SD Card Melting

Mahalo for your great posting, impressive photos and thoughtful modification results!
I’m sure the various internal Wyze teams will find solutions for this issue(s),
Aloha Kalikimaka!

I spoke with the QA team and we agree that these are helpful photos but we would also like to see photos of the outside of the camera with the microSD card slot, the inside of that area (since you have it open already), and anywhere else with potential heat damage.

Did the heat event occur before or after the modifications that you made?

before… ok lets do this how do i get this label …the camera is not opened… anymore and id like to send it as it sits back so they may see that i’ve done nothing to compromise the camera…

Maybe a tight at the moment but let me be clear… this is in no way a ploy/scheme/or any other deceitful way to get get any thing free from wyze, these cameras are cheap in price and big on value… and honestly id love a replacement but I understand if thy dont. Regardless … ill continue to buy and support the product…
there is an internal issue with a couple of the components and my post was just to show its a thing and not just an isolated incident.

the plug tho… thats a different issue… that i will start a support ticket… that got me good…

feel free to send me the labels to my email,…

So what’s the verdict Wyze?

What card other than the one with the Wyze logo should we buy or not buy?

What if we need a larger capacity, can we go with a larger 64GB SD Card?

And congratulations Gwendolyn on now being employed by Wyze.

As said previously, I’ll need you to contact support to make this happen since all replacements have to go through them (there’s a process). Please use this link and I’ll let them know that you’re going to be reaching out:

Wyze Customer Support

We’ll be sending you power supplies with the camera so we can take care of both replacements and the returns at once.

@CheckSixPilot, the common denominator we have found so far when bringing back these devices is a damaged microSD card separate from the heat event. Here are our suggestions for reducing the possibility this occurring:

  • Use up to 32GB microSD cards, but not larger
  • Be careful to not bend or twist your microSD card when removing it from its packaging
  • Don’t use hard tools or implements to pinch or push your microSD card
  • Don’t use excessive force when inserting your microSD card and make sure it’s facing the correct direction

We don’t have recommendations for third party products but you’ll probably want to make sure it’s a reputable brand with high ratings. Community members may have further advice for you about what kind of card to use.

Also, I’m wondering if I missed a recent post about my employment or something. I’m actually one of the original Wyze employees and was with the company before Wyze Cam launched in 2017.

I recently bought a wyze cam do sd cards still burn up will leaving them inside the cam for a while

This was a very very rare occurrence. Very possible that it resulted from faulty SD cards. Buy only high quality name brand cards from known sources and you should be fine.

I wouldn’t call this a rare occurrence at all. I have given up with Wyze cams because I had 2 detroyed from high quality SD cards and then I bought two new cameras and bought the Wyze SD cards and those were also destroyed. It isn’t worth the hassle anymore and with companies like Anker getting into the business. We now have options without breaking the bank. That’s the joys of competition. If you can’t make a quality product someone else will come along and take care of the consumer “need”.

You really should NOT be telling people things like this. Your NOT at all talking with reality and truthfulness . Your basically saying hay the plane engine might fail but only Good quality Airliners we should fly… Look at Boeing
REALLY… ??? Shame.

So after 12 months, 289 posts, what have Wyze found in their Failure Analysis?

AnyReport?
What should users do to prevent it?
If Wyze cam is over 1 yr and melted. will it be still warranty by Wyze?

Hello Benny how do they get destroyed though because I just got them an I was thinking of putting some SD cards to keep the videos

I’ve had the SD card overheating problems on some other devices over the years and in those particular cases it seemed to be due to cheapo SD card holders installed on the PC boards. What would happen it the metal cover on the SD card socket would come slightly loose which caused enough play in the card to create a cross pin short on the card contacts/pin contacts. Any play in the card once inserted sometimes caused other problems beside overheating such as failure to record likely from bad pin contact or misalignment. I’ve used dozens of trail cameras over the years and these types of problems were most common in the most cheaply built ones with the cheapest components.

I don’t know if loose/poorly aligned SD card sockets are the problem with the Wyze cameras and haven’t had any issue with the two out of my five Wyze cameras that I use SD cards in. However, the symptoms do match what I’ve had in the past as described above.

Here’s a link to the analysis from a while back:

This is really rare but happens occasionally. We’ve noticed a pattern with the samples we’ve brought back of the microSD cards being damaged in ways not due to heat but consistent with bending, twisting, or crushing the cards on accident.

We recommend using microSD cards not larger than 32GB (the largest size we support), not using hard tools or implements to pinch or push microSD cards, and avoid using excessive force when inserting the cards.

We take this very seriously and will return and replace Wyze Cams that have run into this problem. They’re made out of flame retardant materials so there should not be a fire risk but this is still really scary to run into and highly important to us. We take back affected Wyze Cams and microSD cards each time so that we can look into what happened in case there’s something funky going on with our products.

@benny, I’m very sorry that happened.

I would think twice before saying this openly, if something ever happens, you just paid out big time in a lawsuit… I’m sure you lawyers or legal dept will confirm what I am saying…

We already gave the stats of seeing it in less than 0.00001% of Wyze Cams earlier in the thread. Wyze would rather acknowledge that this is something that has occurred (and hopefully never will again) instead of sweeping it under the rug. It’s important to us to take care of our community.

I saw that happen when care was not taken getting it out of the package. A scissors was used and nicked the card. :sunglasses: ruined the camera also (another brand)

I want to be able to utilize the micro SD recording. But at this rate I am super scared to even try to use it. I need the camera a lot so how do I avoid this. I definitely don’t want to have to deal with a replacement!

If the failure rate is truly 0.00001%, that’s way above the industry standard and no alternative will ease your fear. Good manufactures strive for 0.1%. The very best strive for a failure rate of 0.0025% (25 per million), and that rate comes at considerable cost to the consumer.

Have you tried an SD card
?

I have 16 v2 cams all running SD cards. :+1: I also have “other” non-Wyze cams, 2 of which melted down.
