SOLVED: Wyze Cam V3 uses the Internet ALOT

The Wyze Cam V3 uses more Internet than the TV system!

How do I reduce its usage?

All the camera does is continuously write video to a SD card. NOTHING ELSE!

V3’s are data pigs, the camera uploads the video for analysis if using “Smart Detection” (AI) all video is sent to Wyze servers for analysis to determine if it is a person, vehicle, pet, etc…

The V3 has no built in AI so video is sent for analysis.

If not using “Smart Detection” the camera still needs to have Internet to function correctly which uses less data than smart detection but still a lot for just being idle.

Later model cameras have built-in AI so they are a little better :joy:

Are you being charged for usage?

The main usage will be video. If you have lots of events and are using Cam Plus/Cam Lite that will upload lots of videos. Watching live stream or SD card video when not on the same wifi as the cams will also consume bandwidth.

They consume around 8 to 10 megabytes per minute of video streamed to the internet (per cam).

I have 7 active Wyze cams without cam plus and even if you total them all together they’re way below most of my other devices.

Is that image showing upload or download? It is also hard to judge since it is in percentages and not megabytes, it might be a lot of usage, it might not.

Being charged for data is not the issue. That V3 cam is consuming way too much data I think since I do not monitor anything … as I said before, all I thought the camera was doing was recording 24/7 video to the installed SD card. No notifications, no events, just record video.

The screenshot shows both download & upload. Your point about % vs MB may have merit since I was away a good part of that period being reported.

@bryonhu I will check if there is a setting for Smart Dectection that is ON.

Are your cameras assigned to a Cam Plus or Cam Plus Lite account?

If so, you might try un-assigning them and monitor data usage.

If you don’t know how much data, how do you know it is too much?

40% of 100 megabytes is nothing. 40% of 100 gigabytes is concerning.

If you are not recording events or using smart detection/cloud features, the cam needs barely any internet bandwidth at all.

Perhaps your router or wifi is blocking communication between your device and the cam (if they are not on the same wifi, or are on a guest network with isolation enabled, they will stream via the internet, loop out then back in).

This was my thought. If you use “Guest Mode” on a router or “Device Isolation” then the camera stream will always be forced to connect through the internet even if your phone is on the same network.

Oh yeah, this is key information.

However, the thing that really surprises me here is that of that 46.44% usage, it says only 0.02% of it was upload and 46.41% of it was download.

That tells me that this has nothing to do with video streaming, cloud events, etc. This camera had a firmware update during this period and none of your other devices were used much at all.

Considering the most recent V3 firmware update is 9,349KB, that seems to mean that your modem had roughly 20MB of TOTAL data from all devices used during this time period, and the camera only used 46% of that. That is nothing to be concerned about at all. 46% of 20MB is nothing, and that’s what it seems to be telling me, barring new information.

Thanks for all this info. I will monitor this cam over the next month!

I think the % of useage is misleading me to think huge amounts of data is being used, Issue SOLVED I think!
