Hear me out!

I just changed my router and realized the the SSID/password “issue”. The router/modem instructions did clue me in to update the network names and password to match the old. Everything went well… other than having to contact Comcast for connection issues.
I have many more devices connected to the router including phones, nest, plugs, MyQ, etc. So, change the name/password would be a real hassle… welcome to Smart home technology.
My real issue with Wyze is I moved one v3 camera and need to connect to my extender network. And there is no way to change the network and password… unless I rerun setup(?). (And that will take a ladder)

that sux, but when u rerun setup it will at least retain all the settings

Good to see this discussion. This week I had to use my backup provider (VZW) when the lawn service cut my Comcast cable. I couldn’t figure out how to easily switch my devices. I’ll try this workaround until there’s a better fix from Wyze.

It’s not really a workaround, and there won’t be a fix. As I said, how would you expect to be able to change it once you can no longer reach the camera because you’ve changed your network?

The only viable ways I’ve seen proposed are having a backup self-owned network the camera will always revert back to (a security fun fest) and waving a QRC code in front of the lens (mostly impractical).

This is the way it’s going to be, period. If there really is a better way could someone please post it?

It is difficult. I can’t change my email address without resetting everything.

Might take away from everything I read in this is that yes there’s a way for us to cheat and keep the same devices working but there should be an option built into the app that lets us just simply change all of our devices to use a new device and password I think that’s the takeaway from this is that why should look at having the option to the app to change what network and ID password we’re using for all of our devices because as someone mentioned security can be an issue and if for whatever reason someone manages to get access to my network and I change the password there should be a single method of me updating all those devices

Bingo! We discovered that the Cam Plus service also requires that the email address that the devices were originally set up with is the same one used to purchase the service otherwise, it cannot be activated without re-building all devices and all rules with the new email address. A major PITA and a security issue for your network.

No it’s not. Sorry but you don’t seem to know what you are saying here. Once you have changed your network your app can’t reach the camera and the camera can’t reach Wyze servers. There is NO WAY for your “takeaway” to work!

Technology is not magic.

The only way this approach could work is doing it BEFORE you remove the older router from the picture.

Changed out my wifi router recently to a newer and more powerful one. I just named the new one the same and used the same password…ALL of my Wyze devices worked fine with no changes to them needed

Correct, but we shouldn’t have to do a work around.

If the camera is online with the old router, they could provide an option to trigger setup via the app. That would solve for the cases where there is a planned password change.
Another device I’ve used alternates between setup mode and trying to reconnect to the network when it loses connectivity. This however has the risk that someone could take over your device if it loses connectivity, although they should be able to restrict it to only allow setup from a phone registered to the same account.

Unfortunately, reconnecting smart devices to a new router is a sad fact of our “smart” life.

As others have pointed out, easy to change new router to the old router name and you are good to go.

I have more than 40 smart devices running in my home. Tv’s, phones, vacuums, cameras, motion detectors, crock pot, Google minis, hubs, light bulbs, switches, doorbells to name a few.

It would literally drive me crazy to reinstall every device … and my number of devices is growing daily!

Thankfully, the trick to re-use your old router’s name and password works. Probably not the “safest” alternative. But the only one I can consider at this point.

I guess this just matters to us more than others. :joy:
