Palm lock - disappointed to say the least

so i just replaced my original Wyze door lock with the Palm Lock. in the last 2 months i’ve had it, ive experienced more problems than the 6 years I had my original wyze lock. Its a good thing the palm lock has a key, or I would have been locked out of my house twice so far. (i wonder if the key was added because the lock fails so often)

  1. The palm reader fails.. alot.
  2. The battery drain is ridiculous. I do not have a glass storm door in front of the lock.
  3. The bolt slide does not seem to have the power as the original wyze lock, and fails to fully open or close leaving the door in a locked state only the key will fix.
  4. the keypad often take several touches to wake up.
  5. the temporary battery does not seem to have enough power to last the time it takes to charge the full battery.

I was really excited for this lock, now I wish I had never installed it. What are my options here. My hope is that firmware updates will address some of these issues. But the under powered motor I dont think it can fix.

I have been able to re-calibrate the device and that will help with the bolt not fully opening or closing, but it quickly deteriorates and I have to do it again.

I loved my original wyze lock. I had exactly Zero issues in 6 years with it. I’m still using Wyze cams I bought 7 years ago. the newer wyze products do not live up to the standards of the first products released. at all.

Can you provide the following:

  1. app version you are using
  2. the Palm Lock Firmware
  3. Is it behind a storm door

Then can get a Device Log and post it here? You can get the Log by going to the Palm Lock, click on settings, then scroll down to Wyze Support and submit a log. Post the number here, I will see if I can get some eyes on this for you.

I also heard that they will be releasing updated Firmware soon as well.

Asking for this because of:

  • I have not had any Palm reading fail. It works like a champ for me.
  • My Battery has not been charged for months and it is at 67% now
  • I have found that if you over tighten the lock the bolt action seems to get stuck it binds some. I ended up loosening and then tightening the bolts in a star pattern not tighten one at a time
  • the keypad will wake up with 2 taps in the middle of the screen.
  • Temp Battery is supposed to last 24 hours or more, I cannot confirm the duration as I have some replacement batteries from other Wyze Products. So I always have fully charged replacement batteries.

This is why a log is needed.

thanks in advance.

I wonder if the motor issue has anything to do with bolt latch friction in the door jamb. When I first installed Palm Lock, I didn’t do anything special to the jamb side, and to me the Palm Lock sounded and felt (when I would manually turn the internal knob to lock) like it was meeting some resistance, I think because it was rubbing against the strike plate. Also, the lock that it replaced has a bolt latch with a slight taper to it, whereas the one on Palm Lock seems more perpendicular to the door’s edge (if that makes sense), and I think the taper of the older bolt latch made it easier to “find” its way into the hole. After I took the time to remove the old strike plate, mortise the jamb, and install Palm Lock’s dust box and strike, the motion of the lock has been much smoother, and that resistance I was feeling is gone. The motor doesn’t sound like it’s struggling anymore.

app version is 3.7.6 (2)
Firmware Version 1.1.6
its is not behind a screen door (mentioned in my post)

Still having issues with the palm unlock feature. some days it works like a charm, a few minutes a go when walked in, i had to try my palm 3 times to finally get it to recognize. Battery life seems to have settled down. I’m not sure if there was an update between my original post and this one. Lock still struggles to close the bolt sometimes. (my bolt closes super easy, previously had the original wyze lock on it for years without issue).
Biggest problem now is palm recognition. I wish i had never set it up, because now I like the ease of it when it works. Should have just stuck with the keypad.

it doesn’t bind at all, I previously had the original wyze lock so it was already nearly all set in that regard. the lock turns really easy and I never had issues with the previous lock. it almost seems like it doesn’t fully turn the lock. just leaving it a tiny bit to bind. I can calibrate it and the issue will go away for awhile then return.

I appreciate the update. Thanks for that. If the knob turns easily and you’re not feeling like you’re meeting resistance/friction when trying that, then I wonder if you got a defective device that should be replaced. What did Support say when you contacted them?

I am experiencing the same. My wife stood at the door for 4 minutes in the cold trying to open it. Would not open with her palm or the keypad. Finally worked with the physical key. Frustrating to say the least.

For one thing, this is why I like the physical key option as a backup, but that experience is still frustrating to read. What firmware version is installed on the Palm Lock? When you set up the palm scan and access code methods in the app, did everything work as expected with testing immediately afterward?

Welcome to the Forum, @todd23!

Thanks!

I have the latest firmware and yes everything worked perfectly after the install.

I’ll probably remove it soon if this continues. I had to convince the wife to purchase it and now she is not happy.

I appreciate the additional information. Please be aware that “latest firmware” isn’t always the most descriptive. For future reference, it’s helpful to mention the specific version that a problematic device is using.

What did Support say when you contacted them? If this is happening repeatedly, then I’d be inclined to submit a log (especially after reproducing the issue) and then open a ticket that includes the Log ID you generate (please be aware that tickets and logs are two separate animals) so that hopefully the engineers could look into this.

I know that Palm Lock’s Product Manager has reported that they’re working on a new firmware version to address battery drain in certain settings, and I haven’t seen anything specific about palm scanning or keypad improvements, but I’d definitely want to let the engineers know if this is an ongoing issue for you and your wife.

I’m also curious: Which Battery Management setting are you using? Have you tried others? When even the keypad access code didn’t work, what was happening then? Did the keypad light up when it was tapped? What was the battery level when your wife had to resort to using the physical key? The answers to those kinds of questions (and especially the log) are things I would expect to be helpful to the engineers.

I’m having issues with the palm lock as well. We’ve only had it installed less than a week and already it does NOT “auto lock”. It worked great from the start and now it doesn’t lock. I’ve tried Restarting it and it worked once. And the palm recognition isn’t great either. Also, I cannot get this device to work with my ipad, We have cameras and I can get all the functions to work with the ipad but NOT this lock. Very disappointed
