V2 cam bricked after firmware update

I’m simply providing you some additional info. I am not representing Wyze.

  1. This is a customer/user forum. We almost never see a Wyze rep commenting here. And the few times they post, its to inform, not to resolve problems or offer advice.
If you need technical support, you will need to separately contact Wyze, - not via the forum.
  2. If you purchased your V2 more than a year ago, (likely more than 90 days), they are not going to send you replacements. Sorry,
  3. Many of us have bricked V2’s and V3’s with a firmware upgrade. Sometimes the files get corrupted and don’t install properly. With patience and trying slightly different setups, copying of your older firmware to a 32 GB or smaller SD card, you can fix it.
  4. If you search the old posts, there’s lots of step by steps with comments, what not to do, to get the files properly setup on a SD card and try again.
I too have been frustrated that my firmware reload did not take. It usually I rolled to fast through the instructions, and needed to carefully read and follow the help.
    Best of luck to you.

Customers shouldn’t have to reinvent the wheel to fix a companies glitches. I had contact with someone at Wyze and they offered me like $15 discount on a new camera.
However if that’s their solution, it will happen in the future and I for one am not wanting to prolong the headache.

John

Well, that was generous of them to offer that kind of discount.
I don’t know what you mean by customers reinventing the wheel. Tell me, ever owned a computer? a car? a house? a lawnmower? Has everything you owned before a camera been perfect and you never had to tweak it, repair it, update it? My my, you are very lucky, if so. But frankly I don’t believe you.
If a Wyze camera was $4,000 each versus $40, I might expect it to self-heal. But not a piece of tech that cost about as much as a bucket of KFC.

Well that’s good for them that you are so adept at figuring out there glitches. If I was buying a kit I’d expect to have to assemble and program, but for a company to put out a ‘ready to go product it should be ready to go. As well when a company forces you to do update which then bricks their product and then not to fix it well that’s [Mod Edit] customer experience.

You don’t have to pay the monthly fee! I have doorbell, floodlights, pan cam, cam v2 and camv3…NONE of which are on a plan. Only need the plan if you want fancy updates…

Until your camera asks for update and then BRICKS itself.

Nah, I’ve had the cameras for over a year, had numerous updates come down. No issue. I’m about to start playing with various NVR’s that work with Wyze…and have their own firmware…which elminates the problem entirely…

All firmware updates are available to their associated devices regardless of if you have a subscription service or not on those devices. Subscriptions allow you more available features, but firmware and app updates are available to all.

Well if you did some reading on here I believe we are all bricked. So glad it hasn’t bricked on you yet, yet it’s coming.

I didn’t have a plan, but upon starting up my camera again…it bricked itself. And Wyze has been basically Unhelpful.

How do you update the cameras? Bulk “update all” or individually?

I only had 1, so ???

So individually then. Did you start the update process from the firmware page under account in the app? Or were you on the individual cameras device info page and started the firmware from there? Did you ever try the manual firmware flash process to bring the camera back?

From the individual camera device info page and started the firmware from there.

Yep and didn’t work

I’ve got two V2 with this same exact behavior. ugh

Thanks for the tips. I also got a V2 camera bricked after a firmware update and tried to revive it by manually flashing several firmware versions, starting from v 4.9.5.115, since Wyze had deleted previous firmware versions from its website. None of them did the trick except when I tried beta firmware version v 4.28.4.41, which I had previously downloaded for other camera to have RTSP. Even though that beta firmware brought the camera back to life, it is an old FW and it has issues with recording and playing video clips from the microSD card. Moreover, it freezes randonmly when the microSD card is inserted; that does not happen when no microSD card is inserted.

I also tried to manually update to FW v 4.9.6.156 and did not work for me. It showed a solid yellow light after the process. But since it worked for you, I will give it a second chance.

If anyone has previous FW versions to v 4.9.5.115, kindly let me know where I can download them.

Thank you for the feedback.

Update: I found legacy firmware files for V2 at:

I manually flashed FW 4.9.4.28 and I could bring the camera back to life. However, when I tried to update the firmware from the Wyze app to a recent firmware version, I bricked it again.

I tried to flash FW 4.9.4.28 again but I could no longer install it. So, I flashed Fw v 4.9.4.37 and could make it work again.

If you recover the camera, don’t try to update the firmware from the app.

Good luck

I have a lone V2 that I use for a very specific purpose and it’s on firmware 4.9.9.3006 (the latest). It’s working fine. It updated via the app, too.

Are you using Android/pc or apple/Mac? I’m in the exact same situation as @BigH.I have 3 wyze v2 cams I purchased off Amazon about a year ago. I got it connected to Android app and it recommended to upgrade. I did. I left it on for maybe 20 minutes and did some cleaning. Then came back and it still was solid yellow. Unfortunately I unplugged it to try and reset it but it seems to have bricked it. Tried every step. All 3 versions of the available manual firmware update. Just keeps making clicking noises. Can’t reset it manually either. Cheap Chinese junk I guess.
