Cam Pan V4 problems

#1 problem:

Nowhere online or in-box instructions is it mentioned that the V4 pigtail cannot be removed to replace with a longer extension cord. That’s bs! Total B.S.!!!
#2 problem

The new V4 pan Cam pigtail has a USB-C connector and the Outdoor Power Adapter cord ends with a micro USB plug which feeds into two pigtail adapters. Why not use USB-C to feed the pigtails, then it would plug into the V4 Pan Cam pigtail directly. Who is in charge of making sure your products fit your accessories?

Are you trying to replace the stock USB cable that comes with the pan V4? Then get a USB-C to USB-A, but longer cable. I don’t see a problem there.

Edit.

I had the opposite need; I used a shorter cable for testing purposes.

  1. I don’t think any of the Cams’ pigtails are designed for user removal. This is not unique to Cam Pan v4.
  2. If you’re using an older Outdoor Power Adapter, then I believe that’s accurate. At the time Cam Pan v4 was introduced, I believe that the updated Universal Outdoor Power Adapter was not yet available. I received the “introducing” marketing e-mail about the new adapter only ~10 days ago, and according to its specifications it appears to terminate in a USB-C male connection (for newer Cams like Cam Pan v4 and Duo Cam Pan) with adapters for micro-USB to accommodate some older Cam models.

If you just recently ordered the Outdoor Power Adapter, then I’d suggest contacting Support for a return so that you can get the correct version for your Cam Pan v4. If you have an older version of the Outdoor Power Adapter that terminates in a micro-USB connection and it’s something you’ve had installed and been using for a while but now you’re trying to use it to power a newer camera, then you could source a third-party micro-B female to USB-C male adapter and leave your existing Outdoor Power Adapter in place, but I’d probably do something to try to secure and weatherproof the connections in that case.

As I understand it, this is exactly what the newer “Universal Outdoor Adapter” does, which is probably why the product page advises checking for compatibility.

@mark351c I suggest you read the info before hitting the check out button.

I have 1 OG cam and 3 Pan Cam V3 and every one comes without a pigtail. You must plug in the power cord. There is an open socket on every one I’ve had previous to the V4.

The Pancam V4 has a short 5” pigtail with a female USB-c in a weatherproof sleeve. You want to use the matching weatherproof plug to go into that sleeve, not something from a gas station or Walmart. So a “factory” wire is what I bought and if the camera wire end was a “C” it would have worked with the weatherproof connector on the Camera. And I swear it said it fit the V4 on one listing, somewhere, at 4AM…

I don’t know why they use the outdated micro USB on anything, really. Also the Outdoor Power Adapter comes with 2 pigtails, one of which would plug into the V4 if the pigtail was removable.

Solution… as I see it I need a USB-A union, or cord with a female USB-A end, to use their in-box 5’ cord to mate to a gas station USB-A to go to the power outlet. The “union” will lay in the attic while going to a Soffit drilled out for the Cam wire. A connection that can cause problems laying in a hard to get to place.

My understanding of Cam Pan v3 is that its L-shaped connector in the base was somewhat unusual and a pain point for many users, particularly for those wanting to use third-party USB cables that were longer than what Wyze provided with the Cam, and that’s one of the rationales they used for adding the pigtail-type connector to Cam Pan v4. Apart from using a USB-C connector instead of micro-B, that follows the pattern of several other Wyze Cam models: (non-Pan) Cam v4, (non-Pan) Cam v3, Cam OG (Standard), and Cam OG Telephoto. Those all have a pigtail extending from the back of the camera that the power cable from the adapter plugs into.

:information_source: If you purchased your Cam OG this year, then that might explain why it has no pigtail. I’ve seen on the Release Notes & Firmware page that there’s a separate entry for “Wyze Cam OG (2025 Version)”, and Cam OG’s product page is also indicating that there’s an older model and a 2025 model. I last purchased Cam OGs (including Telephoto) last year, so those are the older model, and all have the pigtail with the USB micro-B female connector.

This is where details matter, and it’s important to differentiate between (non-Pan) Cam v4, which uses a micro-B connector, and Cam Pan v4, which uses USB-C. The older Outdoor Power Adapter works with Cam v4. The newer “Universal” adapter works with Cam v4 (and includes appropriate short adapter cable for that) and Cam Pan v4 (without an adapter cable). They’re both listed on the same product page, so I imagine that can be confusing, especially at 4:00 a.m.

A lot of users complained about this when Cam v4 was released last year, so you’re not alone in thinking that. As far as Cam OG goes (even with the new model I’m seeing it list a micro USB port), I think that’s a matter of cost savings, which I believe has always been one of the primary goals with that particular camera model.

Like I said before, if you just recently got the wrong version of the Outdoor Power Adapter that doesn’t work with Cam Pan v4 and you want to use that for power outdoors, then I’d be inclined to contact Wyze Support for an exchange. If, on the other hand, your electrical connections are all going to be indoors and protected from the elements except for plugging a male USB-C connector into Cam Pan v4’s female pigtail, then I don’t think using the included indoor power adapter is a problem, and you might be able to just use a regular extension cord to get the adapter closer to your soffit hole so that you can use the original USB cable that shipped with the Cam Pan v4. That’s probably what I’d look at doing.
