Can any of the Wyze doorbell cams be powered (or charged) via the current doorbell low voltage wiring?

Some furnaces will have their own transformer, sometimes they’ll share it if it meets the requirements. If those wires go to your furnace it may not be related to the doorbell. Or if you can’t see, you could test by pulling the red wire and see if the doorbell loses power and/or the furnace no longer kicks on. Most furnaces are higher, I think 20 or 24V, but that doesn’t mean they all are.

If it is doing 16v 10VA successfully, it may be enough for a single doorbell and you might just need to get the chime controller.

Thanks. I tested the wire with a multimeter and Im getting 19 volts. The wiring at the chime are connected right. So there is only one thing to add and is the chime controller and in the mean time disconnect the house chime and wire those wire together, like you mentioned. Thank you for the assistance.

Yeah, I’d temporarily nut the two red wires together just to stop the humming and unwanted doorbell actuations until you can get a Chime Controller—that is if you’re planning to get the Chime Controller so you can actually use your in-house mechanical chime; if you’re okay with not using the in-house chime, then you can just nut them together and be done with it.

If/when you receive a Chime Controller, then you’ll want to…

  1. Reconnect the red TRANS wire back to the TRANS terminal along with the Chime Controller’s red wire.
  2. Connect the red FRONT wire to the Chime Controller’s black wire with a nut.
  3. Connect the Chime Controller’s white wire to the FRONT terminal on the mechanical chime.

Basically, you’ll want it to be like the diagram in the Video Doorbell v2 Chime Controller Installation Guide.

Just to be sure that the current chime wiring is correct, you could also use your multimeter to test AC voltage across the terminals at the transformer and then test across each wire pair (one red, one white) in your chime box to see what’s a close match. That should tell you which red wire should be attached to the TRANS terminal. (That’s the thing that was previously wired wrong in my house.) Or maybe that’s what you’ve already done?

If this doesn’t solve the problems with your Duo Cam Doorbell, then I’d consider a transformer upgrade. I’ve had acceptable performance from my Video Doorbell v2 using a 16 V AC, 10 VA transformer, but since Duo Cam Doorbell is larger and has a second camera, it’s got more stuff inside, so you might find that you need more power. Also, there have been reports that the battery doesn’t seem to be adequately charging while the doorbell is connected to AC power, so that’s something else I’d probably keep an eye on.

I contacted Wyze support and for some reason I got the run around about the Chime controller and they just suggested I buy the other door bell that comes with it and completely avoided offering me
To buy just the controller, that in my case, to use the wifi chime that came with the duo. I didnt see the Chime controller as an option to buy. Is this the case? My duo is working great however the mechanical chime is not.

As I’ve noted in some related topics recently[1][2][3], Chime Controller was available only via the shop in the app; I’ve never seen it available as a separately sold accessory on Wyze’s Web site, and their failure to make this easily accessible and available is something I’ve complained about.

I understand why Wyze Support would suggest buying Video Doorbell v2—and I’ve actually seen at least one report of a Forum user buying a refurbished Video Doorbell v2 (and now it looks like those are out of stock, as well) just to get the Chime Controller—but that’s a ridiculous proposition and not the way this should be handled. Wyze seemed to bungle the launch of Duo Cam Doorbell with the lack of the Chime Controller’s availability (despite publishing a Help Center article on launch day that says Duo Cam Doorbell can be used with the Chime Controller to actuate a home’s built-in chime) and with some feature problems that have required two firmware updates since the product’s release.

I think it seems like a cool product, but I’m in no rush to give up my Video Doorbell v2 for the “upgrade”.

The word I’ve seen indicates that Chime Controller is supposed to be available for purchase as an accessory again at some point (and hopefully they’ll do it right and put it in the Web shop instead of restricting its sale to the app), but I haven’t seen a solid timeline for that. In the meantime, at least you have the Wi-Fi Chime. Depending on your ecosystem, chime sounds and/or announcements are also a possibility with some Wyze Cam models, Amazon Echo devices, and/or Google Home/Nest smart speakers or displays.

I attempted to install the wyze chime controller and my mechanical chine still not working. See my new wiring diagram. Im getting 19 volts from the transformer - labeled X- form

I wasn’t talking about connecting the chime. I was talking about the actual doorbell unit with the camera. Someone relayed that they are all pretty much able to be wired to the existing low voltage wires to provide a trickle of power to keep the battery charged.

When you say that the chime isn’t working, what does that mean? More detail about what happens with the chime when you press the doorbell button might be helpful.

If you’re positive about which pair (red and white) of wires come from the transformer and which come from the doorbell camera’s location and have confirmed that all the connections are solid, then the photo appears to show the Chime Controller wired correctly in the standard installation.

I have some ideas (some of which are likely to seem redundant), but I want to get a better idea of what the chime is doing and what you’ve attempted before proceeding.

The chime sounds once - “ding” and then the chime controller starts making a “clicking” sound for several seconds and the small metal part that goes up and down, to make the ding and dong sound moves slightly, continuos afterwards.

Could it be that for the duo, the wiring is different?

How is the app set?

I wouldn’t expect that to be the case since Wyze has indicated that Chime Controller is compatible and necessary for making Duo Cam Doorbell work with existing chimes.

I know I stated I was going to back out in the other thread post. I did not post in this one. Reading thru the thread and conversations, particularly when @matosw joined in, nowhere did I see, unless my eyes failed me, the question asked if the battery was installed in his duo. This is a must for the duo’s successful operation even wired. Even I failed in my posting in the other conversation. Something that simple in a wired configuration is often overlooked. @matosw can you confirm your installation includes the battery being in your duo?

I think that’s a reasonable question. I know that Duo Cam Doorbell requires the battery even in a wired configuration, and I have no idea how this doorbell and a connected mechanical chime would behave without the battery installed.

Won’t work. The transformer wires aren’t connected to the Duo; they only charge the battery.
