Red light for Camera came on when not being Viewed

The status light turns colors when it is being accessed by the app such as live streaming and when it is actively detecting motion. It was probably detecting your movement.

The OP stated no detection settings enabled and no sd card for recording, using for live view only. I am doing the same thing and no one has access to the camera but me. So does it still detect motion even when you do not have that setting on? And does it just detect motion some of the times? It’s in the living room and doesn’t come on only when there is new type of movement, so it doesn’t make enough sense to me to be motion detection.

It could also be the camera restarting and going through its start up process. Here is a related support article.

If you are concerned about this then I would send an email to security@wyze.com and explain the situation. Be prepared to send them an APP log or whatever they request and they should be able to explain And rule out any malicious use.

I just found this thread after panicking when i saw my camera light turn red and no legitimate user was watching it live. I since disabled camera sharing and enabled 2FA.
I was not aware the light could turn red when motion is detected.

It seems like a very strange design decision to have the same signal indicate these completely different events.
My car’s flat tire warning light does not also double as a “Donut break time” reminder light.

Also, if you’re in a position to see the light, you’re also very likely to be triggering it due to your movement. So, what’s the point? It’s not giving the user any useful information.

It happens to me daily, not sure why

If you think of the red light not as “camera is being viewed” but instead as “Camera is uploading video to something”, it makes sense. May not be logical, but it makes sense. The something could be someone watching or the camera is uploading to the Wyze servers.

It should happen every time it activates on motion when you move in front of it. It is telling you that it is recording a motion event.

I think this underrated comment explains a lot of confusion over the years. Good stuff.

Why is this answered the same way every time? The thing is, we are saying no one is viewing, we do not have it to record motion, no one else can log in. The camera in this situation is solely for live viewing when I log on to view. There is simply absolutely no reason it should happen. No one is answering the question of our specific situation. It seems we understand basic functions of the cameras LOL. So does Wyze upload to itself for any reason, all the time? I need to know if there are nekked videos of me in my house on someone’s server?!

Do you have motion detection enabled?

This is the OP and I understand your frustration. I actually stopped using the camera for awhile after my post here. I bought another wyze camera, but a standalone kind…not the pan scan one.

I use my cameras mostly now when I’m going on a trip and don’t leave them on constantly except for my camera in the living room.

The one in my bedroom, I keep off unless I’m going on a trip or something because of what happened.

For those that find themselves upon this thread, the camera light will display as red when someone is live viewing the camera and/or if you have motion detection enabled on your camera and it’s recording that motion. It will also display red when the camera is going thru a reboot.

In my case, the camera was showing red despite no one live viewing (that had permission to) and I did not have motion detection enabled.

Since I saw that the light was red already by the time I entered my bedroom, I can not say for sure if the camera had gone thru a reboot cycle. I just know the light was red for quite a few seconds before going off.

And I do know that red light was not because of live viewing from someone I know or from motion detection.

Who knows what really happened that day, but I haven’t experienced it again that I know of

I’m late to the discussion but this just became an issue for us after the firmware update. yesterday, July 14, 2023. We have Cam v3, firmware version 4.36.11.4679., for over a year. We only use for live stream to check on mom. Motion detection is turned off. Prior to the update, the red light only cam on when there was someone checking on mom in live stream. Now, after the update, the red indicator light flashes when there is motion, then goes back to blue color. This feature is annoying, since my mom thinks someone is watching her when it really is only detecting her motion. Previous discussion was that the red light will flash if there is data being sent or recorded…but we are not recording, we have motion off and only use for live stream. Is there a way to go back to having the red light only come on when someone is watching? The motion thing is distracting and confusing to my mom.

Welcome to the forums!

This is normal operation. The red light doesn’t flash, it stays constant, then when motion is not detected anymore, the status light turns blue.

The bold comment is key. When “detects motion” is disabled, it doesn’t detect motion, so no red light when there is motion.

Double check your settings that “detects motion” is disabled. If your saying it is detecting motion, either yu enabled this setting or it reverted during the update. Sometimes when there are updates, some settings may revert or change from where you had them before the update.

If the status light is a problem, couldn’t you just disable it completely in the advanced settings?

The gradual latest firmware release hasn’t made it to me so I am one production version behind current right now. But when my detect motion is disabled, my status light stays blue.on my v3s.

Thank you. Yes, I double and triple checked my settings and ‘detects motion’ is disabled, however, the red light still comes on with motion.
Yes, I could just disable it completely in advanced settings, but that defeats the purpose of being able to know when someone is watching. In our case, my mom would like to know when people are watching so she can keep her private conversations, etc. private.
It’s just an odd thing that just started to happen recently and thought there would be an answer for us.

There is a setting in Advanced Settings of each camera the toggle Record Sounds off if you want.

I found a solution. If you got cam plus, go to detection setting and make everything low. Then go to detection zone and pick one square where there’s never any movement.

My light is now always blue, except when someone is watching

This happens to me all the time. Last night when it happened, I looked over noticing it was red. I flipped off the camera, and it immediately shut off. I’m about done with wyze because this has happened to me multiple cameras too.

Was there motion in front of the cam at the time? Which cam? What firmware version?

Ok so this just happened to me twice in the past week, just today was one of the two. Each time it happened I had the camera turned off in the app. Now we do have ours on to detect motion and to live watch but I had the camera turned off. Each time it happened I checked with my husband if he had turned it on and I’d check the app to see if it was on each time he wasn’t and it was still turned off. So I unplugged the camera each time.
I do not like the idea of someone possibly watching our camera. Especially when the one we’ve used as a baby monitor. We have 3 on the house and it’s the oldest one we have that has done this that I’ve noticed so far.

I have complained about the same thing apparently Wyze isn’t listening to the people who pay or buy their services.
