Chime controller not working properly

My mother recently purchased the V2 wired doorbell cam. She told me she had someone install the chime controller for her, but not the doorbell cam itself. So I installed that for her. Then saw the chime controller on the counter. I ended up installing that for her also. It didn’t work, so I did some research and found that the chime won’t work it it isn’t installed before the doorbell cam. Is this true? If so, is the fix as simple as disconnecting the doorbell cam and reconnecting it?

I’m an electrician but my crew does strictly rough ins, so I’m not very familiar with installing smart devices. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Welcome to the Forum, @der_5!

What’s the source of this information? I don’t believe it’s true, and it certainly has not been my experience.

I don’t think that’s the solution if everything is already connected correctly. My guess is that something in the circuit is wrong or that there’s an actual problem with the Video Doorbell v2 and/or Chime Controller.

Great! You should be able to answer some questions then! My standard disclaimer: :warning::high_voltage:  I am not an electrician.  :high_voltage::warning:

  1. If Chime Controller wasn’t actually installed when your mother thought that she had someone do that, then what was actually done?
  2. When you say that “[i]t didn’t work” after you installed Chime Controller, what—exactly—does that mean?
  3. What is the Video Doorbell v2’s behavior now?
  4. What was installed for a doorbell prior to Video Doorbell v2 and Chime Controller?
  5. Was that (whatever was in place before) working as expected?
  6. Are all of the existing parts of the system (transformer, chime) known to be functional and compatible? (If you have difficulty finding the appropriate articles in the Help Center that describe this, then feel free to let me know and I can track down specific links.)
  7. What is the transformer’s rated output?
  8. What voltage do you actually measure at the Video Doorbell v2’s wiring location?
  9. If you’re using a typical mechanical doorbell chime, then are you certain that it’s wired correctly?

I’m trying to get a better understanding of what’s going on as a starting point. I’ve done a lot of troubleshooting with my own Video Doorbell v2, and when it developed a problem actuating my home’s built-in mechanical chime after I’d had it installed for a while, I used my multimeter to check continuity/resistance and determined that the chime had been wired incorrectly before I ever moved into the house: The wire coming from the transformer was connected to the chime’s FRONT terminal, and the wire from the doorbell button was connected to TRANS. Once I was able to figure out which was which, reconnecting Chime Controller correctly solved my problem. I’m hopeful we can solve this for you and your mother with some more information and maybe some testing.

If you want to include photos of the chime and how it’s currently wired or anything else that you think might be relevant, then feel free to do that. Visuals can be helpful.

Feel free to ask any other questions!
