I was looking out the front windows and spotted a guy walking his dog. Suddenly the dog seems to think he needs a rest and just plops down on my lawn. The walker stops and the dog just looks around. After about 20 seconds he jumps up and they continue their walk.
Three miles into a 4 mile walk on a warm day, my dogs decided to stop and stretch out in the shade on the cool grass. I had 2 options, let them cool down or carry them home.
I let them rest and that was how we got the rest of the way home: walk until the next shady spot and then rest.
I’m sure very few people have ever tried training a cat to walk on a harness, but they frequently do this kind of stop and go taking breaks thing. Even the ones that like going on walks. Eventually you just get used to it and if you wait a few seconds they’ll start up their engines again.
It can be annoying at first when you feel like you’re in a rhythm they keep throwing off. One reasonable solution is to use a leash with a long retractable cord. Then you just keep walking slowly until the cord reaches the limit and you can gently pull and they learn to recognize when it’s time to run to catch up, often before the cord runs out and without you having to stop and go a lot like they like to do.
Yes, I’ve trained at least 4 cats to go on long walks or hikes.
They can actually do pretty good with it when trained right. Of course hikers seriously LOVE seeing a cat on a hike in the mountains.
