Outdoor/Weatherproof Wyze Cam

How do you power your exterior cameras?

Off a battery back w/ USB.

I’ve already been down the battery route with Arlos. Great cameras, but I got tired of changing out the batteries every couple of months.

My brother tells me that when someone rings his doorbell, he would like to play a sound clip of someone saying “Release the hounds!”

I like the sound of a ferocious dog. We had an adorable Corgi that would set up a great din of barking when the UPS delivered. Then roll over for a belly rub.

Synology NAS Support would be awesome!

What’s the latest on the availability of an outdoor cam?

I’m looking as installing 5 or 6 cameras outside and I’m wondering if I should just use the current Wyse cam in an outdoor enclosure or if these are close enough to wait.

It could be a while yet. Someone else ask about it also.
From my last post on the outdoor cam.

According to the Wyze CEO email, hopefully, it is still coming possibly before the end of the year. Maybe just in time for Christmas :grinning:

Everyone wants to get their hands on one of these for sure. 2019-2020??

Now, it looks like the last thing I owe you from that 2018 email is an outdoor camera. If all goes according to plan, you’ll hear from me again later this year.

Me!!!

I think it is time for you to create an outside camera. I love my WYZE camera, I want to be able to tell my friends with houses to buy your camera from you for the outside of the their house. Get on it!!!

The outdoor cam will be a wonderful addition to the Wyze family! I hope it gets released soon😎

As per last email from Wyze CEO, it is coming before end of this year, So expecting an announcement by holiday season and delivery by next year 1st Quarter. The best idle time to get this installed in early spring in Texas.

I feel the outdoor camera will disrupt the outdoor camera market if Wyze keeps the price low which they have been doing for all products.
They will just kill Blink, Arlo etc. You might never Amazon might even be considering buying Wyze at some stage soon.

Arlo’s are battery powered and last months on battery. They’ll likely be alright, but I can see it cutting into other wired outdoor cam sales though!

Do want an outdoor camera, do not want it to be battery-powered. I’m fine with wiring it into a USB to power, or into the house somehow. It’s fine for it to be network wireless, but I don’t want the hassle of having to charge a battery.

The outdoor cam can be dual powered USB or battery.

POE power makes tons more sense than USB power.

It would, but it’s said that it would be USB.

Have a 25 ft USB cable from Wyze Cam (looking down driveway). The USB cable goes through the garage wall to a receptacle in the garage. Camera is in “birdhouse’ enclosure”. Works very well in Michigan weather.

Where did you see that? I don’t recall seeing anywhere that they’ve said any specs or features are definite.

If they make an outdoor camera USB only, I will not be buying it and I suspect not many others would either. Unless it comes with like a 60 ft USB cable or something like that.

The problem with USB is that if I’m putting cameras outside under my eaves, the most logical place for the USB power supplies are in my attic.

However, I just don’t feel comfortable putting cheap USB supplies in an attic that might reach 150 - 160 degrees F, especially considering they will be unmonitored and unobserved. There is a fire hazard to consider there.

The alternative is to put USB supplies in the house and run cables up the wall and through the ceiling. Very unappealing aesthetically.

Certainly this discussion must be academic. Surely the hardware development is at an advanced stage and the feature set is what it is.

If the power is indeed USB, I’ll probably run POE cables and hang POE to USB power converters at the ends. It just seems silly to have to do that and you’re looking at about $7 per end added cost, which is not an insignificant fraction of a Wyse Cam cost.
