Need your feedback before we start work on RTSP!

Still looking at RTSP October? (1st):see_no_evil_monkey::joy:

I’ll gamble a camera to test early.

I am SOOO excited for this! I plan to bring some of my cameras out of retirement to help test this.

All of mine do active duty, but I’ll take the risk, not that costly to replace.

Is there any evidence they plan on opening the sensors up as well?

By sensors, do you mean the contact and motion sensors that connect to the Wyze Sense Hub? If so, I can basically guarantee the answer is no. At least not until they do a direct Home Assistant integration (the 3rd party polling overwhelmed their server costs). I get mine into Home Assistant through Alexa (Create a Binary Helper in Home Assistant, expose it to Alexa, then link Alexa to Wyze and have an Alexa routine that turns the binary sensor on when the sensor opens/motion, and off when it closes/motion-clears.

If by sensors you mean the camera sensors/entities, then I would GUESS not. I don’t think the RTSP protocol supports anything but the video/audio stream. They would need to support ONVIF, MQTT, HTTP, or something else as well. But the survey did ask “What functionality or camera features should Wyze RTSP support beyond just basic video + audio” so it seems like they were considering more than just pure RTSP. I’m really interested to find out if we get more than just video/audio eventually and would love to hear the answer.

Yes, I meant the camera notification entities as in Home Assistant. I don’t have any Wyze door etc senors.

Person, pet, etc etc.

This other camera I am testing does it, all local, I have their app notifications turned off, but it also has a Platinum rated Home Assistant integration also.

October is on the horizon, how we lookin so far?

A little info would be helpful.

Just RTSP isn’t exciting me much if they don’t open the sensors up to Home Assistant etc. too.

Person, pet etc. Totally local. I’ll still pay the cloud Cam Unlimited fee for access if necessary so they don’t lose money and more $ for cameras with open features, etc.

I’d like to keep liking Wyze, but I have other already working & testing options. Reolink Wi-Fi models. POE available, NVR available for local storage, no fees etc.

In comparison, a Wyze V4 cost about $25± on sale anyhow, a Reolink Lumas Pro 4k, is in the $79 to $84 range.

Testing one. Great so far. Has all the above mentioned features I need. Minor quirks like most have and some don’t likes.

Wyze does have added features I don’t take for granted, glass break listening, Smoke and CO listening, gunshots, etc., etc. Reolink Lumas Pro 4k, has the three I mentioned.

Wyze should have been thinking out of the box long ago and never dropped it, instead they should have improved upon it.

Winning the game by coming from behind to catch up isn’t impossible, but it is rather difficult.

Show me the Beta so I can make some decisions. Soon. :winking_face_with_tongue::wink:

I don’t have any inside information on this, but I do have an educated guess.

October 24th is their anniversary date, and the week’s surrounding that day. They usually host a huge event that they call “Wyze Week”. They like to launch and announce a bunch of new stuff around that time. My expectation is that they are likely to launch the rtsp beta either during that week or just before it, or if it isn’t ready yet for some reason then they are likely to give a big update.

Though, I wouldn’t rule out them releasing the beta test sometime close to October 7th or 8th during the Amazon prime sales stuff if it is ready enough by then. That would help drive interest in the brand and traffic toward more purchases of their stuff. So it’s possible they could time it for The start of the second week of October.

I’m guessing it will be around October 20th though. That will be the week when they want to make a bunch of announcements and release some new products and everything like they do every year. I’d love to be wrong and for it to be launched earlier though. Then they could have some data to talk about how the beta is going and their plans moving forward. So they definitely could launch it earlier and then just talk about it during Wyze week.

I believe they made a remark in one of the Beta contacts, emails or polls about early October, especially if they didn’t have to completely disconnect the cloud and could do it later or something similar, bad and old memory. Leaving something residing on an SD perhaps?

I’m also hoping for something in early October at least in Beta. Then, perhaps I’ll know where they’re headed with it.

I don’t mind crashing a camera if I can reset it, lol if something goes south.

It could be interpreted that way. What Dave said, was:

Depending on how much work we’ll need to do to add the SD card workaround, we will be launching an official beta before the end of October for v3, v3 pro, Pan v2, and Pan v3. We will continue after that to work on v4 and then our other newer cameras. The goal is to get this fully into the Wyze app before the end of the year for the first batch of cameras, but that will depend on how beta goes!

So you could interpret it to mean that if they do the SD card work around then it would be closer to the end of October, but if they don’t do the SD card work around then maybe it could be earlier. I could see interpreting what he said that way.

I could also see it interpreted to mean other things as well. I’m trying to set my general expectations for the end of October in general, and if they launch it earlier that would be awesome because I’m really anxious for this. As soon as it launches I will be reactivating my mini PC with Frigate on it to put all of my Wyze cameras into home assistant.

I do agree that I would much prefer to have all of the other camera entities available to integrate into home assistant (AI detections, etc), but if it is solely RTSP I can work with that too.

Hey, sorry for delayed update here. We’re targeting a Wyze week launch for the beta, which would be sometime during week of October 21. Timeline is pretty tight though! Cross your fingers things go very smoothly from here on out to make that happen…if not it won’t be too far delayed.

Heh, I totally called this even without having any inside information:

I know Wyze all too well. :joy: I think that’s a great target though. Announcing efforts toward this during Wyze week are a great idea. It will make a lot of smart home people really excited.

:crossed_fingers:
:tada:

I’m really excited for this feature!!! Can’t wait to test it.

Thanks for the update.

I’m not up-to-date on this topic, but is HLS also slated to be available along with rtsp?

They haven’t mentioned anything besides either RTSP or RTSPS at this point. I wouldn’t rule out other things entirely, especially since the survey had a question that implied they were considering more than just basic video & Audio:

What functionality or camera features should Wyze RTSP support beyond just basic video + audio.

That implies more than basic RTSP which only supports audio/video. So there is a good chance they will consider other stuff since they were asking about it in the survey. However, they haven’t confirmed anything. I’m GUESSING that initially they are only doing basic RTSP. Then shortly after that I expect the Matter Camera Libraries will be released by the CSA and Wyze will have to decide how else to move forward with their cameras. But once they have RTSP in place, it seems it should be easy to add support for other things using the same foundation. For now I’ll settle for anything that will let me get my video into Home Assistant. After that we can beg for something that will support additional functionality.

Let’s see if I have better luck getting a response in this topic.

For context, I was replying to @WyzeDave’s post in another topic where an emphasis on sharing features was mentioned back in January of this year. I’m wondering if/when we’ll be able to see an update on that.

Any news on RTSP?

He said they were aiming for something on October 21st, so we should hear more next week.

Been hearing talk about RTSP for months, I’ll make my thoughts clear.

If by the end of 2025, If I don’t see a production release Wyze cam firmware that easily allows RTSP without reloading my devices with a custom firmware build, I’m going to wipe all my devices and take them down to Goodwill.

I took the survey on that page and made sure to tell them the main thing they could do to improve things is

  • make an official home assistant integration. That’s realistically the only temptation I have to use another company instead.
  • Also suggested they start doing free local edge AI detections like their competitors offer.
  • Improve the automation engine (conditional operators, more triggers/actions, multi user geo fencing, etc)
