OG Cam - Recording sound with app not running

Hello! Just go the CAM OG and use on android phone. For some reason the cam wont keep the microphone on during recording. UNTIL I open the app and enable the microphone. Then it records sound. But as soon as I close the app, it won’t record sound. The only settings for microphone permission for the app is “when app is in use” or “ask everytime” or “dont allow”. Any help would be appreciated!

Sound recording to SD card (or cloud) should not have anything to do with settings on your phone. Make sure the option in the app to record sound is enabled.

Welcome to the Forum, @mohr.ca082!

Are you maybe conflating recording and enabling the microphone with playback and enabling your phone’s speaker? In my experience, the speaker is disabled by default during playback, so if you want to hear sound from your Cam’s live stream or recordings, then it’s necessary to first tap the on-screen speaker icon to enable that. If you’re experiencing something else, then adding more detail might be helpful. As @dave27 said, you’ll also want to ensure that sound recording is enabled for that Cam, and you’d do that from Cam OG’s  Settings ➜ Advanced Settings ➜ Record Sound .

Within the context of the Wyze app’s use, I believe the microphone permissions that you mentioned seeing on your phone are really useful only if you’re trying to use two-way audio with your Cam in order to have your voice transmitted through the Cam’s speaker.

Yes, all settings are recording sound. I am not talking about the playback at all. The actual recording does not record sound, until I open the app and click the microphone button to enable. I have sound event recording enabled, continuous recording enabled. I tested it out when the train went by, it did not record the sound of the train until I opened the app and enabled the microphone. As soon as I move away from the “live” view of the camera, without even closing the app, the microphone is disable. I have to enable it every time in the “live” view.

The microphone button is for when you want to talk from your phone to the speaker on the camera. If you’re leaving that on, it could be interfering with the sound recording.

The speaker button lets you listen to what the cam is hearing when viewing the live view.

When viewing recorded video, you have to tap the speaker button to hear the sound on the recording.

Edit to clarify

Ignore the microphone button.

When viewing a recorded video, tap the image, then tap the speaker icon so it turns white, you’ll hear the recorded sound.

I can’t share videos or pictures. But just did another test, recording the door as I am opening and closing it. No sound recorded. Not even a motion detection came on. I have removed the camera twice from the app, restarted phone, did factory reset on camera. Nothing. All options are on for motion detecion and sound detection. Think I will just send this POS back to Amazon. yikes.

The only time it records the sound, and gives me a sound detection notification is when the app is open and the microphone button is enabled.

The microphone button will just cause some feedback/noise near the camera so could potentially cause it to trigger a sound alert, but that’s totally unrelated to what you’re asking about.

Sound recording is not related to that button at all, and is also not related to sound detections/events (those are controlled by a different setting and sensitivity).

Are you enabling the speaker icon when listening to the recorded video? Make sure you’ve got the volume up as it can be pretty quiet. Once you can confirm that recording of sounds is in fact working, then you can mess with enabling sound detections and changing the sensitivity.

Keep in mind the mic on these cams is very directional. Since the speaker is internal to the cam, turning on the microphone and making the speaker play noise will be “loud” to the cam, whereas something below or next to it will not.

Yes. Everything is enabled. Volume all the way up. Sensitivity set to 100. The camera is pointed directly at my door. It did not record the motion nor the sound of opening and closing that the door made.

Now you’re saying it is not recording motion? That’s a totally different issue.

Are you using cam plus or SD card?

If cam plus, are you using “smart” detections?

If SD card are you using continuous recording?

Just go to the cam live view, tap the speaker icon (not the microphone) and see if you can hear things, that will at least confirm the mic is working.

I’m also curious about how @mohr.ca082 has determined that the Cam isn’t recording sound or motion, because I don’t think that has been established clearly, and what’s been described so far seems more like a misunderstanding than a Cam OG problem.

Just to confirm that it’s doing what I expect it to do, I plugged in a spare Cam OG and made sure that Record Sound was enabled as I described above (which I believe is the default setting). Other potentially relevant settings (none of which I changed from when I’d had this camera online before):

  • Motion Detection Sensitivity: 60
  • Detection Zone: Off
  • Motion Tagging: On
  • Sound Detection Sensitivity: 80
  • Record Events Triggered By: both Motion and Sound enabled
  • I’m using Smart Detection Events for Person and Pet because this Cam is on a Cam Unlimited subscription
  • Record to MicroSD Card: On, Continuous

I closed the Wyze app and pointed the Cam OG at a speaker while I listed to some music and did other things. When I later checked playback via the microSD recording timeline, it was necessary for me to tap the on-screen speaker icon in order to hear the sound that had been recorded. Sound was off initially during playback, so the speaker icon looked like an outline version of that I had to tap in order to enable sound playback: . When I did that, I could hear that sound had been recorded and was playing back as expected. I could also see a generic sound event marker on the timeline, and that looked similar to but had a teal/green background.

The only time I would need to tap to enable the microphone is if I wanted to speak through my phone’s microphone and have my voice be played from the Cam’s speaker while using two-way audio, as in a situation where I might want to talk to a pet or another person.

I think there may be a misunderstanding here about what the on-screen microphone icon in the Wyze app does: It’s for controlling the microphone on your phone, not the Cam’s microphone. That has confused others in the past, as well.
