A few rescues that I care for now. Keep your eye on the little one entering at the bottom of the frame
Needs more practice.
That’s hilarious! I like how the two on the bed are just hanging out and then, “A’ight…let’s see what the kid brought in….”
Yeah! You got it right too, those two are actually pretty senior kitties. Spending their golden years in a safe haven now.
They look super chill, and it appears that one was starting to groom the other after the kid came in. My cat and his step-brother do this.
They are super bonded, always together, grooming each other, and sleeping together. I think they are litter mates, but don’t know for sure, they act like a newlywed couple.
They were wild, took about a year to be able to approach and pet one, and then the other two followed, reluctantly. But they are loving sheltered life.
Two of my roommates are orange tabbies who are ~9 years apart in age but act as if they could be siblings:
Gingers are amazing cats! Love 'em!!!
I tend to end up with a lot of black cats, which I don’t mind, they seem to bring good luck, contrary to superstition.
These three are in a dwelling by themselves. They were born feral and the property they spent their lives on was being completely torn down, paved and built on. Animal control wanted to “relocate them” which never turns out well for ferals, so I trapped them, and brought them here.
I never intended to have a ginger (or any) cat, but he’s been a good guy to have around, and I have seen him have success with catching an actual mouse after practicing his hunting skills since his younger days with toys. He’s still somewhat timid around new people, but he’s always been pretty accepting of other quadrupeds:
I include the one dead mouse I found lying beside him once, because I’m not certain that his intention was to kill it, and I didn’t see any obvious wounds or blood at the time. Possibly he wanted to just play.
Can I borrow your cats? The cats in my neighborhood are not doing their job.
Oh wow, that is a rat!
Thankfully we just have the little mice. I’m sure your local shelter would gladly supply some rodent control if you promise to take care of them haha!
Polydactyl cats are great mousers! My father had one with the usual amount of toes, but three toed dewclaws (almost like a separate foot) per leg. He was a beast, and caught all kinds of things, including rabbits that were larger than him. I know it’s nature but it’s hard not to feel bad for prey of cats…can’t be a good way to go!
I’ve found the best cats (the ones that grab your heart) are the ones you never expected.
I think my most beloved cats are the ones that “happened” or that started out rough, they just seem to really seem almost grateful for the care and bond strongly once they get used to you.
Yeah, like this guy just “happened” to show up in the engine compartment of my car one day (the veterinarian estimated his age ~8 weeks when I took him in the following week), and because of that I felt responsible for him. He’s worth it, though. He gives good hugs.
I’m glad your found the poor little guy! And yes, cat hugs are the best. I have one who actually stands on the table and hugs me, and one that…err…yes, sleeps ON me, she is my feline soul mate. Crazy, but true. She was born feral, now she’s a love bug and SUPER docile and sweet.
Usually, my neighbor’s cats do a good job patrolling my porch and yard. Neighbor’s cat loves to lay on my porch and tease my Golden Retriever who is usually inside.
This one liked to have both forepaws on my left shoulder and be held in the baby burping position when he was a kitten. As he got bigger, that transitioned to one forepaw on each shoulder, like a clingy hug. He also likes to sleep on me (has always preferred my lap), and more than once I’ve been able to witness the exact moment he falls asleep because he can no longer hold up his head. It’s a struggle not to laugh and wake him when that happens.
My cats sometimes bring mice in the house to show off to their siblings, then let them go and they escape behind furniture, etc. Rather than keeping rodents out, my cats do the opposite. More than once they also caught a snake and brought it inside too.
My orange cat once came and jumped on my bed and dropped a grasshopper on my face while I was sleeping. He thought he was giving me a present. Thankfully it was just a grasshopper.
I mean, their intentions aren’t bad…I learned that if I give them sufficient treats they think I am a good hunter and don’t need to bring me food, so I try to give them plenty of treats so they know what a good hunter I am and that I don’t need their help.
Years ago, long before I had a cat and when I was living in an apartment, I saw a grey cat wandering around outside one evening and talked to it, pet it for a while, and gave it something from the kitchen (a saucer of water or milk, I think). It seemed like it was glad to get some attention.
I never saw that cat after that evening, but the next day when I got back to my apartment from school, there was a dead bird on my doorstep. I always figured that was kind of like a thank-you gift.
Thank you Tom, but I think coyotes are why I need more cats in my neighborhood. I think rabbits are the appetizer and cats are the main course around my house.
