I never had this particular professor, but my sister and I attended the same college for a few years and she had at least one of his classes: He wasn’t teaching English classes (he was in the social sciences division), but he would lower students’ grades for writing mistakes (spelling, grammar, punctuation) on papers even if the content (thought, idea) was otherwise correct. Students would commonly have papers returned to them with correction marks (and concomitant deductions) when receiving their grades. I imagine a lot of students didn’t think that was fair, but I believe my sister and many others who took his classes appreciated it, because they realized that he cared and made the effort, wanting them to be better writers.
My brain has problems with that, too, but I wish we’d make the change here anyway. I’ve worked in some settings where they already have, and trying to switch my brain between ℉ and ℃ is a chore.
