Will Wyze integrate Thread and Matter into any of its devices?
The short answer is that nobody knows yet. Wyze has long been saying that they aren’t going to make a final decision on matter until the matter camera libraries are finalized. Once the camera libraries are finalized for matter, then wise can analyze what it takes to implement. It is definitely not going to be possible on some of their older cameras for sure.
My guess is that they will likely not implement matter on any of their existing products. It is something that will likely be implemented on future products instead. It is possible that they will do something called a matter bridge for some of their legacy products to be able to use matter, but I wouldn’t get my hopes up too high.
It’s also possible that the matter camera, libraries and streaming abilities will not be worth it. Part of the problem is that matter is a pay-to-play system that requires ongoing membership fees, plus fees per product. And they will have to continue to pay those fees even if they stop selling that product. This means that each product will continue to lose money every year even after they no longer sell that product anymore. So, they would have to either jack up their initial prices, or subsidize those costs with some other way such as through their subscriptions and other things. They will have to run the numbers on everything to determine if it’s worth it or how much it’s worth it or what the interest is in the market for cameras that are matter compliant. So far the only thing they have told us is that they are waiting until the matter camera libraries are finalized and then they will reevaluate and decide what they’re doing about matter.
I hope that helps. We really don’t have an official answer because matter doesn’t have anything officially done yet related to cameras. And wyze does not want to start working on the other products until they know or decide whether or not it’s worth it to do on their cameras first since those are their main product.
So we’re in limbo until the matter consortium gets their act together to finish this. But the matter consortium is running slow partially due to a little bit of infighting And disagreements.
Personally, I think in the long run matter will be replaced with a better fully open source alternative that isn’t pay to play. But for now, it’s a good step in the right direction to at least have a protocol. Most of the major players have agreed on for the time being.
