person Detection?
Cam Plus Lite will give Person Detection to everyone who opts in, even those choosing to pay $0. If they aren’t able to enable the person detection that would be something we need to look at, I will report it to the team.
