Currently (22 November 2024), I have created automations on both my wife’s and my phone for enabling / disabling motion / person detection + notifications on 2 different groups of cameras.
When one of runs their automation to, say, disable detection/notification it does not have cause same action on the others’ device. So, if we walk into the cottage together, both of us must run the automation to turn off stuff.
I cannot find an instruction on how to make one device trigger the same action on the other device. (I would call this multi-device cloud automations.)
Am I correct in my assessment that this is not possible?
I note that this feature has been requested of Wyze since not been possible since at least 2020 when I made a similar request, and then again in 2024 when I again requested it in the wishlist and it was marked “Probably not”.
If I’m correct it isn’t available, am I the only one who 1) needs this capability, and 2) finds it that it is surprising that in 2024 - after years knowing of the request - such a thing has not yet been released? (As a SW industry person, I can say my teams have built synchronized cloud services before, and there is sooooo many libraries / toolkits available to build this; it’s not rocket science.)
Are you and your wife both logged into the Wyze app using the same credentials? I’m getting the impression that you’re not, because if you were then it would be unnecessary to create copies of your automations on another device. In other words, if you were both using the Wyze app on different mobile devices but using the same Wyze account, then the Wyze server side would just think it’s the same user with two different phones, and any changes to the account made on one phone would be synchronized to the account profile on the other phone.
If one of you set up your Wyze cameras using one Wyze account and then shared the devices to another Wyze account, then that shared access user is unable to disable notifications if the primary user (device owner who is sharing the devices) has notifications enabled. This is one of the problematic issues discussed in at least one Wishlist topic, and it’s one of my biggest beefs with the lack of granular permissions control for shared access users:
That’s still the situation as I understand it, anyway. If I misinterpreted what you’re doing and/or trying to do, then please feel free to provide correction.
I set up phones with different user accounts, then shared access, because I assumed Wyze would have a more sophisticated way of managing this than it does, clearly.
I’m not thrilled with the idea of multiple users logging in into the same account, and the limitation you describe seems troublesome, too.
It sure seems like Wyze’s software developers & product owners come from the device control world, not the consumer software world.
They definitely have room for improvement when it comes to provisioning user permissions and making certain features available for shared-access users, especially if they genuinely want to be taken seriously in the security market, which is one of the things I’ve argued in that topic that I previously linked and elsewhere. They’re not alone, though. One home security player still frustrates me (and many of its customers) with their lack of a provision for app access for anything like a sub-user (as opposed to master user) account.
At least the marketplace offers other options, but I understand that it can also be difficult to just pick up and move on when you’re already invested in an ecosystem. I guess we all have to decide what we’re willing to tolerate.
I don’t really track what Apple does. Their products and the way they lock their ecosystem don’t really appeal to me. The last Apple product I used consistently was an iPhone 5 that was a necessity for my job at the time, and as a Dvorak user I was perpetually frustrated with its use. (It had some cool features, but I didn’t like trying to compose any sort of message on it at all.) Two years ago, they finally began supporting that standard on iOS…about ten years or so after I’d already been using Android on personal devices. (I tend not to be an early adopter of anything.)
I also don’t really imagine Apple competing with Wyze’s price points, and I don’t think they’d try or even care. Even though they’ve kind of let the product die, I’m thinking of the Wyze Watch models in comparison to Apple Watch. No, the Wyze Watches don’t have nearly the features or capabilities of the Apple Watches, and their interface doesn’t look as slick, but they were cost-friendly, easy to use, have unique integrations into the Wyze ecosystem (I really like being able to run Shortcut Automations from my Watch instead of pulling out and opening my phone), and provided an easy gateway into smart watch use.
I’m not sure if your question was about smart home type stuff or not, but I’m not completely brand loyal as long as what I want to do will integrate with Google Home, where I like to centralize control and automation as much as possible, but mostly that’s because that’s what I started with. I have lighting products from four different manufacturers, a few different camera brands, and a few different plug/switch brands. What I’m most interested in automating at this point is the vacuuming task, and after that probably blinds, but I’m in no great hurry for either.
I don’t know if that answers your question. It’s Monday morning, and I want more .
Please note that I’m not entirely anti-Apple: I just don’t currently use any of their products. I did make a profile picture that @habib has chosen to use, and that pleases me to no end.
