Support Matter protocol

To eliminate any confusion about Wyze vs. Matter, check the Connectivity Standards Alliance (Matter) website. There are 26 promoters (Amazon, Apple, and Google are the big guns here), 273 participants (including Wyze), and 236 adopters (many unfamiliar names).

In fact, if you check out Matter-compliant end products, you’ll find the Wyze Lock already listed as compliant with Matter. I suspect it’s because it uses the Zigbee 3 protocol, which is part of the Matter specification.

So clearly Wyze does have a toe in the door. Matter requires IPv6 support over one or more of Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Thread; existing Wyze devices (excluding the lock) appear not to support IPv6 (they don’t respond to IP Scanner with IPv6). I’d make a wild guess that’s more than a simple firmware upgrade.

I’m most curious about whether or not WyzeCam v3 Pro’s were architected with the resources necessary to be matter compliant - when the camera standard is completed… As I mentioned in other posts, they had said (previous to release of v3 pro) that they’ve looked at all the options and they wouldn’t be able to provide compatibility with existing cams because they just didn’t have the resources anticipated to be needed - enter v3 pro. Obviously everyone’s still waiting for the camera standard and a handful of others to be completed.

Good to know about the lock… I know matter support launched on iOS, but haven’t tried integrating anything yet… going to try later today.

Bryan,

Though I could be wrong, I’d guess that Wyze would be singing from the treetops if their latest camera included MATTER support. Even IF the new camera has some advanced electronics in prep for eventual MATTER support, the backend is still not ready (software) so we wait…

I believe support for WiFi-6 is part of MATTER requirement? So, some real changes are coming especially for the BATTERY operated cameras.

In its first release, Matter supports these types of devices: Lighting / electrical, HVAC, controllers / bridges, TVs and media devices, blinds / shades, security sensors, and door locks. They are planning a bi-annual release cadence to add additional clusters … and cameras is at the top of the list. So, I figure camera support will begin to appear in products Q4 (maybe Q3) of next year.

About Wi-Fi – The Matter 1.0 spec is free to download here – all 900 pages of it:

https://csa-iot.org/developer-resource/specifications-download-request/

Section 2.3 covers network topology. Any “IPv6 bearing” network is suitable for Matter, but to simplify initial deployments (and certification) the current focus is Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Thread. Wi-Fi 6 isn’t required. And neither is IPv6:

“This protocol may operate in the absence of globally routable IPv6 infrastructure. This requirement enables operation in a network disconnected or firewalled from the global Internet. It also enables deployment in situations where the Internet Service Provider either does not support IPv6 on consumer premises or where the support proves otherwise limiting…”

Hope this helps!

No benefit for the app to work in landscape?
You’re serious?

Name a single app you use regularly at a 90* from its design.
YouTube plays landscape full screen too, but do you use the interface in portrait mode only?

The FACT is that apps should rotate. The video feed obviously rotates. How can a designer never imagine rotating the core app to rotate as well? And to ignore the request for more than 4 years.

This white paper sure does lean on WiFi 6 like it is central to Matter’s future. I feel like the 1.0 specs have ‘bridge’ routes for legacy protocols to join the party near term but this paper only talks about the WiFi 6 side of things. Enjoy the read…

So the original Wyze Lock will work with Matter?

Um…I didn’t say that, and neither did Wyze AFAIK. I don’t have a Wyze lock, so I don’t know.

I saw that Wyze launched a fairly interesting looking Mesh Router and Mesh Router Pro (2023). I have only just started looking into Matter but it would be a good time to implement a Matter Controller into the router for the Future!

Love your products. Thanks for all the hard work.

I have no interest in any new product until the lack of landscape is fixed!!!

Yeah, me too at this point. Too many others to choose between these days. Liked Wyze in the past, but since they choose to stay there Ireckon it’s time to look at moving on.

The mass exodus from Wyze will continue to grow as they continue to ignore

I was recently looking for a WiFi temperature sensor and stumbled into the Govee landscape and was intrigued by their offerings. I haven’t looked at anything future proofing, but from a sensor standpoint they had a number of interesting offerings without having to sign up for a monitoring plan.

Apple what?

As others have stated Matter does not support cameras at launch. Although they have hinted that Matter will support camera in the near future and I’m sure Wyze is already in on that conversation. However Matter does support lighting, electrical, hvac control, locks ect. Which are all products Wyze has currently. Wyze also needs to make sure that any new products have the internals to be able to work with Matter in the future. Wyze being a closed garden (ecosystem) has kept me from buying some of their products in the past. Mater should open them up to a whole new clientele and the affordable pricing model and advance features should serve them well.

Do you think Wyze will use the conversion to Matter-based products to leverage the subscription business model even further into more products?
Bob

Uhh, yes?

It looks like matter does have some legs but I don’t think Wyze will allow the cameras to be compliant.

They seem to want to lock down their hardware so they can sell us a subscription to access our data.

That’s their entire playbook. Eventually every useful “feature” of their weekly new product releases will be locked behind a paywall.

They started the company with a terrible business model, and the only way forward was to have every user paying perpetual fees to continue using the product as intended.

They’ve purposefully avoided integration with other platforms so they can continue to charge for the most basic “features” like event recording. If they integrated with other smart home platforms, you wouldn’t need to pay to accomplish simple automations.

Matter came by and they “jumped onboard” so they could visually appease the folks that have been begging for platform interoperability for many years, while backtracking away from integrations they’ve been “researching” for years (SmartThings).

We all know it’s a sham to continue to string us along. Some of us have accepted that and moved on.

I have 2 cameras and they are quite new yet but I am looking for other options for when they begin to show their age.

I have a NAS with lots of storage space available and would like to archive the video feed from my cameras but Wyze makes that an impossible task. I expect a new subscription is in the works to sell me access to my videos?

It is unfortunate as they have pretty good cameras and if they opened them up they could sell 10 times more of them in no time.
