Like some others I had no good place to mount the camera near the garage door opener, except for attaching it to the bottom of the opener which isn’t recommended. So I mounted it on the back wall of my garage which gives a great view of the garage door as well as the entire garage. The cables included weren’t ideal for this but I made do by attaching the controller module to the switch instead of the opener and connecting a 10 ft micro USB extension cable between the controller and pigtail. So everything works great except the camera doesn’t reliably detect the QR code sticker on the garage door at that distance. It would be nice if Wyze could just make it larger. I found a larger one on ebay but with shipping and tax it cost more than I paid for the controller. It would cost nearly nothing for wyze to include a larger sticker, and maybe an extension cable to make the kit more versatile.
Print out a larger QR code, problem solved.
I thought about that but didn’t want to hassle with printing on multiple pages and cutting and taping them together. I would also prefer the more durable vinyl sticker and reflective ink. It wouldn’t be hard for wyze to just enlarge it. A lot of people seem to be dealing with this.
It needs to be bigger than a standard sheet of paper? If so I think the camera is too far away.
Companies can’t account for every possible scenario. I suppose they could sell an optional larger one (they do sell optional extension cables). But there is no reason to include all that stuff and increase the cost for everyone when not everyone needs it.
If it is too far away that a standard piece of paper isn’t big enough (could laminate it if you want it to be more durable) I’d find a way to mount it closer. There are lots of mounts and poles out there for cameras and I believe the v3 uses a standard size mounting screw.
Why do you say it isn’t recommended? I’ve had one on the bottom of my opener for the last year since I got it and not a single issue with it there
I’m guessing they don’t recommend it due to the vibrations, shaking the image so it can’t read the QR code and maybe causing eventual damage to the camera. Though it seems like the logical place to have it.
I’m kind of surprised this doesn’t already exist as a Wishlist topic (or if it does then I didn’t find it in a search). Others have taken the DIY approach, which is what I think I’d do:
Regarding mounting the camera to the garage door opener, I’d also wonder if excessive vibrations would be problematic for the IR filter. One of the troubleshooting steps for difficulties getting the camera to read the QR code says this:
I imagine the guidance is there to minimize the chance of something like that happening and causing foreseeable problems.
What about making or buying an L-bracket? I made one to use on a side window sill but could also be used to mount a camera to a garage ceiling.
The instructions say it needs to be at least 3 feet away from the opener to avoid interference. And you also can’t see the whole garage if you mount it there.
My garage ceiling is 10 feet high and if I mount it there it won’t be able to see out when the door is open.
It’s just a standard size garage. Any back wall is too far away. From online comments I’ve seen it sounds like many people have the same issue. And the DIY solutions I saw online are all 16 inches or larger. It would cost just a few pennies to print a larger one. It’s just a suggestion for Wyze to make a product more versatile and easier to install. I know I could jerry rig something but that’s not the point.
Is there a wishlist for this product? If so I’ll post it there.
I don’t think so, which is why I wrote this:
How about getting 2 of these? Attach one to your ceiling and hang the 2nd one vertically down (3 or 4 feet). A v3 will stick to anything metal.
That could work. But a bigger sticker would be much cheaper, much easier to install and would allow me to position the camera to view the whole garage.
I think you pretty much have two options
Print out a bigger sticker (maybe go to staples or whatever and print it on 11x17 paper and laminate it).
Use something like this mounted to the ceiling (can probably find a much smaller one, this one looks to be for large cams)
Yep. That would work too. I ordered a bigger sticker on ebay. It’s durable vinyl and printed with metallic ink supposedly for low light. I think the best option would be for wyze to make theirs larger or at least offer a larger one. They sell a replacement sticker for 99 cents.
I printed out the QR code and spliced it together with tape, then put it on a piece of foam board. It’s been working great. As for the wiring, I put it directly into the screen terminals on the back of the wall switch. Electronically, it’s identical to the terminals on the back of the opener itself, but it’s only about two feet away from where I mounted the camera on the back wall. This lets me see a lot more of the garage, and still works for opening and shutting the door.
I’ve thought about ordering some larger prints of the QR code on vinyl or a poster and selling them at cost on eBay. It makes so much more sense to use the back wall of the garage.
