Status of Friendly Faces

I think the main problem with this is that a face can only be captured accurately (90% confidence interval) when it comprises at least 300 pixels, which is like 6-7 feet away from a 1080p camera (it can do it a little farther away at a lower confidence). So, if we turn off person detection and a person walks by 10 feet away, we won’t get any notification at all. The way it SHOULD work is that it gives face detection priority…if it recognizes a face, then it should just report the name of the face in the notification, if it doesn’t then it alerts that a person was detected. If we turn off person detection then we will miss notifications for everyone that doesn’t walk right up to the camera within a few feet. So that’s not a viable long-term solution.

Still, it is certainly something worth trying.

Wildbill, you have some V3’s don’t you? The most recent Fix-it-Friday update indicated it should now be working for all V3 cams:

If yours aren’t working, will you try submitting a log in the Fix-it-Friday thread with the above info and we’ll make sure someone can check into it? V3’s and VDBv2 should all be working now and they will be getting through all the other camera models now.

This is accurate. Essentially we only send 1 notification. If you have person notifications turned on, the likelihood a face is detected on that person is low (usually the first motion notification “snapshot” is far away and faces are too blurry).

From that point forward, we continue to send “snapshots” to our AI algorithm to look for faces as the motion event continues and usually (not always) people walk closer to the camera and our AI picks up a face and tags it as such in the event page.

The known issue here is the notification. Essentially, we are working on a way to “update” the person notification to a “Face Detection” notification WITHOUT pinging you a second or 3rd time. This is doable, but difficult.

So turning off person notifications essentially ensures that the face detection notification is the only one you’ll get (downside = far away people will not get a notification sent to your phone).

I have a V3 just over my kitchen door. It is at a height of maybe 7 feet. I can stand right in front of it staring directly at it, maybe a foot and a half from the lens and it never detects a face, only a person. (I’m 6’3" so very close to the camera.) I can certainly submit a log, later today.

Please do. Then send me the log number.

I tried switching off person detection, but the cameras are still flagging person, but no faces. I’ve got to go out for awhile but will test when I get back.

Strange indeed. Let me know. Also let me know if you got the survey we sent out today to improve facial recognition. I hope people participate, it’ll let us know a lot.

Log 1261737. Camera is still tagging events as person when I’ve disabled that setting.

I did receive and completed the survey.

This is what I see when I open Friendly Faces in the app:

Just received an email from Wyze stating Friendly Faces is available for all CamPlus Unlimited subscribers. Did they every get it working on all the cameras? I have not had a single face recognized over several months, even though I have it enabled on multiple cameras. Useless to me.

In the past, @WyzeMatt indicated you need to turn off person detection and turn on face. I did that and seem to get facial recognition.

I know they are working on the AI process as well.

So, turning off person detection gets friendly faces. What alert do you get with friendly faces? Motion only? Not really the same thing.

Not sure off hand. I believe it would be person related and not just motion. I seem to recall, unknown person or a name. But not 100% sure

@WyzeMatt , can you let us know what you get when a person is detected and the face is not recognized?

It is now working on my V3Pro cams, but still none of the other new cams that came out after it.

As I’ve said before, it’s also working on my earlier cams (V2’s, V3’s), but that could just be because I was previously on the public beta for it back when they allowed it as a pilot program.

I get FF on my Doorbell Pro, V3 camera, and V3Pro. I believe I was getting it on my OG camera, but have changed it since as it is in my garage.

Oh yes, I have always received it on my doorbells too. Forgot to mention those. Honestly, those are the most useful devices to have it enabled since they’re one of the only cameras that someone’s face gets within 6-8 feet of for a high confidence interval detection. But I would still like to get it on my Floodlight Pros, & BCPros.

I just looked at one of my V3 cameras… person detection is off and still no friendly faces. I just find it fruitless and not worth any effort.

I think Matt was mostly saying that sometimes turning off person detection helps to get notifications about friendly faces because otherwise, the cameras usually report seeing a person first, then by the time it recognizes a face, the notification was already sent. But doing that doesn’t help at all if no faces are ever being detected in the first place. But I tried it and person detection makes no difference for any of mine that don’t get faces yet.

I haven’t gotten any facial recognition on any of my cameras so I’ve just turned it off. Not sure if it was worth running in the first place. Didn’t find a really good use for it.

Yeah, we are actively fixing this problem, but that’s exactly right. All tags for Friendly Faces in event videos will still exist, but it’s unlikely you’ll get a notification about a face because our person detection is so fast and usually “beats” Facial Recognition to the punch… so to speak.

For me, I have person notification turned off entirely with Friendly Faces toggled on. I’ve found this works well for now, but again, we will be fixing this as fast as we can.

I finally got the first and second friendly face detection on a Floodlight Pro!
I thought it was due to either the new beta app or the new firmware, but it wasn’t. I updated them all anyway to the new firmware, and now even the one that did finally do 2 face detections won’t do it anymore (I went and stood up close to all 6 of them to try to get it to do it again). Darn. I thought it was fixed.

I haven’t yet found a single other person who has reported seeing a face on any FLPro (everyone has said it doesn’t work yet), but I can now confirm I saw it twice tonight on one of them.

Still not working on any Battery Cam Pros either.

We are working on BCPs now
