Connecting Doorbell Duo with incompatible chime systems

Hello, has anyone been successful with connecting their Wyze Duo Cam Doorbell with an existing incompatible chime system, such as a Nutone Intercom system with chime module? There are several threads discussing the connection of a Duo + standalone existing chime (as well as doorbell v2 + incompatible chime system), but I have not seen any threads with regards to Duo + intercom.

Detailed below are all the steps I took to connect a Nutone IM-3303 to the Wyze Duo Doorbell. Be advised that my setup is not operating perfectly; there is a half-second “buzz” from the relay 1-3 seconds after hearing the “click” of the relay (depends on whether I set as mechanical or digital with delay in the app). Aside from the buzz, everything is working as intended. I am unsure whether the “buzz” is dangerous, so I’m keeping a close eye on things in the interim. More about this at the end of this post.

On Youtube, Chris from Northside Service Company has a playlist detailing how to connect video doorbells to Nutone intercom systems with chime modules. After reviewing online material, I concluded that I would need the following:

  • Wyze Duo Cam Doorbell & Intercom system with chime module (Nutone IM3303 with IA-29 chime module).
  • Dedicated transformer for the video doorbell (recommended 16V/30VA or 24V-40VA). Note: depending on your specific intercom, you may/may not be able to use the existing transformers built into the master station.
  • Wyze Chime Controller (from a Wyze Doorbell V2)
  • Relay (sold separately). This will allow the video doorbell to communicate with your intercom system. I purchased a pre-built relay from Chris (email: nscompany@msn.com).
  • Doorbell speaker wall box cover (purchased from kyleswitchplates.com). Bought one with pre-drilled doorbell hole to allow easier mounting of the Duo.

The following picture is how I connected the Doorbell Duo + WCC + Nutone + Relay:

With the phone app setting on “mechanical chime”, the following occurs:

  • Push doorbell button and you hear the start of Duo ding-dong sound + relay “clicks”. :white_check_mark: The “charging light” on battery pack turns off for split second, then turns back on but is dim.
  • Nutone electronic chime starts sounding :white_check_mark:
  • 3 seconds after the “relay click”, there is a half-second relay “buzz” :negative_squared_cross_mark:. This coincides with the “charging light” on the battery pack turning off.
  • Charging light turns back on :white_check_mark:
  • Nutone electronic chime concludes :white_check_mark:

Troubleshooting the buzzing noise from the relay:

  • Per Chris from Northside Service Company: Since the relay is fully controlled by the doorbell, the doorbell is the source of the “problem.” He suggested adjusting the app settings to see how the Duo activates the chime (relay in may case).
  • Changing from Mechanical to Digital Chime only lengthens/shortens the duration/timing of the relay “buzz.” Also, certain Ring Tone Lengths (mostly >3 seconds) caused additional relay buzzing noises.
  • Changing the transformer from 16V/30VA to 24V/40VA made no difference with the Mechanical setting. However, with the Digital setting (anywhere from 1-9 seconds) there was a concerning prolonged relay buzz (I disconnected the Duo to stop the buzzing).
  • Using the alternative WCC wiring per official Wyze troubleshooting (not using the white wire) resulted in the chime constantly ringing after button press with prolonged relay buzz. https://support.wyze.com/hc/en-us/articles/19994563596699-Alternate-wiring-instructions-for-Wyze-Video-Doorbell-v2
  • Deleting the WCC from the circuit resulted in the chime constantly ringing as soon as connected in circuit.

Lastly, I stumbled upon this post by Zimbrich where he was successful in connecting his Nutone 4406 with a Wyze Video Doorbell 2 (Installing Video Doorbell v2 and WCC with Incompatible Chimes).

  • I tested his setup with a wired doorbell V2 (with the OONO relay), and can attest that the instructions detailed in the post works perfectly for connecting a Doorbell V2 (only difference in my use case was using a 16V/30VA transformer + Nutone 3303).
  • However, replacing the V2 with a Duo surprisingly yields more unfavorable results (compared to Chris’ relay). With the OONO relay, Mechanical and Digital setting both cause repeated relay buzz + the chime to continuously ring after button push (only stops after disconnecting the Duo).
  • I have not tested whether using the OONO relay + 24V/40VA transformer works with the Duo, but I have low suspicion that it would change anything.

I just find it unusual that the doorbell v2 worked without issue, but replacing with a Duo results in some buzzing. I wonder if it has something to do with the Duo’s battery pack. In any case, since everything else is working fine, I will just keep an eye on things for now.

If anyone has any recommendations or was successful with connecting their Wyze Duo Cam Doorbell with an unofficially supported existing chime system, please let me know! Thank you!
